The new route through this village of the proposed electric railway between Baltimore and Washington was the cause of a vigor- ous kick on the part of a number of citizens of this village last evening. Mr. Chas. B. Calvert, one of the directors of the pro- pored railway, and Engineer Hall, under whose supervision the recent survey was made, met the commissioners and a number of property holders at Justice Carr's office last night to get their approval of the new route. This route enters Hyattsville at Olive avenue, goes down that avenue across Spencer street and Johnson avenue, thence through the properties of Messrs Schoepf and Ralston. The company sub- mitted the proposed route to the meeting of commissioners and citizens, with the result that the company would have to enter upon another survey more suitable to the peo- rle's wishes or leave Hyattsville without an electric railway. The chief objection to the new route was found in the fact that the ecmpany desired to appropriate Olive ave- hue to the exclusive use of the railway, ex- cavating said avenue to a depth of 19’ feet nd practically closing Marion street. This oute will also necessitate the bridging of Spencer street and Johnson avenue, and, in udition to this objection, it will pass with- in twenty feet of the public school house, rendering the School children le to in- jury. Property owners on Olive street raised the objection that the earth taken trem the excavations and banked up on either side would probably destroy the value of the property. At this meeting the com- missioners appeared to favor the proposed route, and evidently believing that their views would not meet with the approval of the citizens present, adjourned to hold an executive session at the residence of Dr. Wells. Meanwhile the Village Improvement Association took up the question, and after some discussion passed a resolution, offered by Mr. Tierney, providing that the associa- tion is opposed to the surrender of any of the streets of the town for railroad pur- pees, except upon payment yearly to the town of the annual value of the privileges Sranted the railroad. Another resolution, cffered by Mr. Campbell, was also passed, providing “That the association, only looking to the welfare of the village, solemnly and earnestly puts Itself upon record as unalter- ably opposed to the proposed route of elec- tric cars through the village, for the reason that {t fs believed said proposed route will be decidedly injurious to the property abutting the route; a continuing danger to the people who are compelled to cross it; a standing danger to the children and a yearly drain on the revenues of the village to keep the approaches to and from it in repairs.” A committee, consisting of Messrs. Tier- ney, Campbeli, Emmons, Richardson and Carr, wag appointed to wait upon the com- reissioners immediately and present the two resolutions to them, and also protest against the proposed route. The committee vas admitted to the executive session of the commisstoners. Mr. Campbell was the the spokesman, and made a brief speech objecting to th? route. The committee then withdrew, without receiving much satisfac- tion at the time, but later the commission- ers declined to give the railroad company the proposed new route at present. At the meeting of the Village’ Improve- tment Association, held last night, Meese. R. C. Langley, Geo. Markward, E. A. Fuller and Dr. A. H. Wells were elected members. Mr. Emmons reported that is would require from $25 to $30 to make the necessary im- one. on Wing Rest avenue, in the shape of gravcling, rounding and grading the street. The committee, of which he was @ member, was authorized to lay the mat- ter before the town commissioners. — = INDIGESTION If your dinner distresses you, try it. It aids digestioa. e GOOD NEWS!
