Lowe; warden, H. P. Krouse; sentry, J. G. May. Later a ban- quet was served and addresses were made by the grand commander, grand treasurer, and Companions Lord, Zundt, Heiferman, May, Thomas, Lewis, Evans and Mayfield. Revival Sermon. “here Is a Friend That Sticketh Closer Than a Brother” was the text on which Rey Mr. Elsom last night based his re- viv2l sermon at the Baptist Church. Five conyersions yvesalted from the service and thirteen joined the church. “Friendship all will admit,” said the speaker, “is a good thing, but the friendship of the worid is uncertain. Christ is a true friend who never forsakes. He is a friend, not always to the exalted class, but always to those who are weary and heavily laden, weak, tempted, distressed and poor. To the sin- ner He fs also a friend. As a friend He leads us. He is our captain, our advocate, our elder brother, our all in all. He is our redecmer and our judge.” Illustrations throughout. gave the sermon additional intz2rest and effectiveness. Big Price. The little bay gelding Prince Purdy, bought by Messrs. R. A. Casilear and Far- ley Veale, recently for $140, and three weeks ago sold by Mr. Veale (to whom Mr. Casilear had transferred his interest) to a Norfolk horseman for $1,500, was on Tues- day last turned over to Robert Bonner, the New York turfman, for $10,000. Prince Purdy, under the training of horsemen, de- veloped a speed of 2.17. Big things are ex- pected of him. While never put to a severe test in Georgetown, the little animal show- ed there was splendid “stuff” in him. He has exceeded the most sanguine expecta- tions, and the knowledge of the horse's actual worth and the remembrance of what Georgetown has parted with him for have made two men here think of lost opportu- nities and possible fortunes. Notes. The dance of the “No Name" Club last night at the Potomac boat house was a delightful affair. The attendance was just large enough to be sociable and not un- comfortable. The boat house has been mede air-tight and as pleasant as a con- servatory. Faith Tent of Rechabites held an inter- esting meeting last night, at which two candidates were initiated. The Sunday afternoon temperance meetings held under the auspices of this tent have proven so successful that they will be continued at Odd Fellows’ Hall. Last night Mr. Walter T. Weaver cele- brated the fifth anniversary of his entry irto his present large business establish- ment by giving a dinner to the attaches ot his place and to a few outsiders. The affair was a big success. Music, recita- tions, speeches and songs enlivened the occasion, ——_—> —. Judge Miller Listens to Some Sad Steries and Discovers a Worker for the Post Office. The Municipal Lodging House, Central Union Mission and other places where free lcdging is given were well filled last night, and even then some of the homeless strangers had to walk the streets. Many of those who applied at the police stations and failed to properly account for them- selves were put in cells and charged with vagrancy. The tramp problem has given the police a great amount of trouble dur- ing the past few weeks. Citizens of the District have complained to the officers of the bold conduct of some of the tramps, who “hold up” pedestrians and then in- sult them when refused. Some of these strangers have even gone so far as to com- mit assaults, and the officers suspect that the tramps are responsible for some of the burglaries that have been committed. The arrest of so many tramps here this winter is making a decided increase in the city’s police record, as many es sixty of them having been arrested during one day and night. Many Prisoners. During the four days of this week there have been 217 prisoners in the Police Court cells, a great many of whom were strang- ers. There were 1orty-nine prisoners in the toils this morning, and about 50 per cent of them were strangers. In the trial of these cases the defendants tell of their trips across the country on freight trains, and seem to think a twenty-four hours” ride is no more than a 10-cent ride down the river is to mary horest toilers. When Judge Kimball's procession started this morning a strong, able-bodied man, whose name was given as John Quinlan, was called, but there was no response. “There he is,” Policeman Wannell said, pointing to one of the prisoners. “My name ain't Quinlan,” said the man. “What is it?” “John Casey.’ The name in the information was chang- ed and the man plead not guilty. “He was on Pennsylvania avenue yester- day ‘holding-up’ people,” said the officer. “At the Peace monument he stopped a number of persons, and the last one he tackled was an old colored man. The old man refused him and he followed him around the monument.” “Whet have you to say about this?” the prisoner was asked. “I'm not guilty, begging.” “What were you doing?” “Well, I was under the influence of liquor and that’s all.” “Where is your home?” “I'm from New York.” “Have you any money?” ‘0, sir.” ‘No money for food,” the judge remark- ed, “but under the influence of liquor.” ‘A sentence of thirty days was imposed. Party of Eight. Eight yourg men next appeered. They had stopped at the second precinct station last night, because they did not want to spenc the night on the streets, and Otficer Carson added their names to his Mst of cases. Four of them have been here several days, and one of them, Robert Reed, ad- mitted that he had worn out his welcome at all the free lodging houses. ‘Three of them arrived here last night on the Cincinnati freight. Their faces and hands were covered with soot and grease. “What are you doing here?” Frank Wai- ton was asked. “I'm on my way to Baltimore from the west,” was his answer. ‘Why did you go to the police station?” “Because I thought it more honorable to go there than to beg the price of lodging on the street.” The other men offered various excuses, ene of them saying he came to get @ copy of his discharge. Another one expected @ letter, while still another expected some mcney by mail. Four of them were released to leave the a and the others were given ten days excl "he answered. “I wasn’t Was Released. ~* ‘William Harrison, a printer, who belongs here, next appeared as a vagrant. “Last night,” sald Policeman McCort, “I found this man drunk and begging at 10th and D streets.” “I was drunk,” the man admitted, “but 1 dcn't remember anything about the beg- gi What is your occupation?” “I'm a printer.” Lawyer Sillers said he knew the defend- ant. “We were boys together,” he said, “and I'll do the best I can with him. I think 1 have scme influence over him. With_the lawyer's promise to act the part of a reformer, the judge released Harrison. Several weeks ago a man, who said his name was Jim Anderson, arrived here from scme other jurisdiction, and has attempted to live on the charity of persons he meets on the streets. He has been arrested more than on and last night Policeman McCort acrekton! him. “I found him staggering around the street an night, begging for money,” the officer said. “Guilty,” the prisoner said when ar- raigned. “Thirty days.” Sent Down. An old man with gray hair and beard was next in line. He answered the name John Riley, and raid he was guilty of vagrancy. “He's been boarding in Swampoodle,” said Policeman Newkirk, “and yesterday he was put out of his boarding house. He came to the station and asked to be sent down.” “I think,” sald Mr. Pugh, “that a six months’ sentence would be a charity to him. He has his baggage with him, and @ home is what he wants. “How long do you want?” the old maa was acked. “Til pension day.” ‘When is that?” James Melville says he is willing to work et anything. “Yesterday I was given a job on the new pcst office on the iron work and I was to have gone to work today.” “That's good news for The Star,” re- marked Judge Kimball, “one more man on the works.” “I'm a printer,” said Melville's compan- icn. “I came here because I heard there hea plenty of work in the government of- ice. ‘And,” remarked the judge “there are five men and plenty of Congressmen look- ing after each job.” “Pereonal bonds,” sald the judge. “And,” he added to Melville, “you go right down to the post office building and go to work.”* Charles Vetter, a cripple, went in Fritz Reuter’s saloon last night under the in- fluence of liquor and begged money. Then he was put out and the actions of the liquor men 80 offended him that he smash- ed the $100 plate glass window. He was sent down for vagrancy and fined $20 for breaking the glass. ‘Ihere were a number of other tramps in the procession and several of them were released to leave the city, while others were sent down. ———__ General Agent Wood Acquitted.
