A stay of sufficient length to permit a hasty examination of the mansion and grounds was made, and then ensued the return trip and more refreshments—the principal fea- tures of the latter being ee — and sandwiches. On the up-trip the had very litUle opportunity to rest; it played almost ccntinuousty. While some of the most lively selections were being rendered a few of the veterans made evident their youthfulness by exhibitions of agility hard- ly to have been expected; some of the danc- ing was remarkably clever. The Macales- ters wharf was reached by 6:30 o'clock, and then most of the crowd moved homeward as rapidly as possible to prepare for the banquet; not, however, before the Ancients and Honorables had given expression to their gratitude for a most enjoyable enter- tainment. The executive committee in charge of the excursion—one of the most competent com- mittees ever organized—was composed of Maj. E. H. Neumeyer, chairman; Capt. M. J. Goddard, Capt. Geerge Breitharia, Capt. A, W. Kelley and Lieut. C, G. Sloan, The reception committee—the majority of the members of which were present on the excursion—consisted of Capt. John 8. Mil- ler, T. The artillery showed their appreciation of the efforts for their entertainment during their stay in Washington by giving a ban- quet Jast evening at the Arlington, at which a number of prominent Washington gentle- men were the guests of honor. It was one of the mcst elaborate affairs of the sort seen in this city for many a day, and all the arrangements for the evening were plarned on a scale commensurate with the wealth and social position of this famous Beston organization. The big banquet hall of the hotel was used, and it took nine long tables to seat all those who were ears for, including the members of the A. H. A. and their guests, there were upwards of 330 who went through with the long and elegant menu. The room was handsomely decorated for the occasion, and this, with the gorgeous uniforms, for a majority of the guests were military men, also made a scene of the greatest brilliancy. Eight of the tables were arranged in parallel lines with one running at right atgles, so that the general effect was not unlike a grid iron, an ar- rangement which brings all the guests in neighborly proximity, and makes general conversation as well as formal speaking Possible gnd pleasant. The Salem Cadet Band, which accompanied the artillery from Boston, rendered appropriate music through- out the evening. At the close of the ban- quet souvenir menu cards and handsome r cases, commemmorative of the visit the ancient and honorable artillery to | te were presented to each of the uests, The Guests. Col. Sidney M. Hedges, captain of the ar- tillery, sat at the center of the long table, almost hidden from view by an immense vase of magnificent American Beauty roses. Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Charles S. Hamlin, ex-Gov. Brackett of Massachu- setts and Col. W. G. Moore of this city sat at his immediate right hand, and on “~ left were Adjutant General Ruggles, U. = grees Lego | — secretary ~ 5 alge, ani qi ay mm = the company. sige cy mong those who were present were Gen. McIntire, The Speechea, At the conclusion of the banquet proper speechmaking was the order of the day, or rather night, and Col. Hedges, in the uni- form of his rank, and wearing the ancient gorget which indicated the rank of com- manders of other days, welcomed the guests of the company to its hospitable board. He recounted the history of the organization, mentioning the fact that the charter was received from Gov. John Winthrop, and that a lineal descendant of that age ge in the permen of Robert C. Winthrop, is today a member of the company. He then introduced the toastmaster of the evening, Capt. E. E, Wadsworth, who an- nounced as the first toast, “The President of the United States.” A letter of regret from the President was read and the senti- ments contained therein were heartily ee Assistant Secretary Hamlin of the dent ana bade the guests from Boston w come to Washington on behalf of the fed- eral government. Other toasts of the evening, and those who responded to them, were as follows: “The City cf Washington,” Mr. Simon Wolf; “The Commonwealth o! goa| setts. After the toasts Chaplain Berle intro- duced a resolution tendering to the vener-. able Robert C. Winthrop the company’s heartlest good wishes for his heaith and welfare. The resolution was adopted by acclama- tion, and the banquet was at an end. Of This Morning. The Boston artillerymen returned to their homes this morning full of the kindest re- membrances of the hospitality with which they had been entertained during their stay in this city. Considering the lateness of the hour at which the banquet closed this morning, and “other things,” the march along the evenue was a very cred- {table display from a military standpoint. They said that if they had only known be- fore they left Boston what a good time they were going to have in this city they would have brought their trunks aud come prepared to stay for a much longer time.
