10 THE EVENING STAR, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1894-TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA, ‘The republicans of Oxen Hill district turned out in force last evening at the pre- Nminary meeting for organization. Grange Hall at Oxen Hill was filied with advocates of protection. John T. Fisher called the Gathering to order, and agked for nomina- tions for president. Reuben Meitzler was chosen for that office, and Charles F. Bate- man elected secretary. A book was opened for the enrollment of members, and about weventy-five persons signed their names. ‘The republican outlook in this district is very bright, and even the democrats say it will be closer than for years. From now until the night before election the republicans will mest at Oxford Hall each Monday night. Speakers will be present, furnished by the republican congressional committee, and a rousing meeting held each week. The registration of voters shows a republican gain of about twenty-five over the last registration, and every effort ts being made to increase the gain. Ex-State Senator Coffin’s letter pledging his support for a bridge at Giesboro’ has had a telling effect and the farmers say he is the man they want. The democrats have also organized. Mr. H. L. The case of Delaney against Smallwood in the Police Court yesterday resulted in a dismissal of the prisoner. There was a one-sided stone battle on a farm near Good Hope Hill yesterday after- noon. John Fisher,.an old colored man, having incurred the enmity of Wm. Miller, his eighteen-year-oll nephew, has since b=ea careful of exposing himself to the on- slaughts of the youth, but yesterday while at work on his farm was suddenly set upon and became the target for numerous large and small stones. Une large one struck Fisher in the head, and he fell to the ground unconscious. Miller's aunt rushed from the house, and in defense of her spouse drove the boy away and managed to drag her husband into the house. Later in the even- ing she locked him in, and started for Ana- costia for a warrant for Miller. She told her story to Justice Carroll Smith, who issued the warrant, and this morning the police were after Miller. The Acme Club, the result of some youth- ful efforts, will hold a social soon. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Phillip Johnson, the colored boy who @rove the wagor which ran into an Ana- cestia car on Saturday, and his arrest is expected today. At last Anacostia haw been treated to a fall cleaning at the hands of the sewer de- partment workmen. Yesterday there were three carts at work in Anacostia, and one ‘wagon carrying two or three long lines of hose. A gang of men went to work early fm the morning, and the sewer traps all over Anacostia were opened and cleaned. The workmen did not stop at removing the unhealthy accumulation of dirt, but, attach- ing the hose to the nearest water plug, washed out the sewer, flooded the streets, and sent a flow of clear water coursing through the drains. This will greatly tm- Prove the healtiful condition of the com- munity, and is a welcome improvement. ——>—_ BROOKLAND. Rev. and Mrs. Charles W. Camp and Miss May L. Camp of New York city and Rev. The trouble over the paving of Washing- ton avenue broke out fresh last night at the meeting of the city council, when Mr. J. T. Cull made additional charges against the contractors and a part of the city council, including the engineer in charge of the work. He charged that there had been vio- lations of the contract, and that the engin- eer had approved a part of the work con- trary to the orders of the city council, and that the mayor was responsible for the at- tempt made to override the specifications. The debate grew very acrimonious, and the lie was freely given, with threats to siap the faces of seme of the persons present. Mutual friends intervened, and while no violence was again attempted, a very dis- sraceful wrangle continued. A resolution was finally offered and adopted canceling the contract of Breen and Feeley, and dis- charging B. J. Dashiell as engineer. This proceeding will retard if it does not entirely prevent the improvement of other streets, and is quite a setback to our thriving town. ‘There will be another meeting of the coun- cil on Thursday night, when further action will be taken, and it is hoped that the mat- ter will be straightened out to the satisfac- tion of all concerned. Last Saturday night the republicans open- ed the campaign in this county by a large meeting at Flester's Hall.
