Congressman Willam L, Wilson, chair- man of the ways and means committee of the House of Representatives, was given a dinner by the chamber of commerce of London last night at the Hotel Metropole. About seventy guests were present, in- cluding Mr. Morton, Secretary of Agricul- ture of the United States, and his two sons, Paul and Joy; Congressman Isador Straus of New York; Sir Courtney E. Boyle, K. C. B., secretary of the board of trade, and a number of leading men in trade and com- merce. The American ambassador, Thomas F. Bayard, aad James R. Roosevelt, secretary of the United States embassy, sent regrets. Prof. Wilson’s speech was the event of the evening. After acknowledging the honor conferred upon him, and reciting the events or the long struggle to overthrow protection, Mr. Wilson said: “All the people saw that our system was generating a brood of monopdlists so powerful as to defy the law, and which used part of the wealth they drew from sharing in the power of taxation to increase their privileges, de- bauch elections and corrupt legislation. I am quite sure that our protective policy has already served to promote the trade of other natioas, and, if continued, it would still further promote such trade, and pre- eminently your own. “So, standing before you, a representa- tive of those who are trying for a freer commercial policy for the United States, I fear I cannot ask you to rejoice at its adoption, except as you may prefer right Principles to selfish advantage. “Protection has seen our voluntary with- drawal from the seas and from the neutral markets. Our protectionists have be2n building defenses to keep you and other nations from competing with us in our home markets. The tariff reformers are breaking down these fences. Let us com- pete in all the markets of the world. Not only is our production of cotton and food products growing more rapidly than our consumption, but we have today a manu- facturing plant, which, urged to its full capacity, can jn six months fully meet our demands for a year.” Replying to the toast to the chamber of commerce of the United States, Congress- man Isador Straus of New York deplored the fact that the tariff was ever made a party question in the United States, and he asserted that the compliment paid to Mr. Wilson by the dinner tendered him by the London chamber of commerce will be con- torted by the “protectionist press” into * mark of the Engtish sense of obligation Mr. Wilson's efforts in England’s behalf. The Congressman from New York also referred to the American railroad securi- ties question, asserting that many thought- ful men in the United States were persist- ent in seeking means to check “kite flying” and the vicious financing of railroads. Great Britain, he added, could rely on this being done, for Americans, as a whole, were of a high moral standard, and the question would never be finally settled until it was settled right. —_———§_<ae_. Prof. Shortlidge Acquitted. The remarkable trial of Prof. Swithin C. Shortlidge for the killing of his wife came to an end at Media, Pa., last evening at 6 o'clock with a most extraordinary and touching scene. As was expected from the start, the verdict was acquittal because of Insanity. Although adjudged insane by the jury's verdict, the wretched man had been freed from the charge of murder, and his friends were satisfied. The jury was out about an hour and a half, and Prof. Short- lidge and his brothers did not leave the court rocm. ————+0e-.
