Amid a profusion of beautiful flowers and with the songs of birds coming in the open windows the annual commencement e&ercises of Notre Dame took place this morning. The big hall of the institute on North Capitol street between I and K Streets was filled with the young scholars and their relatives and friends, who en- Joyed to the full an unusually attractive program. In the exercises music played @ prominent part, and the‘thorcughly finished way in which the various sclections were rendered reflected great credit on the chil- dren and their instructors alike. There was a graduating class of six mem- ; bers, consisting of Miss Raedy, Miss O'Con- nor, Miss Savage, Miss Heck and Miss Doi y. Ag their names were cailed off for their lomas each one was pre- sented with e floral crown by » Father Keat- and Father O'Connor. On opposite platform were two grand pianos, and this was used as a stage for the young performers. The pupils, a couple of hundred in number, had seats on opposite sides of the hall, occupying three or four rows of chairs and leaving space for the audience ground the walis, In the cenier was a clear space, and sev- eral of the prettiest features of the cnter- tainment took place, notably «he greeting of the flowers to the papal ablegate. It was expected that Mer. Satolli would be present im person to preside over the exercises, but he has been absent from the city and was rot able to get back in time to attend. This was really too bad, for the most attractive part of the program was givin up to a scene thit would have delighted his heart as well as his eye for beauty could he have been here. On a dais om the platform was a large armchair, reserved for Mgr. Satolit. After the = overture and the salu- tatory, one of the older girls walked out on to the floor in front of this throne and de- livered an original poem of welcome. Then four pretty ttle girls came out, cre at a time, each carrying 4 mammoth basket of flowers, each aifferent from the others, ‘Then these dainty little six and eight-year- olde spoke the words of the flowers, ea: one telling in verse why her floral gift was ewes upriate for the monsignor. hen the baskets were taken up to the platform and presented to Mer.
