There {s considerable joy among the tem- Pperance advocates of Anacostia, and there is no less soreness among the saloon ele- ment over the action of the excise board in rejecting the application of William Rose for a retail iquor license. To the last the saloon people were sanguine, and the news which flashed over wire as well as by messenger tg the town yesterday, telling of the rejection, was received with considerable comment. Rev. Hugh T. Stevenson was among the first to tell of the action of the ,board, and in half an hour thereafter nearly all Anacostia was possessed of the information. There was no end of the fight last night, however, as the word got about that Rose was going to apply for a wholesale license, and then there were little meetings, more planning, and the temperance people this morning were again on the alert to prevent any such action. The next move of the re~ formers, it is understood, will be directed against alleged speakeasies, and several al- leged gambling places, which have been said to exist in the business portion of the town. Then there has come to light the fact that the main streets have not been free of habitual drunkards, who hang around in the vicinity of saloons to get drinks. The police department will be asked to deal with these people as vag- rants, and not spare any who violate the law. Dr. George Havenner, while running after an Anacostia car at 9th street and Penn- sylvania avenue on Monday, sprained his ankle very badly. Mrs. A. B. Garden of Minnesota avenue ts very ill. ‘The channel of the Anacostia river was the scene of an active throng yesterday. Seyeral hundred skaters enjoyed the sport, and today at an early hour there were many Anacostians gliding over the ice. Postmaster Tolson, having received word from the Associated Charities that he might engage a number of workmen to clean the streets, soon collected a gang of twenty-five, and, with two carts, was at work at an carly hour removing the piles of snow which line the streets in the bus- iness portion of the town. These men will be paid from the fund at the disposal of the association. There was nothing new at the station house this morning, except the continual request for provisions, cloth- ing and fuel. Sergt. Kirby is still solicit- ing contributions, which just at present have taken a decided drop. Electa Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, attended last night the institution of Naomi Chapter, which was organized at Scottish Rite Sanctuary, in Washington. Mrs. Mahalley Anderson has taken up her residence with Mr. John Skidmore, on Minnesota avenue. Miss Carrie Golden {s ill at her home on Maple avenue. There was no meeting of John A. Logan Post, G. A. R., which was to have taken place last night at Matonic Hall. BROOKLAND. A stated communication of Takoma Lodge, U. D. F. A. A. Schoficld’s Acknowledgments. Senator Hunton of Virginia has received a letter fromy Gen. Schofield thanking him for the kind words said by him in urging the confirmation of his nomination to the grade of lieutenant general. “Many times during the past twenty-five years,” said the soldier to the Senator, “pleasant per- scnal messages have come to me from Vir- ginia, but it has remained for you to make the first official and- public declaration of the fact, which has always been so dear to me, that I had gained the friendship and confidence of the big-hearted people of Vir- ginia. This is an honor far more dear to me than any mere military rank, and I thank you very sincerely for having taken so fitting an occasion to make public Geclaration of that greater honor.” STOMACH.
