The members of the Dramatic and Liter- ary Club are preparing an entertainzoeut, to be given at an early date. Wood and the Misses Clagett of Washington visited friends at Oxen Hill yesterday. ‘There was an accident to one of the cars = of the Anacostia and Potomac railway Saturday which very near proved fatal. Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Fowler have issued cards for the marriage of their sister, Miss Mary Heister Beaton, to Mr. Frank Miner Thomas of Los Angeles, Cal., to take place Wednesday, October 10, at 4:80 o'clock, at Valley Lawn, Kensington. Rev. R. M. Moore, pastor of the Methgdist Church, will perform the ceremony. The regular monthly meetings of the Woman's Home Missionary and Ladies’ Ald Societies will be held on Wednesday, begizning at 11 o'clock a.m., at the home of Rev. and Mrs. R. M. Moore. Dr. and Mrs. John L. Lewis have gone for @ ten days’ visit to Essex county, Virginia. Mr. William Morey, jr., and family have moved into their new house on Washing- ton street. The revival services which have been go- ing on in the Methodist Church will be con- tinued through this week. The grading on the Kensington and Chevy Chase electric road has been completed as far “Highlands,” the home of Mr. Alfred Ray, which is about four-fifths of the distance. The contractors expect to finish the grading the last of this week. Union services were held last evening in the Methodist Church, Rev. J. T. Mar- shall, pastor of the Warner Memorial Chureh, occupying the pulpit. The Ep- worth League meeting was led by H. K. Simpson of the Presbyterian Church. —_——. BROOKLAND. between 6th and 7th streets one of the large wagons belonging to a merchant ou that street pulled out from the sidewalk. Its driver was a young colored boy, and the tongue of the wagon was long and terminat- din a sharp hock. Regardless of the pass- ing car the driver started his horses and the tongue of the wagon pushed its way imto the side of the car. It penetrated the outside wall, and, just as a lady passenger rolied from her seat, entered the car and stopped within a few inches of another fer on the opposite side of the car. parsenger was Police Officer W. T. Anderson of Anacostia, and as soon as the two vehicles had been disengaged he took steps to secure the arrest of the wagon driver for reckless driving. His name is Philip Johnson. Fortunately no one was hurt, and Driver Cook of the car jumped the track and went back lo the stables. ‘The police have been reienticss in their efforts to break up gunning and gaming on Sunday There-were no offenders to be found en the river yesterday, but there were, nevertheless, two arrests made. There is a section in the law against gaming on Sunday, which prohibits the carrying of firearms on that day. Yesterday Joseph C. Eller and James Hamilton, both of the city, were passing through Anacostia en route to friends in the county, where they ex- pected to engage in a day’s sport. The Police quickly took them to the station, and today they will answer to the charge in the Police Court. There was another row in Upper Hills- dale Saturday evening. Shadrack Delaney, colored, is the father-in-law of a young colored man named Thomas Smaliwood. The two have not been on the best of terms for some time, and their estrangement terminated Saturday evening in a fight, which resulted in the old man having his face badly cut and a wound inflicted with @ stone over the left eye. It is alleged he entered the house for his gun, which, when fired, failed to respond, owing toa defective cap. Smaliwood then went to the office of George Acmstrong, the former justice of the peace, and endeavored to secure a war- rant for the old man, but, failing, returned e. Meantime Delaney meeting the real Justice was given a warrant upon his state- ment of the facts, and this morning Small- ‘wood appeared in the Police Court to answer to a charge of assault. A number of thefts are reported to have taken piace at a new building being con- structed on the Naylor road. The robberies Were reported to the police by Thomas H. Myers, the builder. ¢ police are looking for Minnie Will- jams, a fourteen-year-olt colored girl, re- ported by her father, John Williams of Garfield, to have left home about ten days ago. and believed to be residing in Hillsdale. The republicans of Oxen Hill district will meet this afternoon at 5 o'clock, at Oxford Hall, and organize for the coming cam- Paign. James Halley is the projector of the Movement. Speakers will be present and work outlined for that district. ‘There was an important meeting of the Citizens’ Association of Anacostia Friday night. Vice President Carroll W. Smith oc- eupied the chair. A report was made by the committee of one on the Harrison street sewer. The committeeman detailed the ex- perience of the health inspector in the sewer, and reported that Inspector Beau- mont had made a strong and urgent report op its condition. The report was supple- mented with the recommendations that the old sewer running under the station house be abandoned, and that a new sewer be con- structed from Harrison and Fillmore streets along Harrison street, a distance of one Square, to Monroe street, where a connec- tion should be made to carry the flow on to the river. In lieu of this he recommend- ed that the various street sewers of Ana- costia run Into one general and main sewer with a pipe running out into the river, and that at the river bank there be constructed @ pumping station, with a cess pool, and that twice a day the contents of the pool be pumped off, and thus be carried off by the tide. Tue election of president was de- ferred, and Vice President Carroll W. Smith succeeded himself. Herbert F. Al- len was chosen secretary, Mr. A. B. Frisbie, assistant secretary, and Mr. J. Edwin Min- nix, treasurer. Crowe preached a forcible and earnest ser- mon to the congregation of St. Clement’ Mission, and announced that the petition to retain him as rector of Brookland par- ish had received favorable action, and he expected to remain in this field of labor. The B. Y. P. U. had the largest audience of the season at their mecting, which was very ably led by Mr. George Kane, the sub- ject being “The Duty and Rewards of Church Going.” References and remarks were made by John Wignall, Miss Knapp West, Lucy, Bessie and Anna Lynch, C. B. Perry, Mrs. West, Mr. Many and Mr. West. ‘The meeting next week will be led by Mr. Fenwick of the E Street Baptist Church. Brazil and Argentine Dispute. President Cleveland is expected to give bis decision as arbitrator of the important boundary dispute between Brazil and Ar- gentine Republic soon after his return from Buzzard’s Bay. Baron Rio-Branco, special envoy from Brazil, accompanied by a large suite, is now here awaiting a decision. The case has been in Mr. Cleveland’s hands for eight’ months, and as the treaty of arbi- tration provides that the decision must be made within a year, it is being looked for almost any day. The time for the decision expires February 10 next, but as Mr. Cleve- land will be busy with Congress and public affairs soon after his return, he is expected to dispose of the arbitration question be- fore taking up domestic affairs.
