Three Atrocious Woman Cause a Sensation. A terrible double tragedy of the “Jack- the-Ripper” class {s reported from Amras, not far from Innsprucke capital of the Aus- trian Tyrol. On Friday last a young and pretty wait- ress of Amras went away from her em- ployer’s residence in order to witness a re- gious procession near that place. On her return home the girl was murdered, and the only clue found up to the present of her assassin is a rezor-edged knife which was picked up near her body. The murder caused a great sensation in the neighbor- Close to the spot where the waitress was killed the body of another woman, naked and slashed with a knife in the regular Jack-the-Ripper fashion, was found today. In addition, another woman belonging to the same neighborhood is missing. Natur- ally, the whole of the Amras district, as well as all the neighboring towns, are in a state of the greatest excitement. A strong detachment of gendarmes and two compa- nies of imperial riflemen are scouring the country «round Amras, but all efforts to ar- rest the murderer have proved unsuccessful. ——_-coo______ Finished the Story for Him. From the Buffalo Express, The boarders were sitting around the par- lor. The landlady had just served one of her famous 6 o'clock dinners (35 cents apiece, or a quarter if you buy ten tickets at a time), and the partakers needed rest as much as anything, unless it was pepsin. The sporty young man, who had been there but a week, was telling a story about a friend of his who was in the theatrical business, advance agent, or something 0} the kind. “It was this way,” said the sporty boarder, “Jack always was quite a hand to play the horses, and that day he was particularly lucky. He went out to the track with a $100 bill. He saw the card was an easy one, and he resolved to plug it. He icked a 6 to 1 shot in the first race, and it won. Then he went on, playing every race, and when the sport was over he had won Just $15,000."" The soubrette opened her eyes and whistled. The ministerial-looking man who sat over in the corner, said: “Why don't you go on and finish the story?” “Finish the story?’ asked the sporty boarder in surprise. “Why, what more is there to tell? What more is there to it?” “Pshaw,” said the ministerial-looking man, “you know as well as I do that your friend hurried back to town and won $),000 more before dark playing croquet.” oe Rochester's Fire Dog. From the Rochester Herald. Rover is the name of a white-and-black spaniel that for the past month has follow- ed Truck 1 of Front street to all fires where the services of the company were needed. Truck 1 only responds to calls in the sec- tions of the city where there are high build- ings, but there have been a sufficient num- ber of calls to break Rover in to his new duties. It is a strange story that the firemen tell of how the dog happened to take up with their manner of life.. It was in the early part of August, they say, that when gommge at full speed to a fire on the West Side the animal was first seen following the ap- paratus and barking as if he thought his efforts would spur the four grays on to a greater speed. The dog was allowed to fol- low the truck back to the house, where he has since remained. He is a great pet of the fire laddies, who named him Rover, after the old hand engine Red Rover. Rover sleeps in the stable with the horses, ana during the night if a call comes he will bark and run about, impatient for the fire- men to leave the building. The men say that when their pet gets used to a fireman's life he will be more calm when an alarm is sounded. Murders ————- ee. The use of voting machines is extend- ing in this state.
