F., was presented by his associates with a handsome jewel as a token of their high esteem and of their appreciation of his devotion to the interests of their order, The jewel, upon its face, is ornamented with the three links, inclosing the letters F. L. and T. upon the white, the blue and the red, and the revers2 bears the name and date. Noble Grand W. P. Armstrong made the presentation speech, to which Mr. Johnston feelingly replied. Mr. Thos. P. Moore of Metropolis Lodge was present at the meeting and addressed the Brook- land brethren. The Brookland Literary Club of last win- ter has reorganized under somewhat dif- ferent auspices and will this season be known as the Dickens Literary Club, some portions of each evening being devoted to the works of the famous author. The pres- ent enroliment of members is Captain and Mrs. Joseph C. Baumer, Colonel and Mrs. Juan Lewis, Doctor and Mrs. H. J. Pen- rod, Dr. J. B. Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Wal- ter W. As a safeguard against the ravages of fire it has been proposed to sink wells at convenient distances along the principal streets of this town, where water will at all times be conventent. At a meeting of the county commission- ers held here yesterday a large amount of routine business was transacted, the ses- sion lasting until late in the afternoon. A large number of bills were considered, and the following were passed and ordered to be paid: Robert B. Peter and Henry C. England (appearance fee), $6.67; Thomas F. Thompson (registration account), $82.14. Road accounts—firet district, Jesse Stew- art, $30.80; P. M. Dorsey, $65.92. Second district, W. E. King, $4. During the past two or three years the commissioners have paid mere attention than formerly to pik- ing porticns of the public roads in all parts of the county, and portions of these roads heretofore almost impassable during the winter and spring months have been put in good condition. The board has recently invited bids for furnishing stone for piking on the Laurel road, near Robert Stabler’s gate, and also between the line of Asa M. Stabler’s farm and the Ashton turnpike. Arrangements are heing perfected for putting up the poles and stringing the wire on the new telepnone line between this place and Sandy Spring. Last week the managers passed over the route and se- cured the right of way where it was neces- scry to pass over private property. At this place the line will be connected with the national bank and the court house. Resolutions of respect to the memory of the late Wm. B. Miller of this county have been passed by Lodge 89, Knights of Py- thiss, of Great Falls, Md. Mr. Wm. Hoyle, who was accidentally shet and seriously wounded by Melvin Jones, near Barnesville, some two weeks ago, is in a fair way to recovery. Mr. A. B. Almoney, formerly of this place, has recently been appointed to a prominent position in the Hagerstown Bank. For fourteen years Mr. Almoney occupied the position of assistant cashier in the First National Bank of Hagerstown, which place he resigned some weeks ago. He is well known in the District, and was for some time engaged in business in Georgetown. Notwithstanding the hard times of the past year building operations are progres- sing in all parts of the county. Miss Alice Gardiner has recently completed a hand- some residence near Burnt Mills, the plans for the same being furnished by Mr. John Henderson of Washington. Dr. J. E. Deets has completed a tine dwelling house in the east end of Clarksburg. ‘The finishing touches are being put on a fine cottage residence for Mr. Archibald in “The Park” at this place. FALLS CHURCH. The reunion and sociable held by Pioneer Lodge of Good Templars at Odd Fellows’ Hall last night was a very enjoyable affair and was largely attended, over seventy members being present. The program of musical and literary exercises was in charge of Miss Margie Garner, and consist- ed of the following, viz: Chorus, “Sound the Battle Cry,” by the lodge; recitations, Mrs. J. B. Gould, Miss Ida Quick; cornet solo, Joseph Webster; instrumental music, Mrs. M. M. Erwi: solo, Mrs. Edward Eells, M. M. Erwin; address, Rev. J. T. This lodge is in a prosperous condition, some fifteen mem- bers having been initiated and reinstated during the past two months. Dr. George B. Fadely, formerly of this town, now of Baltimore, is visiting friends here. . Messrs. W.H. Nowlan, Elmer Crump and Frank Newman are now on a hunting trip to Clifton. Mrs. Maria Bailey, widow of Lewis Bai- ley, died at Bailey’s Cross Roads on Mon- day, in her eighty-seventh year. ae ES KENSINGTON. Marshall of the Warner Memorial Presbyterian Church of this place preached on Sunday afternoon at Linden Presbyterian Church, the charge of Rev. P. P. Flournoy. The Epworth League of St. Paul’s M. E. Church was led, on Sunday evening last, by Miss May Lewis. The meeting of the members of the Noyes Library Association for the election of di- rectors, which was to have been held on Saturday evening last, has been postponed and will take place on Friday evening at 7:30 o'clock, Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Hinsdale have re- turned from a three months’ visit to Wyo- ming. Miss Nan Brecht of Washington is the guest of Mrs. A. H. Kinnear. A meeting will be held in the library building on Tuesday evening to make final arrangements for the starting of a literary and debating society. ‘The Library Association of the St. Paul's M. E. Church met on Friday evening last at the residence of Rev. and Mrs. R. M. Mocre, with the president, Mr. G. W. R. Stokes, in the chair. The semi-annual visitation of the officers of the Grand Commandery United Order of the Golden Cross was made to National Commandery Monday evening. The officers were examined by Grand Commander Per- ry and Past Grand Commander Ehle as to their duties as officers, which they passed in a creditable manner, and were compli- mented by the grand commander. Past Grand Commander Yates in a neat speech on behalf of National Commandery pre- sented the grand commander with a large cake, in the shape of a pyramid, surmount- ed with a golden cross. The grand com- mander briefly expressed his thanks for the present. Dr. Chas. Allen read a hu- morous poem, Mrs. Adelaide Payne of Goodwill Commandery recited" Which Shall It Be?’ and the National Commandery quartet gave a vocal selection. The audi- ence was large and embraced members from every commandery in the jurisdic- tion. At the close of the meeting refresh- ments were served by the ladies of the cemmandery. A reception and banquet was given last night by the members in Philadelphia and vicinity of the American Society of Civil £ngineers to Col. William P. Craighill, the president of the society, at the Stenton House. There was a large representation, both of the local members and of others who came from a distance. Some of the latter came several hundred miles. A large number of letters were read from distant members who were unable to attend, ex- pressing their regret at mot being able to do honor to Col. Craightil by their pres- ence. It was the first compliment of the kind given to a president of the society, which shows the esteem and respect en- tertained for Col. Craighill by this large and intelligent body of men, whose mem- bership includes all the leading engineers fm the United States and Canada. After an elaborate banquet a number of toasts were drunk, Col. Craighill being the speaker in response to the sentiment, guest.” It is the expectation of Col.
