Seven white men, who were its oc- supanis, were leaning on one side of the ‘boat when a gust of wind, which came with the storm, keeled the boat over, throwing the men into the river. The tug Major Allen went to the rescue, and after some difficulty succeeded in getting every one cf the unfortunates aboard. They were taken to the city. It was reported last night at the sub- station that a house at Suitland had been burslarized.. The Anacosiia officers are looking for the burglar. During the prevalence of a severe thunder storm yesterday evening a fire occurred in the business office of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad station at this place, but which was extinguished before much dam- age was done. The fire originated from a telegraph wire which runs into the room, and which was overcharged by the electric fluid from the storm cloud. The fire was first discovered by a colored boy in passing the front window,and the office being closed at the time, he at once informed Mr. Frank Rabbitt, operator at the tower, a short dis- tance from the station, who at once ran to the scene of the fire, and by breaking open @ rear door gained access to the room, and in a short time the flames were quenched. In the meantime the alarm had spread to other parts of the place, and in a short time the town fire apparatus was on the ground, but its services were not needed. The extent of the damage consisted in the burning of the window frame and some pa- pers near the same. On Friday morring the large tobacco house of Mr. W. W. Soper, near Cedar Grove, this county, caught. on fire, and the building, together with about 1,200 pounds of tobacco, was entirely destroyed. Mr. Soper was preparing to pack and ship his crop of tobacco to market, and a fire had been made in the house that morning in order to get it in good condition. The loss will amount to several hundred dollars, up- on which there was no insurance. Mr. L. L. Nicholson and family, who have been spending some time at Chapel Point and other rescrts on the lower Potomac, re- turned to their home at this place on Sat- urday. Mr. and Mrs. Al. Street improvements are now in order in Laurel, and plans and specifications shave been prepared and will be received until the 13th of August for the first mile of paving, curbing and laying sidewalks under the act of the last’ legislature authorizing the ex- penditure of sbout $45,000 for this purpose. ‘There is nothing new in political circles in this lecality, except the convention held by the populists in Washington, which was attended by some cf our citizens. Up to the present time democrats and republicans are quietly waiting the calf for the primaries, after which we may expect Iively times. ‘The citizens cf Laurel have just returned from their seventh annual excursion to Bay Ridge. Each year it seems to grow in in- terest, but owing to the hard times only about’ 300 participated in the outing. The Laurel Military Band furnished the music. and many persons from Baltimore, Wash- gton and the surrounding country helped io swell the number of the pleasure seekers. There was an attempt et suicide in Laurel this weck. A young girl, about fifteea years of age, swallowed a teaspoonful of quick- silver, and after hard work the physicians save! her life. Some of our people are in demand for cperatives in cotton mills in the south. Mr. A. T. Luber and his son, Mareus, have been ergaged for a new mill in Columbia, S. C., at wages double what hey received her e. It ts said that more of our expert hands will be sent for to be employ in this new mili, which ‘s one of the largest and finest in the Uniiea States. The lodge of Good Templars recently cave an entertainment here which was largely attended and much enjoyed.
