Dees Not Believe That a Change is ‘Wanted by the Grent Majority of the Party. ai Special Correspondence of The Evening Star. BALTIMORE, Md., March 18, 1805. Senator Charles Gibson has treated the Politicians of Maryland to something of a surprise by announcing his candidacy for re-election and by a vigorous talk on state politics. His present term expires March 4, 1897, and he says he will certainly go before the legislature as a candidate to succeed himself. The Senator, after stat- ing that he would be a candidate again, do not think the democratic party in Maryland is in any danger. The ma- jority of the voters of the state are demo- crats, and at the first sign of danger to the supremacy of their party they will rally as they have often done before and will win again. Every two years for the last quarter of a century the same-outcry has been raised against the party leaders and the party management, but the result has always been the same, and there will be no change this year. If the republican party and the republican leaders were in any way better than ours there might be some reason to fear the outcome, but such is not the case. The Democratic Leaders. “I not only do not believe the party is in danger of defeat, but I do not believe a great majority of the democrats of the -state are in any way desirous to have a change in the party leadership. The men who are now at the head of party affairs have been in the forefront of all the cam- paigns for a generation; they have won their spurs by their skill and the success which has crowned -their work, and no real democrat who understands what they have done wants any change at-the pres- ent time. There may be a few people scat- tered throughout the state who would like to see a new management installed, but they are the same people to a great ex- tent who have for years been aiding the republicans, either openly or secretly, and the people who have the. true interests of the democratic organization at heart un- derstand them d know what és at the bottom of their c®%mor. “Scnator Gorman and his friends have so often led the party to victories that they must have aroused antagonisms, but the hostility manifested against them is no greater now than it has~been in certain quarters since 15; The same cries are being raised against them, the same argu- ments are being used, that have become a stock in trade with some people, and I fully expect to see the same. result. “The great majority of the democrats in the state will again sustain..the regular leaders and the regular organization at the primaries and in the conventions, and the people will elect the regular democratic ticket at the polls next November: “Any one who for a moment imagines that Senator Gorman and his friends are going to give up the fight before the lines are formed, or are going to retreat before their old foes, is depending on contingen- cies which will not happen ‘this year any . 27th and 28th sts. ne IN SUMS FROM $1,000 UPWARD, =——= = aes = 1gt* W. The vacancy in the cffice of chief of the revenue cutter service will soon be filled, It seems to be the general opinion among treasury people conversant with the s! uation that either Lieut. C. F. Shoemaker, commander of the revenue cutter Hude son, at New York harbor, or Capt. C. ly Hooper, now commander of the Rush in Bering sea, will receive the appointment. ‘The law provides that only captains fing be eligible for appointment as chief of t! revenue cutter service, but Lieut. maker was the senior lieutenant in service and the death of Capt. Shi advanced him to the higher grade.
