Messer, one of Anacostia’s most respected citizens, fell to the pave- ment yesterday on Monroe street, suffering with an attack of vertigo. Henry A.Linger, dr., of the firm of A. M. Green & Co. assis' ed the aged man into a carriage and con- veyed him to his home on Anacostia Heights. This morning he was reported in an improved condition. Mr. Henning and family of Twining City have moved to Virginia avenue and 12th sireet in the city. Mr. Norman North, son of Rev. J. B. North, is taking, in addition to his studies at the Eastern High School, a special course at the Columbian University. The regular meeting of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union was held yes- lerday at the residence of Mrs. E. H. Grant on Anacostia Heights. The Brotherhood of St. Andrew of Em- manuel P. E. Church met last night. Rev. W. G. Davenport presided. Mr. Davenport reported that Anacostia chapter had inter- ested itself in an effort to establish a chapter at Beltsville, for which purpose a meett was held at the Beltsville Epis- copal Church. Those present were Rev. W. G. Davenport, Barnabas Bryan, Col. Clay and Mr. Gordon. John A. Logan Post, G. A. R., convened in Masonic “Hall last night, the occasion being the inspection of members. Frank Eisinger, jr., child of Mr. Frank Elsinger of Lincoln street, is ill with ty- phoid fever. Several Anacostians who attend the high schools, were home yesterday, the schools having been closed for fumigation. Mrs. J. B. North of Minnesota avenue is attending the meeting of the executive committee of the Woman's National Press Association at the home of its president, at 1101 _K street northwest. When the heaith inspector makes his ‘weekly visit to Anacostia tomorrow his at- tention will be called to the dangerous con- dition of the sidewalk at Jefferson and Pcik streets. Rains of short time ago and the street drainage have caused a por- tion of the sidewalk to be washed away ard a hole to appear at the turn of the curb. The residents of the locality term it @ menace to health, and unless something is done soon will circulate a petition to the Commissioners regarding its condition. A petition to the Commissioners resulted in prompt remedial acts in the case of Mon- Toe street, and it is believed will be attend- ed _with good results in this case. Work on the Pierce street sewer still pregresses. The park, contrary to the de- sire of many Anacostians, has been torn up to let the sewer be laid, but the foreman promises that the ground will be leveled off the same as before. Owing to the stunted growth of the present vegetation it will be replanted and the park much added to. Anacostia Chapter, Epworth League, met last night in the league parlors of the Methodist Church. Dr. A. M. Green pre- sided. Reports were heard from the com- mittees, comprising the various depart- ments. The literary department has open- ed its series of monthly entertainments, and the entertainment department was in- structed to confer with the pastor, Rev. James McLaren, regarding a _ recep- tion to be given the public during the week attending the celebration of the twenty- fifth anniversary of the church. ae BROOKLAND. Maj. and Mrs. G. C. Goodloe went from Woodreve yesterday to their Washington home at Kalorama Heights for the winter. ‘The many friends of Dr. and Mrs. H. J. Penrod will be glad to know that they will return in a few days from Baltimore and take possession of their home on Mth street, Brookland. Little Millard Gleason had a recent nar- row escape from being killed at University station. A horse he was riding became un- mauageable and threw the boy off beside the safety gates, which were lowered for @ passing train, and he fortunately es- caped with a few bruises. At the conference of the Brookland M. E. congregation last evening Mr. I. S. Hol- lidge, Dr. T. Y. Hull and Mr. B. E. Murray were appointed a building committee and will soon inspect plans for a church edi- fice. A children’s song service will be held on Sunday next in the Town Hall by the chil- dren ofSt. Clement's P. E. mission. The order of Christmas exercises for the Queenstown Baptist Sunday school has been decided upon, and rehearsals will be begun next week. Next Sunday an important change of time will go into effect on the Metropolitan branch of the Baltimore and Ohio rail- road, by which the schedule from Univer- sity station will be somewhat affected. peeiinni e a KENSINGTO Miss Charlotte Ogden is spending a few weeks in Washington. Miss Nellie Beggs uf Columbus, Ohio, is the gwest of Mrs. J. K. Marks. Mr. George Gloyd of Newport News and Mr. Edmund A. Gloyd of Middlebrook, Md., have been visiting at the home of Mr. James Duvall. Dr. J. L. Devol of Parkersburg, W. Va., who is visiting his daughter, Mrs. Amiss, is quite ill. An entertainment for the benefit of the Ladies’ Aid Soctet; of the St. Paul’s M. BE. Church will be held Friday and Saturday evenings of this week. Mr. Curtice McCain has returned from a visit to Newburg, N. Y. Prepnrations are actively going on for the old folks’ concert for the benefit of the M. E. Church, which is to be given De- cember 3. 