John K m Cuts the Thrents of Wife and ables. A tragedy im which four persons were murdered and one committed suicide was enacted yesterday at Cramer Hill, a small village on the outskirts of Carden, N. J. Some time after midnight John Kuffman arose from his bed, and with some sharp instrument, probably a razor, cut the throats of his wife and three children. Thea Washing the blood from his person he dressed himself neatly and committed sui- cide by hanging. The Kuffmans lived in a two-story frame house on the outskirts of the town. They moved from Trenton three weeks ago. The family consisted of the father | mother, a baby girl about one month and boy twins. Kuffman was out of work most of the time, oniy putting In a few days at the Kensington sugar refinery. He was very poor, and his failure to secure a per- manent position and consequent suffering for the actual necessities of life probably caused insanity. He was about fifty years of age, but his wife was not over twenty= two. The closed shutiers of the house in the morning first excited the suspicions of the neighbors that something was wrong, as the family was known to be in the house the preceding night, and as late as 12 o'clock a light was seen burning in the seo- ond-story front room. John Hartman, who | lives near by, acquainted Justice Schmits | cf his fears that all was not right, and the two men then proceeded to the house. They | forced a front window, and after striking @ Light stepped into the room. A ghastly sight | met their eves. Hanging from a nail driven in the frame of the doorway swung the body of Kuffman. As soon as they recov- ered from the shock the men cut the body down. They went out into the next room. Lying on her face was found the body of Mrs. | Kuffman, with her head nearly severed | from her body. Blood was on the walls an | the furniture, showing that the woman hi made a brave fight for life. With ashen faces the men next went upstairs to where the three children were slept. The first object that m was the body of the baby | to its body almost by a shred room on the bed were found the bodies of the twins, five years old. They also na@ their throats cut.
