What the Corporations of New ork and This City Pay. A statement hes been prepared by Con- troller Fitch of New York city showing the amount paid by street railway companies to the city of New York since Issy. The con- troller states that there is no uniform rule regarding the amount the companies shall pay. Some companies, he states, are bound by stipulatins enteted into upon the grant- ing to them of additional privileges, while others are subject to the municipal ordi- nances providing for cur-iicense fees. The Teecntly incorporated companies come under the provisions of the general railroad law of the state. Of the twenty-three com- panies enufferated seven’ pay to the city *# per car per annum, and one company a 0 cor fee. Some of the companies are taxed on the basis of a certain percentage of the gross receipts, and in addition, in the case of six companies, my @ car fee. The percentage ranges from 3 to 6 per cent, | only one compmay, however, paying the Jatter perecntage. Seven of the companies bay 5 per cent, two 1 per cent, and four of the companies pay 8 per cent, and, as stated, six contribute in addition a tax on In this city, accorfing to a statement fur- rished by the tax assessor, the railrond com- panies contributed: to the revermuet of the city for the year ended June 30, IS%4, the amounts stated in the following table, | Givided under the hegds of peal estate tax and personal ta Personal tex Real Estate tas. ° ‘mpanies, ‘ashington and Georgetown and thi Metropolitan, the amount of the person tax contributed by these Toads. is mined on the basis of the rate of 31.40 per hundred on the assease? value of the capi- tal stock. AN the other roads with ene exception pay a personal tax Of 4 ‘per cent on the gross receipts, The Anacostia and Potomac railroad pays 2 per cent. As may be seen from the above table two of the | companies are put down as making no re- turns of @ personal tax The law also requires a tax of 3 per an- num_on each two-horse car and $$ on each one-horse car. It is stated that this tax has not been paid since 1876. The legality of this tax has been questioned. but a de- cision of the Supreme Court of the United States bas been rendered sustaining the tex and the claims against the companies are now .in the hands of the attorney of the District for collection, Admitted to Practice.
