Harrison street between Monroe and Fillmore streets presents a much improved appearance today, as a result of the re- moval of considerable of the winter's ac- cumulation of dirt. Following the speechmaking re- freshments were served. The monthly literary of the Epworth League will not be held this evening owing to the absence of Mr. J. E. Powell, who is at present in Florida. He will return in a few weeks. A letter was received yesterday by Miss Linger from Mrs. Dr. A. M. Green, who is making a tour of Ficrida. She describes the country as charming, but says she will be glad to return to see her friends in Anacostia. x . Mr. David E. The Montgomery County Sunday School Association has decidéd to hold confer- ences in the interest of its work as fol- lows: Takoma Park, Presbyterian Church, Sunday afternoon, March 24; Potomac, M. The Citizens’ Association of Brookland will hold a meeting in the town hall this evening at 8 o'clock, to consider the sub- ject of protection in case of fire. All resi- dents of Brookland interested in the wel- fare of the town are desired to attend. ‘The Brookland W. ©. T. U. held a very earnest meeting at the residence of the president, Mrs. R. R. West. Mrs. Williams of Eckington made some instructive and well-chosen remarks. Plans were promul- gated for an all-day meeting to be held by the union scme time in May. At the next meeting, two weeks hence, delegates will be elected to the District quarterly meet- ng. "Ene members of the Brookland M. EL congregation are delighted with having the Rev. W. H. Church will not occur next Sunday, had been anticipated, the builders deeming it best to postpone the ceremony until some time in the spring. Much regret is expressed in Brookland at the sudden death of Mr. Mountjoy, a conductor on the Eckington and Soldiers’ Home railway. Mr. Mountjoy was very popular with the patrons of the road, and was in the best of health until stricken with pneumonia, from which he died after a short illness. The immediate cause of his sickness .was exposure during the severe snowstorin last month. The young people’s meeting of the M. E. Church will be held at the home of Homer Fisher, on Hartford street. By general request the members. of the T. T. Club will repeat their rendition of “The Coming Woman, or the New Spirit of 96," at the next regular meeting of the Queenstown Mite and Literary Society. Another narrow escape from 4 conflagra- tion occurred in East Brookland a few days since. During the absenze of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hospital from their home some boys ignited the dry grass on the vacant lots south of the house, and as there was a strong wind blowing the flames swept up to within a few feet of Mr. Hospital's building before they were checked by a number of other boys, who came to the rescue. So rapid was the spread of the fire that the situation for some time was very -alarming. ——.__ BRIGHTWOOD.
