Religious hallucinations have of late so affected the mind of Amanda Barkman, # Woman residing near Hancock, on the Ches- apeake and Ohio canal, that day before yesterday she met ay voluntary and hor- rible death, under the impression that she was doing commendable gacrifice to the Lord. Stories of martyrs and their deaths had taken such a hold upon her that she resolved to die like one, and while alone saturated her clothes with kerosene, stole to an outhouse and there set fire to her clothes, Her sister, who had returned to a lower room of the house, happened to glance out toward the shea and saw smoke issuing therefrom. She suspected that the over religious girl was in some manner con- cerned there and hastened over. She saw the door blockaded on the inside with wood horses, old chairs and other thrown-aside furniture. Seeing an ax lying near, she seized it and burst the door open forcibly. The tenant of the place was found, with all her clothes burned from her body and horribly baked by the flames. She was dead in a few moments. The suicide was forty-six years old. She was the daugh: ter of Philip Barkman, a man well kno throughout that section. Miss Barkman had sald several times that she intended dying as she did. SSS Anti-Saloon Lengue.