2 Mr. B. H. Warner and family, who have been spending the summer at their Ken- sington home, hive returned to the city fer the winter months. Workmen are engaged in digging a well on the school house premises. This is an improvement that has long been needed. Miss Eleanor D. Ogden is spending a few days in Washington. Mrs. Albert Trego and daughter Dorotha of Baltimore, who formerly resided in Kensington, visited their many friends here on Monday. Miss Mary Bickford of Washington, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. J. H. Fishback, returned home Tuesday. A very interesting meeting of the Home Missionary Society of the Warner Memor- ial Presbyterian Church was-held on Wed- nesday evening. The meeting was led by the president, Mrs. A. E. Hart, and enter- taining addresses were made by Mrs. W. M. Terrell, Mrs. H. K. Simpson and Mrs. A. H. Kinnear. A choir has been organized to lead the singing of the Christian Endeavor Society of the Warner Memorial Presbyterian Church. It will meet for practice fifteen minutes befor se-vice each Sunday even- ing. The following beve teen appointed chairmen of the different committees of the scciety: Lookout, Mr. H. K. Holland, president of the board of trustees of Brookeville Academy, a few days ago fell from a scaffolding and sprained one of his ankles so badly that he has since been confined to his home. Mr. Wm. Downs, a well-known citizen of the county, died on Friday last at nis home near Triadelphia, and on Sunday his funer- al took place at Mt. Carmel Churci. A tract of forty acres of land near Brookeville has been sold by Mrs. Mary Baker to Mr. O. Benson, for $1,400. Yesterday morning St. Mary's Cathoiic Church at his place was the scene of a largely attended marriage, the parties to the solemn contract being Mr. John F. Erter and Miss Mary M. Crane, both cf Montrose, this county. Rev, Father Rosen- steel officiated with the nuptial mass, the music being rendered by the entire church choir. Miss Bertie Poore of Tenleytown gracefully filled the position of maid of honor, and Mr. Michael Kelley acted as best man. The fair bride was attired in a traveling dress of steel gray cloth, with hat and gloves to match, and carriel a bunch of white chrysanthemums. The maid of honor was dressed in a handsome gray suit. The altar at which the cere- mony was performed was banked with a profusion of palms and flowers, the whole being brilliantly illuminated by red und white lights. At the conclusion of the ceremony the bridal party passed out of the church and were warmly congratulated by their numerous friends present, after which Mr. and Mrs. Erter left for a trip to the north. 4 ‘The parsonage adjoining St. Mary’s Ca™h- olic Church was yesterday, at 5:40 p. m., the scene of a pretty marriage, the parties being Miss Fanrtie J. Gardner, daughter of Mr. Thos. Gardner of Derwood, and Mr. James McDaniel of Baltimore. The mar- riage ceremony of the church was perform- ed by the resident pastor, Rev. Father Rosensteel. The attendants were Miss Bes- sie Fletcher of Baltimore and Mr. Chas. D. Morgan of this town. At the conclusion of the marriage a reception was held, afier which the newly married couple took a train for their future home in Maltimore. Miss Fannie Williams is on a visit to her sister, Mrs. E. O. Harr, at Forest Glen. Messrs. George and W. W. Gloyd of Newport News visited their parents the past week. Dr. Haddox of Dawsonville is on a visit to his parents at Front Royal. ‘The revival in progress at the M. E. Church South continues with unabated in- terest, and several conversions are report- ed. Rev. E. H. Henry preaches nightly. Miss Mollie Hickman, daughter of Mr. J. P. Hickman, wedded Mr. Charles Hein at Dickerson on Wednesday evening. Mr. Lee M. Lipscomb and family are just home from a visit to Mrs. Lipscomb’s pa- rents in Georgia. . There was a large attendance at the wedding at Epworth Methodist Episcopal Chureh on Tuesday evening. Exquisite floral decorations had been arranged about the altar. The contracting parties were Miss Fannie E. Grimes, youngest daughter of Mrs. Lucy Grimes, and Mr. W. Clarence Duvall, son of Mayor €. F. Duvall. As the hour for the ceremony arrived they en- tered the church to the strains of the wed- ding march, rendered by Miss Minnie Smith of Oakland, accompanied by Misses E. Jennie Waters and M. Willie Coomes, bridesmaids; Messrs. Daniel Grimes, brother of the bride, and C. Scott Duvall, brother of the groom, ushers, and E Martin and Vinnie Andrews, flower girls. Rev. Rob- ert M. Moore, assisted by Rev. Wm. C. Brian, read the wedding service, the con- tracting parties and the ministers standing immediately under a handsome wedding bell of evergreen and crysanthemums, The bride was attired in a gown of white silk. The local lodge of Good Templars was present in a body to witness the marriage, both of the parties being prominent mem- bers of that order. After the church serv- fee Mr. and Mrs. Duvall were driven to their new home on Diamond avenue and received many of their friends, the enjoy- ment of whom was largely enhanced by the tendering of an old-time serenade by the young men of the town. Upom the ap- pearance of the newly married couple for congratulations the party dispersed, hav- ing greatly enjoyed themselves and ac- ceptably entertained all present at the re- ception.
