The health of Anacostia will, how- ever, be looked after by Mr. George A. Howe, who will investigate all cases re- quiring the report of the inspector. eee HYATTSVILLE. Mr. J. H. Ralston has had a tilt with Gov. Brown in regard te the imprisonment of the Coxey men in the house of correction. Mr. Ralston, in a recent letter to the gov- ernor, called his attention to an agreement to the effect that all the Coxey men should be released, and clatmed that O'Neill, Horst and Hartman had been made to serve out their full terms in violation of the agree- ment, and that the latter, for want of Proper medical treatment, has gone blind. He also made certain charges of cruelty inflicted upon the inmates of the house of correction by its officers, and asked for an explanation. The governor in a tart let- ter replied that such charges should be in- vestisated py the board of directors of the institution. Mr. Ralston declined to sub- mit the charges to the board, giving as his reasons for doing so, that members were every month the guests of the very men they would investigate, but offered to lay the charges before a board not gov- erned by personal or partisan feelings. The governor, so Mr. Ralston claims, then an- nounced his intention of ignoring the charges against the institution. It is stated that other charges beside those of cruelty to the inmates will be brought against the officers of the house of correction. a BRIGHTWOOD. Dr. Oliver P. Dutton of Washington was the leader of the weekly meeting at the Lang- don Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavor Thursday evening, the subject for discussion being, “How May We Preach Christ?” The society has elected the fol- lowing officers for the ensuing quarte: President, Harry A. Newman; vice pres! dent, Mrs. J. H. Platt; “secretary, Miss Leona Sherman; treasurer, Mrs. C.A-Baker. ‘At last night's meeting of Langdon Lodse of Good Templars visitors were present from DL. P. Holloway Lodge of Washington and Golden Chain Lodge of Hyattaviile. An interesting good of the order program was resented by Miss Hattie Harvey, consis ~ of readings, music, &c. An official visi- tation from Liberty Lodge of Washington was announced for Friday, November 16. A pleasant birthday party was given Tuesday evening by Miss Leona Sherman in honor of her friend, Mr. Frank Higdon, at the residence of E. P. Sherman, on Em- poria street. C. G. Frost, the builder, has taken out a permit for a frame cottage, to be built at once, on Emporia street, Avalon, just east of the railroad. ‘The democratic collapse of Tuesday caught some of Langdon’s residents in the wreck, several boxes of cigars, three new hats and some cash having changed hands on the result. Index Clerk Tompkins of the House of Representatives, who hails from Loulsi- ena, and who has a long lease on the ex- tensive garden farm of Samuel Coombs at this point, says he has not had the courage yet to look in the papers, having h enough to satisfy him that the news wo not prove consoling to his weary heart. But some Langdon people who are on the outside as a result of the change two years so are cruel enough to be happy now, and that’s what seems to make other people, unhappy. — KENSINGTON. Mr. Nathan Mannokee of Washington Is visiting at the home of his uncle, Mr. W. H. Mannakee. Miss Helen Bickford of Washington is the guest of her sister, Mrs. J. Howard Fish- back. Dr. H. B. Haddox of Dawsonville is the guest of Drs. J. L. and W. L. Lewis. Mr. Harry Mannakee has been spending a few days at Falls Church, Va. ‘The services which will be held tomorrow in the Warner Memorial Presbyterian Church are as follows: Sabbath schoul at 9:30 a.m., preaching at 11 a.m., by the pas- tor, Kev. James T. Marshall, and Christian Endeavor services at 7:30 p.m., which will be led by Mr. L. W. Maxson, president of the society, the subject being “How May We Preach Christ?” Mr. George F. Davis has gone to Nomint Creek, Va., for a visit. He will be joined by Mrs. Davis early next week. ‘The Library Association of the St. Paul's M. &. Church will meet on Wednesday even- ing next at the home of Mr. W. H. Wheat- ley. Mr. Paul Detrick of Nomin! Creek is mak- ing a two weeks’ visit to his former home here.
