Fifteen thousand people yelled themselves hoarse at Galesburg, Ill., yesterday after- noon when the great trotting queen Alix beat Nancy Hanks’ world’s record by com- ing under the wire in 2.03, 3-4. McDowell drove her. The day was an ideal one and the track was in good condition. The start was made in splendid style, Alix coming as regularly and steadily as clockwork. When she approached the wire for the start she seemed to be going a little slow, but she soon increased her speed. When the quarter was reached there was @ general exclamation: “Thirty and a half; she will beat it.” From that to the halt she seemed to fly, making it in 1.01 3-4. The third quarter she reased her pace a trifle, making it in 1.32 3-4. The tist few rods she scemed to increase her marvelous speed, and as she darted under the wire the shout went up from the thousands: “She's dere it! She's done it!” ‘The first quarter was made in .30 1-2, the half in 1.01 3-4, the third quarter in 1.32 3-4 and the mile in 2.03 8-4. Driver McDowell said: ‘It was a remark- able mile. She did not seem worried a bit by the effort, but came out as fresh as she went in. Her action was perfect. In the whole distance I never spoke to her or raised the whip; it was not necessary. When I r2ached the half-mile pole I knew that she would break the record. Alix’s first race was at Beatrice, Neb., in June, 1890, when a two-year-old. Last year she made a record of 2.07 . The first trotting she did this year was in an exhi- bition at Council Bluffs, where she went a mile in 2.11 1-2. She recently went in 2+ ‘The feature at the fair of the Grange Camp Association of Northern Virginia yesterday on Alexander Island was a con- test open to all volunteer fire engine com- panies. Two prizes were offered, $100 and $50, cespectiveiy. The requirements pro- vided that the engines should get up steam from cold water, of which there had to be at least thirteen gallons in the boiler at the time the fire was lighted, and throw a stream through 150 feet of hose, at least 150 feet from the nozzle. The engine doing this In the quickest time would receive the first prize, and the second best the second prize. But two companies entered the contest, the Columbia and Hydraulion, both of Alexandria. The engine of each is a third- class Amoskeag. The Columbia engine had won prizes at Frederick, Md, and at Hagerstown, while the Hydraulion had rever before entered a contest. The Co- lumbia engine was the first to make the attempt, and it raised steam and threw a stream of water the required distance in six minutes and five seconds. After this exhibition the Hydraulion boys made no attempt to beat their rivals. Messrs. Belt, Branstein and Wallach acted as judges of the contest.
