10 So SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA, ‘The week of prayer is being observed In church circles in Anacostia with consider- able interest. The Christian Endeavor Society of Garden Memorial Church and the Epworth League of the Methodist Church are the most ardent in their serv- fees. Last night was the second meeting. The subject was the same at both churches. It was “Marching Orders.” The Epworth League service was under the leadership of Mr. H. A. Linger, chairman of the spir- itual work department. The singing was under the direction of Miss Cora C. Mc- Lean. The services were opened with prayer by Mr. George Thomas. John Fort Tead a paper reviewing the work of the foung people as an important factor in the church. Following this Miss May Hal- lowell rendered a sacred vocal selection. The subject, “Marching Orders,” was dis- Gusaed in an excellent address by Mr. H. A. Linger and short talks by Rev. James McLaren and Dr. A. M. Green. .At the Presbyterian Church Mr. C. 0. Bohrer conducted the exercises and Mr. Paul Simpson directed the music. Address- p aay - the subject were made by Mr. Carle- Snell ana Charles Robinson. The Anacostia repgesentatives at the Baptist convention are Rev. Hugh T. Stev- enson, Mrs. Hugh T. Stevenson, Mrs. B. Davison, Mrs. Thomas Allen, Mr. J. R. Williams, Rev. George Bowman and Mr. J. &. Davison. The entertainment for the benefit of the of Anacostia was held last night at Keasontc Hall. The talent was all from ashington, and the Cecilian Quartet, composed of four of Washington's most mising young singers, made quite an impression on the music-loving people of Anacostia. They rendered the concert waltz and Annie Laurie, harmonized by liey Buck, in a charming manner, the it mentioned bearing evidence of careful training and excellent voice culture. Miss Wilson, the director of the quartet, assist- ed in the concert. Solo numbers were given ry Miss Alice Pillsbury, the first contralto of the quartet; Misses Mertie Thompson and Helen Nye, the two sopranos; Miss Linda Jones, the second contralto; Mrs. W. L.Wilson Mrs. Gertrude Bangs-Burns and Miss Minnie Brown. Financially the con- cert is regarded as much of a success ag it was musically. Last night was a gala one in Masonry in Anacostia. The occasion was the grand visitation of Naval Royal Arch Chapter, No. 6. ‘The entire room was a mass of floral decoration. The address of the even- ing was made by Mr. Simon Wolf, who lectured on “The Remarkable Increase of 88 per cent in the Membership of the Ana- costia Lodge.” Other prominent Washing- ton Masons made addresses, after which recess was taken and refreshments served. The Anacostia Benjo and Glee Club met lest night at the home of William N. Fish- er on Washington street. Vocal solos were rendered by Messrs. Samuel Moccabee, Geo. King, Edward Redfield and William Fish- |* er, also banjo renditions by Mr. William Espey and Edward Redfield. A pleasant surprise party was tendered Charles and Mary Bateman last evening at their home, 314 Jefferson street. The young ones enjoyed the evening by the playing of games, after which refreshments were served. Among those present were Taylor Branson, Annie Purcell, Abbie But- ler, Frank Osborne, Frank McGinnis, Rosie Purcell, Archie Williams, Allen Williams, Cora Osborne, Frank Bateman, Mack Hoopes, Thomas Simpson, Oliver Brust, Frank Barse, Okie Ewald, Harry Roach, Louis Bateman, Ella Simpson, Minnie Wat- gon, Bessie Padgett, Addie Padgett, Nellie Gardiner, Laura Williams, Nellie Roach, Nellie Bulig, Nettie Milstead and Mary Stephenson. Anacostia Tent of Rechabites met last night at Haines’ Hall. There were two in- itiations of new members. Visitors were entertained from Columbia and Washington ‘Tents. The Ladies’ Aid Society of the Presby- terian Church held a meeting today at the home of Mrs. J. H. Simpson, at Capitol View. Thomas W. Scott of Jackson street is on a visit to friends at Landsdale, Md. John Fastnaught & Bro. of Twining City have completed the erection of a new brick store and dwelling. Mr. Groumsell, a well-known aschitect, who resides near Suitland, has recovered from a severe attack of typhoid fever. There was g big row night before last in Hillsdale as“a result of a colored ball given by a South Washington club. On that night Douglass Hall was ablaze with the toughest element which has gathered there from South Washington for some time. Acting Sergeant Anderson had a detail of two policemen on duty to keep in order the 300 colored dancers. It was a hard thing to do and frequent scraps oc- curred. About midnight the whole affair broke up in a scrap. Nothing serious oc- curred at the hall, however, but down on Munroe street near Maple avenue two col- ored men named James Humphreys and Albert Bush engaged in a fight over a colored woman named Mary Tasker. The middie of the street was the scene of the combat, and for a few minutes there was a genuine slugging match. This was followed by a roll in the streets, which was broken up by the arrival of Police Officer Marr and Acting Sergeant Anderson. The woman meanwhile was uttering loud noises and ertes of murder. The police gave chase to the men who made a break for the rear of some of the houses fronting on Monroe street. Bush succeeded in getting in the yard of Mr. Thomas Reardon, where He was. discovered by Officer Marr. Then there ensued a fight between the officer and prisoner, resulting in a victory for the former. Meanwhile Sergt. Anderson had arrested Humphreys. Both men were locked up at the station house, and the woman was also arrested. Citizens of this | part of the city are preparing a protest to the Commissioners against issuing li- censes to these people who, being refused licenses in South Washington, are given one to hold their balls at Hillsdale. Acting Sergeant Anderson says the affairs are so dangerous that it necessitates frequentiy one-half of the night force to prevent bloodshed. Temperance people in Anacostia are con- siderably elated over the recent communi- cation from the exeise board to William Rose, a Harrison street saloonkeeper. The communication insists on the obtaining of additional signatures to his application. This, the temperance people assert, it impossible for him to obtain, as they have the signatures of those people against the saloon. —_— LANGDON. Mr. W. R. Ber§y of Winthrop Heights has been appointed mail carrier between the station and post office at Langdon, and entered upon his duties Monday. Miss Martha Radtke of Green Vale is lying ill at the home of her parents with malarial fever. Mr. O. T. Now that contracts for construction have been warped as far az Laurel, the people feel Zitain that there will toon he a healthy competition with the steam roads, when ft is aidicipated that the rate to commuters will be reduced to correspond with that | ngw made for Brookland on the other branch. At present there is a wide dis- crimination, though the distance is the sBamc. Dr. Lafayette C. Looms of Winthrop Heights is erecting two iarge fome residences on Baltimore street. Co' tractor ‘ashears of Washington is the builder. - Carl Browne, Coxcy’s Ji this vicinity yesterday, and left for Phila- delphia last evening, after completing ar- rangements for the erection of permanent barracks to replace Camp Lost Liberty near Highland station, Maryland. And I shall make a speech from ‘apitol steps on Christmas day morn- he added, as he stepped aboard the train. Mr. Primrose, also of the Coxey contingent, accompanied Browne to Phila- delphia. For some years, with each successive change in the railway schedule, Langdon has secured additional train service. The new schedule, which went into effect Sun- day last, however, is an exception, the service at this station remaining as be- fore without change in any way. prac nety ail BRIGHTWOOD.
