A Great Performance of the Messiah to Be Given—St. Paul, Sampson an@ Delilah and Other Works. ‘The Choral Society has not yet made out its program for the coming season, although it is expected that something definite will be determined upon at the meeting of the board of directors tonight. There seems to be some difference of opinion between some membe>s of the board and the music com- mittee as to whether ft is advisable to open ‘the season with a miscellaneous concert or with some good oratorio. The music com- mittee has recommended that at the first ceneert of the society, which will probably be in the first week of November, the ora- torio of “St. Paul” shall be given. Their idea is that by starting out to rehearse an cratorio there will be a greater amount of interest felt by the members of the society than if it were known that the dirst con- cert would be composed of a lighter work to start with, and miscellaneous numbers for the second part of the program. “St. Peul” has not been heard here for many years, not since it was given by the old Philharmonic Society, back in the seventi>s somewhere. It has a number of grand choruses, which the society, with ite in- creased membership, covld interpret tn exe cellent style. Of course, it would be neces- sary that the attendance should be large at each rehearsal in ot won of deanna Ta peters S @ couple of months, but it is believed that the members would be sufficiently interest- €d to at once take hold with an earnestness aud an enthusiasm that would warrant prediction of a 4 There is no difference of opinion a: | ing the “Messiah” during the Christmas holidays, and it is possible that the solo quartet may be of a character which shall appeal to the lovers of all good music for its excellence.
