Narrative to Detective Crawford —Tries to Bribe the Latter. The story of the life of H. H. Holmes, the insurance swindler, was gathered from him on the way from Boston to Philadel- phia by Detective Thomas Crawford. In retelling the story Crawford began by stating that during the night Holmes of- fered him (Crawford) $0 if he would iet him hypnotize him. After Crawford had been thrown into a trance Holmes was to make his escape. Holmes told him, he says, that he had learned hypnotism from a doctor and could fix it easily. Crawford refused the offer. in talking to the detective Holmes said he was born and raised in Burlington, Vt., and taught school there when he was fifteen years of age. Later on he went to college in Burlington, paying his way by working during vacation. Then he went to a college in Michigan, where he claims that he met the doctor friend from whom he had secured the body which he claims was passed off as the remains of the miss- ing Pitezel. Twelve years ago, he says, he and this doctor became short of money and got the idea of beating an insurance company. His friend tcok out a policy for $1 and then Holmes procured a body in Chi- cago, took it east, and palmed it off as the remains of the doctor. The insurance was paid, and the money served to defray the college expenses of the conspirators. Several times after this, Holmes says, they repeated the trick and cheated many insurance companies with success. Later on, Holmes said he had his own life in- sured for $20,000, and went on to Rhode Island, taking with him a corpse. He went to a seaside town and registered at a hotel under his right rame. He went out on the beach at night and placed the body, which had been charred and mutilated, on the shore in such a manner as to appear as if it had been washed up by the waves. Then Holmes, with the nerve of a more honest man, shaved off his mustache, went back to the hotel and registered under another name. He inquired whether Holmes was in or net. When the hotel people found him missing, of course an inquiry was started and the body found. Holmes, however, did not succeed in col- lecting his $20,000, but he managed to elude the punishment of the crime. In this recital Holmes proceeded to pour out the details of the murder in which he was involved in Chicago. While in that city, he said, living with his first wife, he formed the acquaintance of a pretty type- writer. The two lived together ip the out- skirts of the city. This girl had an elder sister who became jealous. One day while he was away, Holmes says, the two girls met and had a violent arrel, during which the younger girl a stool and struck the elder sister the head, killing her almost instantly. When Holmes returned and saw what had been done, he says, he packed the body in a trunk, weighted it down with rocks and in the dead of night dropped it in Lake Michigan.
