6 THE EVENING STAR, MONDAY, JANUARY 28, 1895-TWELVE PAGES. os — THE EVENING WASHIN GTON MONDAY. STAR. -Editor. ChOSBY 5s. Senator Gallinger’s resolution calling upon the District Commissioners for cer- tain specific information as to public school facilities in the District will result in directing attention in a forcible manner to conditions that are far from creditable to the Cong:ess that permits their continued existence. The Senator's present interest seems to have been aroused by a news- paper statement which had it that there are more than eight thousand schooliess children at the national capital. This an- nouncement Senator Gallinger regards as one of great importancé and “a very seri- cus reflection upon the Congress of the United States.” It is all of that, and more. The Senator says that he is “inclined to the belief that this matter has been en- tirely exaggerated in the public press, and will further suggest that it fray be found that the school facilities in this District are perhaps almost, if not wholly, adequate for the wants of the children." When the data called for is in the Seratcr’s possession, he will see at a glance that the situation is worse than he apparerfly supposed it was. Without having anything like precise fig- vres upon which t&*base its estimate, The Star thinks that the figures which Senator Gallinger regards as too large are really less than the unfortunate aggregate. The Senator will also see, when his resolution bears fruit, that a large and rapidly-in- creasing number of children receive in- struction only during one-half of each school day vecause Insufficient facilities have compelled this arrangement; this number must grow encrmously unless ad- ditional buildings are provided. Senator Gallinger says with confidence, in which the people of the District would like to share, “if it shall appear that the school facilities are inadequate I am sure that Congress will hasten to make necessary sppropriaticns to provide additional school accommodations.” May Senator Gallinger prove to be an unerring prophet! —___+ e+ — ‘The claim ts often made that striking workmen do none of the damage which is elmost invariably consequent upon a strike. Sometimes this claim is well founded, for it occasionally happens that thé rough ele- ment takes advantage of friction between capital and labor to do many things that could not be done in more peaceful umes without detection.
