FROM CHICAGO 0 THE PACIFIC Inconvenience to Passenge Caused by the Strike. WHAT THE PROSPECT I8 The employes of the Chicago Great West- ern railway went out at Chicago last might, making a total of eleven Chicago roads now tied up or crippled by the American Ratl- way Union boycott of Pullman cars. The roads so far affected by the strike at Chi- cago are the Illinois Central, Santa Fe, Chicago Great Western, Chicago and North- ern Pacific, Western Indiana, Wisconsin Central, Chicago and Eastein Illinois, Wa- bash, Grand Trunk, Monon and the B. 4 OQ. On some of these roads Pullman cars Were still being carried last might, but the strike leaders confidently asserted that to- day would see the boycott et- fective. The men, who have been jeaving slowly and in small lots, are beginning to show the effects of the A. R. U. “mission- ary” work, and last night the boycott sen- timent was much more general and appar- ent than at any previous time since the strike began. An attempt was made last evening to send out the St. Paul train on the Chicago Great Westerp with a Pullman sleeper attached. The train started out, but when it was found that the sieeper had been coupled on @ trainman pulled the bell rope, and, as the engineer reversed the engine, twenty men rushed to the coupling, and im a few mo- ments the train pulled out, leaving the Pullman in the depot. Strikers gathered in the railroad yards in different portions of the city and the police were kept busy quell- ing their threatened riots. Strikers drove Illinois Central empties from the yards at Fordham, despite the efforts of @ detail of police, and an additional force was sent to that point. Later in the evening a large crowd gathered in the Western Indiana yards at Archer avenue and became so threateningly demonstrative that the police force feared trouble. The three signal men who control the switches at the Weetern Indiana tracks at Archer avenue joined the strike-s at $30 o'clock last night, blocking the system, Under a heavy police guard a new signal man was placed in the tower, and the block ade was raised, the crowds making no demonstrations. At 9:30 o'clock the San Francisco Limited over the Santa Fe, with four Pullman cars, passed over the cross- ing in safety, the crowd making no 4 stration. The seventy-five signal men fifteen switchmen employed in the Wentera Indiana yards are all on strike. A general tie-up on the Michigan Central road was narrowly avoided in the after- noon. The union was notified that the Michigon Central was engaged in switching coaches for the road, whose men are out, = perintendent of the Michigan Central once notified that if there was fur ther attempt on the part.of hie road to as- sist the Illinois Central ‘every man in the employ of the Michigan Central would be called out. Orders were given to the men to have nothing more to do with the Mlin- ois Central cars. The Michigan Central trains which were run out ove> the Ilinots Central tracks mede their schedule time without any difficulty. Every time one of them passed with its Wagner cars, the groups of crowds at crossings cheered. Not a wheel was moved in connection with the Illinois Central suburban after @ o'clock. Seven train crews, after having brought their trains into the Central sta- tion, refuse? to take them out again. At Grand Crossing, Burnside, Kensington ond Fordham the strikers began to gather in small groups during the early part of the evening until t ac he able that the railroad avy for additional protection .rom the police. When the dismond special, with several Pullman slespers, went through Grand Crossing on its way to St. Louis the crowd became demonstrative. When the train stopped at the crossing the crowd surged accoss the tracks, and the officers had some difficulty in restraining them, but finally suc>esded in clearing the way. One switch- man was arrested. In the afternoon 1.009 employes of the Tliinois Central Company i the Burnside shops joined the strikers. They walked out of the shops in a body and took a train for the city. Progress of the Strike. The foliowing dispatches, sent last night, indicate the progress of the boycott: OMAHA, Neb.—The boycott on the Pull man Company is not being felt here @l- rectly at present, but the indications are that it will be a fact in railroad circles in this vicinity shortly. The American Rall- way Union members are more numerous at points further west than at this city, and there, it is thought, the trouble will cccur. This applies to the division towns on the Union Pacific, Burlington, Rock Island and Missouri Pacific. Local mem- bers of the American Railway Union are not much interested in the developments, but some slight alarm is felt on account of the attitude of some of the members at Nebraska points where it is thought, the men will refuse to switch or handle trains | carrying Pullman cars. DENVER, Colo. Judge Hallet of the United States circuit court today issued an order restraining the Pullman strikers or other persons from interfering with the op- erations of the Santa Fe Railway Company, or with employes within the confines of Colorado. SAN FRANCISCO.—Tonight it is impos- sible for a person to leave the state California by rail. Not a train, ex those engaged in suburban traffic, Is move ing in the whole state. The Southern Pa- cific Company adhered to tts determination not to run trains withou: and the trainmen were equally as deter- mined not to handle the cars name Pullman. Consequently, dreds of people who expected north, south and east were forced to aban- don their trip. The trainmen went to their homes, and the big Oakland mole was de- serted, except for the aw boat employes and the suburban people. The men are ordered ot until the discharged employes reinstated. Tonight not a wheel is moving on the entire New Mexico division. Several arrests will be made if the United States marshals succeed in getting here Santa Fe. The fi bie E g erty of the company in New LA JUNTA, Colo.—The th passenger trains are being held at this point on ace count of the boycott of the Pullman cars, Some forty firemen have been di: for refusing to go out on these trains, and one engine from the south end. The com- pany is feeding about 100 passengers. HELENA, Mont.—The first effect of. the Pullman boycott was seen here today when the east-bound Northern Pacific Ay er- rived. Last night train was bound up at Livingston, and the su- perintendent on the Montana division or dered the east-bound train to be killed when it got to Helena. This was done, end the 200 passengers who were aboard are scattered about the city it There has been no excitement of any hind and every one takes the situation good naturedly. On the Montana division, ex- tending from Helena to Livingston, no: wheel is moving. This is due to the fact bo edhe shopmen at the latter point have en advantage of the Pullman boycott to t their demands for an ine: pease of other presen’ pay, and in sympathy with them employes have gone out om that division, There are a lot of tourists at Livingston and at National Park, who have been caught in the tie-up. No freight is moving east of Helena, in this state, but from Helena west trains of freight cars are operated. The Great Northern, which oper- ates its own sleeping cars, is ruaning right, and today for the first time in t months began running through trains te the sound. LAS VEGAS, N. M.—Rallroad men here are quiet, but their determination not to move a Pullman car is apparent. The presence of a United States marshal end a number of deputies loaded dowa with guns had no effect on them
