Mrs. Sophia Freeman Sears, an aged and estimable member ef St. Andrew's Church, died suddenly at her home, 1209 O street, as the result of a rupture of a blood vessel in the brain. Mrs. Sears was the widow of J. W. Sears, who was well known in Washing- ton. Mrs. Sears leaves a funeral took place this aftern o'clock at St. Andrew's Church, terment was at Oak Hill. ——---— Funeral of Mr. J. H. Gridte The funeral of Mr. James H. Gridley took place last Friday afternoon from his late residence, 215 E street northwest. Mr. Gridley was superintendent of th al oltice of the Scientific American Patent Agency, where he had been employed for many years. The funcral was largely at- tended, and the services were conducted by Revs. Dr. Addison and Childs of ‘Trinity Church. The active pallbearers were from the local office of the agency, and seyeral of them had been business associates of Mr. Gridiey for thirty years, eee Fire This Morning. Shortly after 7:30 o'clock this morning fire broke out in the store of Zellers & Company, steam heating and ventilating engineers, at 1406 P street northwest. The alarm was turned in by Officer Miles of Riggs market from box 241, which brought cut engine companies Nos. 7, 9, 1, and truck B. The fire originated from an explosion of ofl in the cellar of the building, where a number of workmen had commenced work for the day. __ Jackson Day. McLean were host and hostess on Saturday night. They received in the drawing room euite, and Mrs. Bugher stood near the entrance to the ball room to add another welcome. The scene, after several hundred guests had as- sembled, was an ideal one. The house ts so spacious that the four or five hundred guests could move about comfortably in every direction while a large part of the younger set were dancing in the ball room, A fine orchestra was in the music gallery, and at 11, when the doors of the dining hall were opened, supper was served, while the guests were seated at small round ta- bles. Mrs. McLean wore a superb toilet of white satin and sable, and her diamond necklace of many strands and pendants and a diamond diadem in her hair. Miss Julia Grant, who is her guest, wore pink satin.
