The Washington and Anacostia Railway Company today began transferring passen- gers to and from the Belt line, and the lat- ter will henceforth pursue the same course, under a reciprocal arrangement. There is a charge of two cents per pasesnger in ad- dition to the regular fare. Services at Garden Memorial Church, An- acostia, were unusually interesting yester- day. In the morning the pastor, Rev. J. B. North, preached on the parable of “The ten virgins.” The meeting of the Junior Christian Endeavor Society in the after- noon was led by Mr. C. O. Bohrer, and Miss Bertha Swindell. Previous to the sermon at night, by Mr. North, a “consecration meeting was held under the auspices of the Christian Endeavor Society, Mr. Shann, chairman of the look out committee, lead- ing. : nae H. T. Stevenson, pastor of the An- acostia Baptist Church, preached yestesday morning from the subject, “The Christian’s Orders,” and at night on “The Sinner’s Call.” ‘The grading of Spring place between Ma- ple avenue and Arthur street, will, it is ex- pected, be commenced in a few days. The estimated cost is in the neighborhood of $2,000. A number of alleys between Chest- nut and High sireets, in Griswold’s subdi- vision, are also being graded. An important business meeting of the Young People’s Society of Christian En- deavor of Garden Memorial Church will be held on Wednesday night, at the residence of the president, Mr. Carlton E. Snell. ~ me corament. was occasioned on Satur- day evening in Anacostia on account of the appearance in the marriage column of The Star of an announcement that Mr. Albert C. Beers and Miss Addie M. Redd, both of Anacostia, were married more than two years and a half ago, on October 4, 1892, in Baltimore, by Rev. Peregrine Wroth, rector of the Church of the Messiah of that city. ‘The contracting parties are both well known and highly thought of by numerous friends and the community generally. No reason can be assigned by any but the par- ties themselves as to why the marriage should have been kept a secret so long. Mr. Beers has been keeping bachelor’s home for a long time, and has been paying marked attention to his wife during that period, and it was not until Thursday when Miss Redd, as she was supposed to be, told her immediate family that she intend- ed to join her husband, that the existence of the marriage was suspected in the most remote degree by any one. Mr. John H. Hitte has begun the erection of a neat frame five-room cottage on the Morris road. Mr. Harry Grimes, who was formerly connected with St. Elizabeth’s Asylum, is building a seven-room -house on Jackson street. Rev. D. L. Reid of Virginia was the guest yesterday of Rev. James McLaren. Wm. F. Powell, whose escape from St. Elizabeth's Asylum was reported to the police authorities a couple of weeks since, voluntarily returned to the institution a day or two ago. The Epworth League meeting last mght at the Anacostia M. E. Church was con- ducted by Mr. Russell Bowen. The theme was “The Burnt Offering.” As usual the attendance was very large. Rev. D. L. Reid of Virginia, a member of the Southern Methodist conference, now sitting at Mt. Vernon Place Metholist ‘hureh South, Washington, preached at rostia M. E. Church yesterday morning before a large audience. His subject was “The Reception of the Holy Ghost.” The services at night were conducted by the Woman's Home Missionary Society, the annual meeting being held. Mrs. McLaren, wife of the pastor, who 1s president, pre- sided and made her report, which was very interesting. Miss Ida Minor of the Deaconess Home, Washington, made an address and explained that the little Indian girl who lives at the home and had been announced to take part in the program was too ill to attend. Remarks were also made by Mrs. McLaren, Mrs. Gilbert of ien- Weak Women Find in the Electropoise the tonle needed to overcome functional derangements, inflammations, ulcerations and displacements. McLean, organist of the Sun- day school, sang a beautiful solo, which was one of the features of the even- ing’s exercises. Mrs. Suit, Miss Bowers, Miss Marr and Miss Butler were requested by Mrs. Roach in her address to wait cn the congregation and solicit persons to become members of the Missionary Socisty, and they did so at the close of the meeting, with gratifying results. The entertainment for the benefit of the proposed Memorial Baptist Chapel to be erected at Fort Foote, Md., in memory of Miss Campbell, which was given at the latter place on Friday night last, was more successful than had been anticipated. The committee having the erection of the new edifice in charge have been presented with an eligible lot for the building, and ground will be broken for the structure as soon as the weather will permit. It is expected that there will be eventually gathered together in the neighborhood a large Baptist congregation. About twenty persons were last night re- ceived into the membership of the Congress Heights Methodist Episcopal Church, of which Mr. Robert H. Jordan, the well- known and devoted evangelist, has charge, by Rev. James McLaren, pastor of Anacos- tia M. E. Church. The Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavor of the Congress Heights M. E. Church was Jed last night by Mr. Robert H. Jordan, superintendent of the Sunday school. The theme was “Promises.” A meeting of residents of Hillsdale, who still think that Policeman Green ought to be prosecuted for shooting Reuben E. Fos- ter, will be held tonight at Hillsdale A. M. E. Church. A committee, composed of Messrs. Henry Underdue, Allen Jackson and Henry Sayles, have, it is understood, retained the services of Messrs. E. M. Hew. lett and Thomas L. Jones, the well-known colored lawyers, to see if Officer Green can- not yet be prosecuted, and the meeting is for the purpose of raising funds with which to pay them, and to take other steps in. the matter. Addresses will be made by Rev. Dr. Ovelton, Col. Perry Carson and several others. Joseph Miller was arrested yesterday at Benning by Officer John Boland, on a warrant charging him with stealing a small amount of property from Frederick Promise. Arthur West and William Millard were arrested yesterday by Officer Anderson, on the charge of obstructing the highway in the vicinity of Douglass Hall, Hillsdale. On depositing $5 each as collateral they were released. > ROCKVILBE.
