Mr. H. A. Linger, er., presi- dent of the association, was besieged by friends cf the saloon people, presenting pe- titions by members of the association re- questing a special meeting of the associa- tion. The petitions themselves did not state any date for the meeting, but those presenting them asked that a meeting be called for tonight. President Linger in- formed the petitioners that he could not call a meeting fer tonight, as there would be too little time to properly notify the members, but said, if desired, he would call a meeting for Saturday night. ‘This | however, was undesirable for the appli- |cants and the petitions were withdrawn. | The resolutions do not affect the wholesale | dealers, and It 1s understood that they | will not take further notice of them. The Associated Charities, under the su- pervision of Mr. J. W. Tolson, have been very busy recently attending to the wants of the poor and needy, but applicants have | been so numerous that they have found it | necessary to make a call for provisions, clothing and money, to aid them in their | work. The Star was selected as a medium to convey the information to residents of | Anacostia, and Mr. Tolson announces that he will be glad to receive anything from citizens, and requests all who can to gend something to be distributed to the poor of the town. Mrs. Mary Burr fs on a visit to relatives in Baltimore. ‘There was a well attended business meet- ing of the Baptist Church last night, Rev, Hugh T. Stevenson presiding. Reports of the varicus committees were presented and adopted. Mr. James R. Williams presented the report of the auditing committee, and Superintendent of the Sunday School Chas. R. Burr read an encouraging report re- garding that branch of the church work. An increase in membership of scholars and teachers was noted. ‘The Ladies’ Ald Society reported, through its president, Mrs. 8. Frost, and Mr. Beonl Milstead spoke of the work of the trustees, i day | in the government after which the “Happy Five,” @ myster- cus -organization of five members of the church, reported having had water put in the church, and to have attended to sev- eral financial matters. ‘he annual appro- priation for the year was made, amounting to $1,500. Following this, the clerk was authorized to notify the excise board that the church had adopted resolutions protest- ing against William H. Rose, jr. Hillsdale, D. C., has a citizens’ associa- tion, and night before last it held a special meeting. Lawyer Moss was in attendance at the meeting of the Anacostia Citizens’ Association as a visitor, and when he re- turned to Hillsdale,.after hearing the ac- tion of the Anacostians, decided to attempt similar action. ‘rhe, meeting in Hillsdale was well attended, ;and after but little dis- cussion a resolution protesting against John Madigan, wholesale dealer on Mon- roe street; George H. Gray Company, on Bridge street, and William Rose, on Harri- son street, was unanimously adopted, and the secretary of the association notified to so inform the excise board. An interesting suit was opened in Justice Carroll Smith’s court yesterday. Hunter Ware, a well-known horse trader, was the defendant. ‘Lhe plaintiff, an Anacostian, sued Ware for fifty dollars damage, claim- ing that Ware sold him a horse one night recently which he warranted perfectly sound, and the next morning the purchaser discovered that the horse was blind. ‘The defendant will have a hearing today. —— NOT. ADVISABLE. Commissioners Do Not Favor Lower- ing of the Telephone Rates. The Commissioners yesterday made a report to Congress upon Senate bill 2047, to regulate the telephone service in the District of Columbia. This bill proposes to make it unlawful for any person or tele- phone company doing business in the District of Columbia to charge or receive’ more than $50 per an- num for the use of a telephone on a separate wire; $40 for each telephone there being not mora than two on a wire; $0 for each telephone, there being not more than three on a wire, and S25, there being four or more on the same wire. The maximum charge at present is $125 per an- num for a single telephone on a metallic circuit. The Commissioners in their report think it not-advisable to pass the bill at this time. They advise, however, that the telephone company be compelled to furnish government telephones free of cost and pay a tax of 5 per cent of gross earnings, as compensation for use of publié streets. eS Price of Gai The Commissioners yesterday afternoon wrete the following letter to Senator Har- chairman of the committee on the District of Columbia: “The Commissioners of the District of Columbia invite attention to the pending bill for reducing the price of gas to $1 per thousand, which they think ought to re- ceive favorable action at this session of Congress, The gas company has derived larger profits than any other company oc- cupying the public streets of this city with entre immunity from taxation, except on the real estate, and can easily afford the reduction proposed. As an illustration of the value of the privileges which this com- pany enjoys it may be stated that in Phila. @ 4 WHEFe Ui DiGiUcApaliy OWhs Lue 3 plant, the profits from private lighting erables the city to light the streets free of ccst, thus effecting a saving to the city of about $1,000,000 per annum.
