This yearning for printed things is phy- siological without explanation, and medical history has not a similar case on record, except that of Dase, the famous mathema- ticlan, who gave evidence of his phenome- nal talent in early years. But this was all he ever knew. The question is asked by the scientists who have examined little Otto whether he will develop in other directions as strikingly as he has in this. Fortunately the parents have no intention of exhibiting their wonderful offspring for money, and the case is watched by the medical fraternity with unabated interest. WHAT IS IN A NAME Origin of Patronymics in the English -- Language. Location of a House, The Kind of Labor One Performed, Official Duties Responsible. In an article on the origin of famSy names a writer in the New York Adver- tiser says that a very large class of respect- able names Has arisen from ‘he practice of appending to the individu:] name an addi- tional designation indicating the residence. When the man came from a town or city was John of Bolton, or Thomas @ York, names easily adopted to family use, but when he was a mere villager and was called Jack or Tom in common with a seore more of the same vicinity, it was an easy matter to individualize him by indicating his local habitation, with, reference to some well- known object or feature of the village. In the old English rolls instances of this kind ere extremely numerous. His house by the brook gave Thomas at Erook 2 name his family still bears; the Atwaters, Bywaters, Waters, Ponds, Wells, Atwells ard others had a similar origin. The Woods and Atwoods once lived by the forest, while the Lees, Leighs, and probably also the Lays, had ‘their home near the common or village.pasture. The Boroughs were once only plain vil- lagers, with nothing else to distinguish them, but the Ridges, Fields,*Cliffs, Hills, Gates, Oaks, Noakes, Ashes, Orchards and others were more fortunate, having a home so located that the original possessors of these names were differentiated. from their neighbors by virtue of residence. From a House's Location. Even the location of a house in‘a village was sometimes enough to win a> name for the occupant; if it was near the place of worship, he became Robert the Churcher, or Robert Church; if near the pump, the Pumper, or Wellman, or even Weller; if by the bridge, he was known as Bridger, Bridgeman, or Bridges. A house at ted of town gave the name Townsend: near the stile gave Styler or Styles; on a particular b petro Nagen wcingael Streeter, Lane or ner; by the lage cross, ve Cross, Crosser, Crossman. = i Illustrations of this kind are almost in- numerable, however, as anyone can see who will for himself scan a directory and observe how numerous ‘are the Groves, Lands, Homes, Knowls, Combes, Heaths, Crofts and others, whose names arose from places of residence. ; ~ Grea: numbers of family names have their origin in an ofhce held by the origina’ possessor of the cognomen and transmitted to his descendants as of right. It t# quite possible, for instance, that the Dukes, Counts, Barons, Marquises and other such names have been regularly transmitted from father to son from a time when the original was really a man of rank, but it is more likely thut the Kings, Princes, Popes and some others were originally attendants on these exalted personages, and so were known as connected with them, thus ac- quiring the names, while in some cases the names were probably bestowed in ridicule, and in others they, perhaps arose from the pageants encouraged by the church at certain seasons, in which the villagers: played the parts of royal, priestly or noble characters. To trace some of these official names is no slight matter, but others offer aot: seeation: ee e Judges and Ju of the present day have no evie in ascertaining” the original of their names, but for the original Corner we must go back to the crowner or cor- oner, or official who exercised many other functions besides that of inquiring into the circumstances attending a violent death. The Sergeants of the present had ancestors who were probably not military men, but sergeants at the bar, and the fathers of the = and Biddles were the beadles of the Holders of Office. The Creers were originally the criers of the towns; the Trompours were the trum- peters; the Meyers, Burgesses, Councellors and Counsellmans were in one way or another connected with village or municipal government. The Cleavers were not at first butchers, but clavigers, or Key bearers to the city government, while the Vicars, -Par- sons, Priests, Chaplains, Clerks and Clarks, Secretans, Sextons, Priors, Cagons, Monks, Aumoners and a few others no doubt had a family beginning in the church, .and/in the Wandering pilgrims, or pelerins, as the French called them, are found the originals of our Pelerins, Palmers and some others. The labors of the farm and the various duties of country life have materially in- creased our stock of family names. The Thatchers, Thackers and Thackerays re- call the days when a man was employed to gover the houses with straw, while the Helers were of the same origin, hele meaning simply to cover, and the Hellers, Helliers and Hellmens have no better an- cestry than, the Thatchers, Connected With Building. The first Tyler undoubtedly covered roofs with tiles, and the Shinglers performed the same office with small boards. The Limers prepared the lime, and the Dawbers, orig: inally Daubers, laid the bricks or stones end daubed them with mud cr mortar, The Cotmans and Cotters were at first peasants; 80 were the Crofts and Crofters. The Boarders and Boardmans were also peasants, but such as were compelled to find the wherewithal tc supply the table of the nobleman who owned, them. The Swains at first kept hogs; the Hinds looked after cattle. The Tillmans were plowmen, the Mowers cut the grass and the Dickers, Dickmans and Dykers looked after the ditches. The Hedges and Hedgers testify to the antiquity of the hedge as a defense against depredating animals, and the Maries, Marlers, Clays, Clayers and Chalk: ers bear witness to the substances used as fertilizers. The Gardiners do not need to have their name explained, but the Viners were no other than cultivators of the vines, and the Dressers may have belonged to the same connection. The Hackers and Hackmans tcok their names, not from carriage drivers, but -from woodchoppers, while the Stod- dards recall the stot or bullock herd, and the Yeatherd or Yeatmans and the Cowerds are branches of the same occupation. The Miilers need not be told of the pro- fession exercised by their ancestry, but it will surprise some to know that the Boul- ters, Riddlers, Sivers, Fanners, Shovellers and Showlers all had ancestors who in one ime or another were connected with the manufacture of flour. — +++ ELECTRIC HOUSE FOUNTAIN. Worked by Electricity It Can Be Car- ried From Room to Room. An electrically operated fountain, de- signed as an ornament to a drawing room, and brought out in Saxony, Germany, ts something of a novelty in the United States, but the combination is a perfectly practical one, and, being self-coatained, can be readily removed from place to place, adding distinction to various parts of the house, if desired. ‘This ornament consists of a tastefully decorated flower stand, with a smalj aqua- rium and a spouting jet of water. Under the level of the plants and flowers is a square zinc tray, containing an electric motor attached to a small pressure pump, The zinc tray also acts as a reservoir for water, and the pump, operated by the motor, keeps a constant circulation through the aquarium and fountain above. Cur- | sent for the motor 1s obtained from a pow erful battery cell placed on @ separate shelf beneath the zinc tray. The battery used is new, and, its con- struction is not without interest. It con- sists of a brass cylinder, taking the place of the ordinary battery jar, and an Inside brass cylinder, the latter being perforated, to promote the action of the battery fluid. ‘A porous cup with a zine pole Is. placed within the inside cylinder. The space be- tween the two brass cylinders is filled with bluestone (sulphate of copper) and the space between the inner cylinder and the porous cup is filled with a concentrated solution of sulphate of copper. Inside the porous cup, surrounding the zinc, is a strong, solution of rock ealt. This battery is sald to be very effective, but when not in use the porous cup must be removed, —— Many New Features of Inte At pure food show th week.-—Adv' pen ment Ripans for constipation.
