A. R., who will hold their annual encampment there, beginning Sep- tember 10. Badges will be distributed made from one of the guns which the patriotic citizens of Pittsburg refused to allow to be removed from the arsenal to the south in 1861. The veterans will be quartered in school houses, public buildings and with private families. The Naval Veterans will partly be housed on steamboats along the Monongahela wharf. Daniel Ashworth of Pittsburg will be admiral of the fleet, The fleet will be divided into four squadrons, and maritime regulations will be observed, B. 8. On Tuesday the parade of the Grand Army will take place over the most prom- inent thoroughfares of the two cities. There will be some fine illuminations. Stearns has been ordered from the Charleston to the Philadelphia, and then to the Adama. Lieut. W. P. Day, from the Franklin to the Machias. Passed As- sistant Surgeon I, W. Kite, to hold himself in readin for orders to the Constella- tion. Passed Assistant Surgeon P. B. Daly, Chief Engineer B, C. Gowing and Assist- ant Paymaster W. L, Wilson, to the Ma- chias. Commander C. §. Houston, from the Dale to command the Machias, Ensign L. H. Chandler, from the coast survey to the Naval Academy, ness of the army to their crops, few of the tramp-thieves were caught. During their stay here a great amount of extra police work had to be done, and thus the citizens were deprived of the services of the police. When starvation faced those in camp in Maryland and Virginia, especially in the Rosslyn camp, the men were sent into the city to beg for food for the army, But the police put their foot down ye foe re of the program, and arrests aoe leaders had deserted when they were broW@ht Tato court “he Congressmen and array of lawyers who had looked after the case of the leaders when they were arrested did not appear, and the half-starved “soldiers” of the the “army of peace” had to fight their own carmen thi it down, thi en they were sent 8 prosecut- ing attorney, Mr. Pugh, treating them as he does any other common vagrants. With many of these poor men it was their first prison experience, while others appeared and tcok their sentences with the grace of old-timers. A sentence of a few days in the workhouse to some of them was really @ punishment, but the sentence was worse than the actual service. Longing for Home. The work that is done by the wearers of the check suits would never require much exertion, much less give one an appetite, and, then, the “soldiers” were always sure of their next meal. “Meal” is what the officials call what is served two or three times a day, and to the Coxeyites they were probably “banguets.” Real meat and bread, and not the leavings ‘of other people’s tables, were to them some- thing extra, Although they enjoyed what was set before them and relished it, there was a longing for home, and most of those who had served time made a start when re- leased to tramp home. Besides the expense of keeping them in the workhouse, the Dis- trict had to give many of them hospital treatment, and now the contingent or emer- comm g fund is being taxed to send them homé, Gov. Brown's raid on the Coxey camp at Highlands was the worst setback received by the unwelcome visitors. The raid in itself amounted to but lite, for the Coxey- ites cared nothing about a visit to a coun- try magistrate’s office, nor did a ninety days’ sentence affect them very much. Those who had been in the workhouse here have told their comrades of their treatment, and consequently those who had not been given a dose of the prison imagined that the Maryland house of correction at Jes- sup’s Cut was no worse than Intendant Stoutenburgh’s boarding house. But in this they were mistaken, for not only was there a difference, but the difference was so Ree that some of them felt almost Uke inting. A Place They Didn't Like. A lock in the building revealed a party of prisoners at work in penitentiary style, while on the outside in the field others were tilling the soll. The arrival of so many prisoners in one batch id not even attract them. They know nothing other than at- tention to duty, s0 rigid is the discipline of the place. Theti, too, the bath was not the oniy' routine through which they had to go, for there was the much-dreaded barber shop, and even Christopher Columbus Jones could not save his whiskers, the growth of several years, Information of the treatment of the pris- oners soon reached those who remained here and in Virginia, and for a few days the residents of Maryland enjoyed a freedom from the visits @¢ the rough-looking men which they had‘not enjoyed for several months. Another serious phase of the movement ts ne leading astray of so many young boys. ‘his has become @ serious question, When Eighteen Years in Prison for Shoot- ing Col. Parsons. aE ee eee in his seat, after the verdict, turned his wife. His sorrow ¢id not find in tears, for when he left the court room his eyes were Gry, and his step firm The grief-stricken wife's weeping inter, the jailer’s resikience, only a few feet from the court room, nervously —s father’s fate, heard the shrill sobs of mother, and, surmising the result, ru into the house, where she fell into @ paroxysm of grief. Mr. Crump made the usual motion to set aside the ne verdict, whith was overruled with- out being argued at a night session of the court. It was decided to pass sentence to- day. They ere not such men as are swayed by argu mert or sentiment. All of them were in favor of ex cept T, D. Kyle, who thought that’ the offense was manslaughter, and C. W. Those two would not yield, and in @ conference held during the recess the ver dict was practically agreed upon, The killing of which Goodman was cone vieted grew out of @ letter which Colonel Parsons wrote to the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Company, for which Goodman was conductor, accusing the latter of immorality and of huproper advances toward a woman who rode on his train, Goodman and Pare sons had werds over the matter, and after the latter had refused to make a retraction shot him.
