ATHLETIC YOUNGSTERS IN TRAINING Promising Material Found in Abundance. cea . DESTINED TO BE FAMOUS eae meaies In addition to its “big” foot ball teams, such es Coluvsbia, Georgetown and Kendall Green, Washington has within its limits a number of elevens composed of ambitious and athletic youngsters, many of whom are destined to become famous on the gridiron field in days to come. These organizations, for the most part, are connected with the educational institutions of the city, and are prepared to engage in battle royal for the glocy of their respective schools, and the students who are entitled to wear their hair in chrysanthemum style tower like giants above the non-athletic members of the classes. What may be termed the junior teams have all been organized recently, but have begun active training, and a numver have diready participated in games. ‘‘ne Emer- son Iustituts, located on Lith t bet I and K streets nozthwest, will be well resented this fall. RAMIE AND ITS FUTURE, A Plant From Which May Spring a New and Great Industry. Pedestrians on F street have been inter- ested for some days past in a unique ex- hibit in a show window of “ramie” and goods made from the fiber of that plant. Little is known of ramie in this country, but it is beginning to be extensively used by manufacturers of cloth, and there is a decided tendency among certain classes of capitalists to establish a purely American industry through the encouragement of the growing of the ramie plant by farmers, and its preparation into threads or cloth. Mr. S. H. Slaught of California has recentiy come to this city, having been urged by cer- tain interests to erect a ramie factory at Alexandria, to be operated In connection with a college where a general education in this industry could be given and apprentices trained thoroughly in the manutacture cf ramie. He is decidedly enthusiastic on the subject of the development of the ramie industry and predicts that when the won- derful qualities of the fiber and the ease of its growth are thoroushly understood tt will in a large measure cisplace vast im- portations of silk and wool, and should make inroads on the output of cotton and wheat, thus increasing the price of that raised. Ramie is now grown extensively in China, Japan and India, Mexico, Hawaii, Samoa, the West Indies and South America. In the United States it has also been cuitivated in small quantities in the gulf rtates and Cali- fornia. The main supply comes now from China, where for many years it has been used either singly in the preparation of fabrics or as an adulteration of silk goods. The fiber is remarkably strong and svs- ceptible of being woven into almost any qvality cf fabric, fron{ the coarsest goods to the finest textures, the latter of which rival silks in delicacy. It can also be dyed in any color. One great advantage claimed for the ramie plant is that it gives several crops a year, often producing as many as four, and, being perennial, does not require re-rooting for sometimes as long as twenty years. It is thus a most economical occupant of the soil, and Mr. Slaught contends that it can be profitably cultivated when once the farmers have come to know how to handle it and when the methods for its preparation have been improved in the point of econo- my. One great disadvantage so far has been the difficulty in securing ways for cleaning and ungumming the fiber in such a way as to compete with the exceed- ingly cheap labor of China, where this pro- cess is all conducted by hand. The China- man produges only one or two pounds of fiber per day, worth, perhaps, 10 cents. Mr. Slaught claims many advantages for the ramie fiber over the flax and hemp, and also a capacity to rival the best cocoon silk. He believes that in the near future the cap- italists of the country will realize the won- derful opportunities here given, not only for a successful competition with the Chi- nese importation, but for the establishment of an industry that will become one of the leading sources of revenue of the United States. ‘The uses of ramie, he says, are so varied, its fabrics so universal in character, that in a few years, with factories in good working order and the farmers supplying the stock regularly, ramle goods will be used by every class of people in this coun- try. Meanwhile, he contends there must be a single or divided process of Gemonstra- tion, In which the government should aid. DAUGHTERS OF THE KING. Annual Convention Begun Yesterd: at Baltimore. ‘The Daughters of the King,an order in the Protestant Episcopal Church, having for its object work among women, began its sec- ond annual cenvention yesterday in Balti- more. Over sixty delegates and a number of visitors were in attendance. ‘The opening service was held at 11 o'clock at St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, St. Paul and 20th streets. Rt. Rev. Leighton Coleman, bishop of Delaware, administered holy communion. Rev. Dr. E. A. Bradley of New York made an address. Rey. C. Ernest Smith, rector of St. Michael's, welcomed the delegates to the church. Rey. D. P. Allison assisted in the services. The annual report of the council of the erder showed 103 new chapters enrolled. Two eld ones have been dropped and four have surrendered their charters. Canada and Hayti have been added to the territory covered by the organization. The order now has chapters in nearly every United States diocese and many chap- ters in Canada. ‘The delegates from the District of Colum- bia are: Miss Victorine Koones, Mrs. C. B. Stephens, Mrs. Lilfian K. Roome, Mrs. A. Babcock, Miss Roberta Van Horn, Wash- Mrs. Sarah Smith, Mrs. Mary E. port, Anacostia. After reports had been made from indi: vidual chapters “The Rule of Prayer,” a paper by Miss C. Burress of Atlanta, Ga., vas read by Mrs. S. C. Spilman of Balti- more. Miss M. D. Ryerson of New York read a paper on “The Rule of Service.” Bishop C, C. Penick visited the convention at the afternoon session and called its at- tention to the wide field of work among colored people. At night a public meeting was held at St. Michael and All Angels’ Church. These pepers were read: “To What Use Have We Put Our T: ents?” Miss F. C, Baylor, Winchester, Va. “Temptaticns of Our Life," Miss Julia P. Moran, New York. “Helps of Our Life,” Mrs. Charles E. Wcodeock, Ansonia, Conn. ‘The delegates are entertained by the chap- (crs comprised in the Maryland council of the order, which includes Maryland and the District of Columbia. ——- 0+ —____ SECRETARY LAMONT REGISTERED. He Will Probably Vote the Straight Democratic Ticket. Secretary Lamont has returned to the city from a brief visit to his in- valid mother at McGrawville, N. Y. She is slightly improved, and is said to be out of immediate danger. In passing through New Yerk city, Saturday afternoon, on his way to McGrawville, cretary Lamont visited the registration office and gave in his name as a bona fide resident of that city. He named the Victoria Hotei as his plac2 of abode. He has therefore protec ed his rights as a citizen, and will un- doubtedly cast his vote for the straight state democratic ticket next Tuesday, Hill and all. His action with regard to the municipel ticket is not so certain, but the presumption 1s strong that he will vote for the Grant ticket. She May Christen It. Mrs. Cleveland has been invited to chris- + ten the new passenger steamship St. Louis vf the American Transatlantic line, which vessel is now receiving its finishing touches at Cramps’ shipyard near Philadelphia, It 1s expected that the vessel will be launched on the 9th proximo. Great preparations are being made for the occasion, and a large party from this city will attend.
