James F. Oyster, 900 Pa. | THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN — Some 24,000 Are Wearing Santa Olaus Badges. Some Material Increases to the Gen- eral Fund That Will Alleviate Much Suffering. Having escaped from the clutches of the law—by selling some badges to the blind goddess—The Evening Star Santa Claus Club is still doing business at a great rate. The grand jury did not take all the pins and blue ribbons that were in stock yester- day, but kindly left several hundred for the rest of the world to wear. They may be obtained at The Star office at‘any price, from 10 cents up to $100. Badges will even be sold for more than $100 on the pinch. If any one wants one badly enough to pay that much for it, however, he had better come forward quickly, for the store is be- ing diminished all the time. The work of distributing the badges among the school children closed today, when the schools ceased work for the holl- day recess. It is estimated that very nearly 24,000 children have joined the club, which is thereby enabled to do much more good than last year, when about 19,000 badges were sold to the young folks in this way. ‘There will be a meeting at The Star office tomorrow afternoon, at 3:30 o'clock, of all the supervising principals of the city, the principals of the high schools and the mem- bers of the executive committee of the club, for the purpose of collecting the money obtained from the sale of badges and of distributing it among the various divisions in proportion to their needs. The list of contributors keeps getting longer, but it is not long enough yet by half. Dr. Stafford on ‘Hamlet.”—“Hamlet” was the subject of a lecture which Rev. D. J. Stafford delivered to a large and in- terested audience at Metzerott Hall last night. Dr. Stafford is an eloquent talker, and last night he described his idea of the character of Hamlet in a graphic manner. Dr. Stafford was introduced to the au- dience by Gen. Hooker of Mississippl, who took occiston to pay high tribute to the Emergency Hospital, for the benefit of which the lecture was given. Gen. Hooker said he could speak from practical expe- | rience about the hospital, having been an inmate of it at one time. He pronounced the hospital one of the noblest of all char- ities, and spoke in the highest terms of its management and the good that it ac- complishes. The Church Hi: Now Cleared Away Its Debits. ‘The Church of the Ascension, 12th strect and Masaschusetts avenue, being at last freed from debt, was consecrated to the service of God yesterday morning with the impressive exercises and ritual of the Protestant Episcopal Church. It. was the most interesting church celebration of the sort in this city in a long time and attracted a large gathering of clergymen not only from the District, but from Mary- land and Virginia. The exercises were pre- sided over by the bishop of Maryland and the bishop of southern Virginia; Dr. Ran- dolph was also present. The church is a memorial to Rev. Dr. William Pinckney, fifth bishop of Maryland, and the service yesterday marked the close of the twen- tieth year from the time the ground was donated for the church by the late Mr. W, W. Corcoran. All of the morning yesterday was occu- pied by the consecration service, and at its cenclusion all those who were present were entertained at luncheon by the ladies of the church. In the afternoon a meet- ing of the Washington convocation was held. The principal matter was the con- sideration of the question of funds for the endowment of the episcopate in the proposed diocese of Washington. Contribu- tions were reported to the amount of $3,500, making $28,500 of the $50,000 neces- sary for the endowment. Bishop Paret presided over the consecra- tion services, which began at 10 o'clock in the morning. The bishop of southern Virginia preached the sermon. Rev. Alfred Harding, rector of St. Paul's Church, Washington, was the master of ceremo- nies. The morning prayer was read by Rev. Dr. Mackay Smith, rector of St. John’s Church. The lessons were read by the archdeacon of Washington, Dr. Childs, and by Dr. McKim, rector of the Church of the Epiphany. The other parts of the consecration service were taken by Rev. Albert Stuart, rector of Christ Church, Georgetown; Rev. Mr. Aspinwall and Arch- deacon Stokes, besides Dr, Elllott, the rec- tor of the parish. Bishop Paret was the celebrant at the holy communion. The music was rendered by the vested choir, under the direction of Mr. Camp, the choir- master of the church. EAA A Christmas Venture. Along the B street line ef country people some dealers have been giving short weight, prircipally in butter and potatoes. Judge Kimball notified the officers that they should arrest every person found giving short weight or measuring potatoes instead of weighing them, and he will enforce the penalty.
