The Area Swept Now and in 1892—The Appropriation for the Com- ing Year, Maj. Davis, superintendent of the street cleaning department, speaking to a repre- sentative of The Star today in reference to the work of machine sweeping now being done in comparison with what was dcne by his department when he took charge of it in March, 1892, gave some interesting fig- ures. “At that time,” he said, “twenty- five streets were being swept six times a Week, fifteen ‘three times, fifty-six twice end 179 oncs. During the fiscal year end- ing June 39, 1894, thirty-two streets were swept six times*a Week, sixty-nine three times, eighty-six twice and 1735 once. “During the year ending June 30, 1892, 184,842,598 sqtiire yards were swept, costing $64,694.20. During the year ending June 30, 1894, 248,004,445 square yards, costing $90,162.82, were swept. In. other words, al- though we swept 63,251,847 square yards more of street surface than were swept in 1891-92, the cost to the District was $4,531.38 less than that of 1892. “What the appropriation for my depart- ment will be for the year upon which we have just entered can only be conjectured. ‘The House bill carries $125,000, the same amount we had last year. ‘When it-reachtd the Senate the committee on appropria- ticns made ft $150,000,-but when the bill ame up for, age an amendment was ado; pot apart! $5,000" of that amount for spr) rigs abun ban drivetays, which left. $145,000 as the s1 oh deeignated for paying the expenses of the street sweeping department for the present year. ‘The bill is now in conference, where I, trust the $5,000 clause wili be’ eliminate The sprinkling may be necessary, but, its cost should not be taken out of the fund set aside for sprinkling, sweeping and.cleanirg the streets of Washington and Georgetown. If the amount’shall be made-£150,000, as It should be, it will warrant che schedul'ng of 175 sireets toe be swept twice a week instead of once. Better tina that, the following thoroughfares can be swept five times a week instead of three times, which will make them sbine « t ike a clean house floor compared) their present appearance: Connecticut’ avenue “from Li street north to Dupont Circle; K street north from ‘th street west to Washingtcn Circle; Massachxsatts..ayenue frum th street west to Dupont Circle; iith street west from B strest-aorth to end ef esphalt. Besides this the following streets, which have long deserved ach treatmens, can ve changed from twice to three times a week: Maryland avenue from fst street east to 15th street east; East Capitol street from lth street ‘east, to 11th river; Ast street east to street east from 1 Ca Pennsylvania avetite from to lita street east, and Sth street Co from Pernsylvania avenue to navy y “Or, by way of comparison, § 50,000 would erable the department to sweep in the neighborhood of 400,100), square yards during the present year 000,000 for the year just ¢ a spec’ vot unpleasant to contemplacs, as it would mean a very tauch eleaner city than we have ever had. “It shculd not have been expected of this department that it could have wrought any better results then {it did last year, when I was compelled, by reason of the tnacdequacy of the apprdpriation, to cut off end not sweep, on the average, 223,737 square yards of street surface every day thet had been scheduled to be swept, and also, from the same cause, when more than half of our paved strests were swept but once a week. When I tell you that those 223,737 square yards of themselves repre- sent an area equa! to that of all the paved streets running north and south in North- east and Scutheast Washington from New Jersey avenue to 1th street east, or that an area of streets equal to this combination of streets was unswept everydey during the past year simply because of the fafiure of Congress to make the necessary appropria- tion, you oan form an intelligent idea of how much more cleanly our streets would have looked had they been swept accord- ing to the schedvle. As it was, however, one-third more street surface was swept than ever befcre, and the most conclusive proof that the quality of the work done has at least never been excelled lies in the fact that but fifty-four complaints of dirty streets were received during the year Just closed, notwithstanding the season of cholera scare, last summer, Jn place of 161 the preceding yea — MANY OLD CASES. tol e Been Cleared From the Court Records. Under the new rules of ‘the District Su- preme Court, adopted last March, two cal- endars were provided for tha criminal branch of the court, a current caiendar and one to be known as the “laid away” calen- dar, The lattcr one was designed to con- tain ail cages.in which indictments had been returned at least eighteen months prior to the adoption and pr »mulgation of the new rules. The new rujes also previded that in all cases on the “laid away” calen- dar the defendants should be given at least ten days’ notice before trial. District Attorney Birney has begn busily engaged for the past several months in-removing, by the entering of rolle prescquis, all those cases in which, for one feason or anothe no conviction could be had, Yesterday af- ternoon, with the consent of Judge Hagne he nolie prossed the following cases: Thomas Cookley, indicted for assault with intent to kill in 1872; Benjamin B. Despite the vigor- ous efforts of the begging agents, who forage through the surrounding country, supplies reach the commissary in very Umited quantities, and nine-tenths of the men in camp are really on the verge of starvation. There are many desertions taking (Place every day, despite the claims of the “generals” and “colonels” that their men are sticking together. Fhe Virginia authoritics appear to have fergotten all etout their announced intentton of com- pelling the industrials to remove from Virginia soil. The crowd seems to be of thé unanimous opinion that it is better to stay at Rosslyn than to move elsewhere, and ff®m the sen- timent prevailing it will take 9 great deal of persuasion to remove it front its present abiding place. The commonweal camp near Highlands has been deserted by numbers of its former occupants gad. its, final break up at any time would not occasion much surprise. 5 FISTS AGAINST REVOLVERS. An Exciting Encounter Disturbs the Sabbath in Nearby Maryland. There wes a lively affray Sunday out on the River road in Montgomery county, Mad., about five miles from‘ Tenleytown: It ap- pears that a man who {s known as H. E. Smith, but who ts said‘to be a resident of Washington by the rame of Warren, had a misunderstanding with g resident of the county named M. F. Embry. © , Bel eompanied by enother man, went to’ Em- bry’s place on Sunday, and were ordered off. ‘Shey decamped, but sent Embry werd-shat. {f he would come down on the road they would beat him to death. Ae credit to the reputa- ton Of its author, although it is possibly a little more diffuse in conversation than is absolutely necessary. It is unquestion- ably a charming product of stage art and one which merited the marks of apprecta- tion, which were liberally forthcoming last night. The fact that the play made a good impression immediately reflects credit on the company which performed it, for while @ good company has saved many a bad play, a good play never yet saved a bad company. There is but one regrettable cir- eumstance in connection with the perform- ance, and that is that it witnesses the closing week of the summer comedy sea- son. Mr. Bond had a congenial character in Hugh Chalcot. Mr, Wheelock was ex- cellent as the Sergeant. Mr. Mackey look- ed and acted the role of the Lieutenant acceptably and Miss Haslam surpassed even her own good work in the part of Blanche. The remainder of the cast did the conscientious work that is expected of it. Mr. Thaddeus Shine did the Rus- stan to the life and proved a good acquisti- tion to the company. The occasion was one that called for enthusiasm and the audience was not backward about mani- festing it. —— EXCURSIONS. ‘The Church of St, Michael and All A: will give an excursion to Mershall Halt ne morrow. Smith was beaten unmercifully for a few minutes by Embry, who took his assailant’s two revolvers away from bim and carried them home.
