12 EVENING STAR, Y, THEIR HOUSEWARMING Members of the Board of Trade Gather in Their New Rooms. Some Imprompta but Very Happy Speeches Made and a Pleasam’ Evening Spent. The Washington board of trade gave a gieasant informal housewarming in its mew home last eyening, and from 8 to 10 o'clock the rooms were comfortably filled with the members of the organization, who ‘were more than pleased with the quarters Which have been secured as an abiding wlacs, at least until such a time as the board can afford to erect a building of its own. The rooms were handsomely decorated last evening with palms and roses and pre- sented a very attractive appearance. The Suests were received by President Warner and Mr. John B. Wight in a most hospitable manner and at once made to feel perfectly at home. Among those present were Prest- dent B. H. Warner, Secretary John B. ‘Wight, W. P. Van Wickle, Joseph Gawler, Henry L. Biscoe, Austin P. Brown, A. P. Leidy, Arthur Cowsill, Charles H. Davidge, W. Riley Deeble, Frank J. Dieudonne, A.P. Fardon, Weston Flint, N. G. Ordway, Jos. Prather, Wm. H. Singleton, J. Leavitt Smith, Wm. E. Speir, Wm. S. Thompson, ‘Thos. Somerville, Matthew Trimble, Wm. H. Veerhotf, E. L. Whitford, Wm. H. Saunders, Frederi: W. Pilling, Wm. M. Poindexter, IW. S. Roose and M. Hebner. Handsomely Appointed Rooms. ‘The new rooms into which the board of trade has recently moved are in the Ames building, 1410-12 G street, and are admir- @bly located. They consist of two large fooms on the second floor of the building, connected by wide folding doors. hung with portieres. They are covered with Japanese matting and the walls are hung with sev- eral appropriate engravings and etchings. They are handsomely fitted up with oak ofMice furniture, desks, tables and chairs. In addition to supplying a home for the board of trade the rooms are expected to furnish @ pleasant place of meeting for the members where they can make business appoint- ments and also meet visiting members from boards of trade in other cities. It will be a convenient place, also, for the members to drop in and write letters or transact other business when away from their own offices. It was intended to make the housewarm- ing last evening quite an informal affair, but it was none the less pleasant on this account. It was a jolly gathering, and all took real pleasure in the opening of their larger and more convenient home. Two of the rooms on the third floor were used dur- ing the evening, and here was served a light collation, with lemonade and punch by the side. There were cigars in plenty, too, and when they were well lighted Presi- dent Wa>ner called upon a few of the mem- bers to tell what they thought of the new move. As chairman of the committee on rooms, to whom was due much of the credit for securing such desirable quarters, Mr. Thomas W. Somerville was first asked to speak. Some Informal Speechmaking. ‘Mr. Somerville modestly retired, or would have done so, if he could, but he was com- Pelled to speak, and said that, in his opin- ion, the rooms were very much better than the old ones, and he hoped that they would be able to do even better in their new home than they had ever done before. Then Mr. Warner devoted a few words cf praise to Mr. Wight, the energetic secre- tary of the board, who has iabored so hard for its interests. Nothing wouid do then but that the secretary should add his little say to the remarks that had already been Mr. Wight said that too much credit had been given to him, but that he was only too glad to have been associated with other well-wishers of the city to do what they could for the advancement of Wash- ington. All that was needed was for the board of trade to be known in order to win recruits to its membership. There is @ large work for the board to do, and he looked upon this move into new quarters @s only a step in advance, and he expected oon to see the board in a building of its own. In conclusion, he said that he hoped all the members would use the rooms free- ly, and said that If it were desired on special occasions arrangements could be made for keeping them open of evenings in order to still further increase their use- fulness. Brief extempore remarks were also made by Messrs. J. L. Smith and ex-Gov. Ord- way. The latter spoke pleasantly of his first experiences in Washington, when he came here early in the ‘ts, with Gen. Batchelder. It was with interest, he said, that he had watched the growth of the city and the increase of values, and was now more than ever satisfied that by 1900 Wash- Ington would be feeding at least a half mil- Mon people. He regarded values in this city as on a firmer foundation than in any other city in the land, and he considered that those who had real estate property here to leave to their children had a be- Quest that was worth the leaving. As to a Public Library. Mr. Flint also spoke of the important work that is ready at hand for the board to @o. One of the most desirable moves to agitate, he considered, was the establish- ment of a public library. In conversation with the assessor of the District he had Jearned that the property here is assessed at $200,000,000, and at this valuation a tax of from a tenth to a quarter of a mill would Suffice to establish a magnificent library. The fact that this is the capital would add immensely to the value of a national uni- versity of great library. This was shown in Berlin, where the university, although one of the youngest in Europe, is already One of the most flourishing, simply or main- ly because it was in a capital city. A bill for the establishment of a library, drafted by Mr. T. W. Noyes, 1s now before Con- gress. The speeches were concluded with a few brief remarks from Mr. Trimble, assessor for the District of Columbia. In the course of his remarks he said that while the tax- able property in the District amounted to but forty-seven per cent of the area, the property that is exempt amounts to fifty- three per cent. With such a state of affairs as this he considered it not a bit more than st that the national government should called upon to pay at least a share of the taxes here. ‘The remainder of the evening was spent im pleasant intercourse and in the enjoy- ment cf the refreshments that were served upstairs. Altogether it was a most enjoy- able occasion, and served to cement still closer the bonds of fellow feeling that hold together the members of the Wash- ington board of trade. Yesterday the executive committee of the Rational board of trade, consisting of Blessrs. Gano of Cincinnati, Snow of New York, Randall of Baltimore, Lane of Bos- ton, Dousm: of Chicago, Parsons of St. Louis, Raymond of Detroit, Hefford of Burfalo and Miller of New Orleans, availed themselves of the offer of the local board fooms for a business meeting. pcr The Texas Knights. A brief cablegram has been received at the State Department from United States Minister Sill at Seoul, Corea, confirming the accounts already received of the up- rising in that country. The minister says it had its origin in resentment at the ar- bitrary action of the governor of one of the provinces. He was killed by the rioters, as were about thirty members of his house- hold. The minister does not regard resi- dent Americans as in danger, and makes ir mention of the reported flight of the ing. The report lacks official confirmation here at the State Department or the Corcan or Japanese legations. The Coreans suggest that the rumor may have been based on a movement of the king to another portion of the territory from that occupied by him as @ place of residence. To flee the country altogether would mean the disruption of the government, a condition hardly thought probable. If, however, the report be true and the king is in Japan, he is safe from bodily. harm or surrender. Under no circum- stances, it is said, would Japan surrender political refugees. A notable instance of protection of Corean refugees occurred {it 1884, when Japan refused to surrender men who had fied to its domains after an unsuc- cessful conspiracy against the present king of Corea. The king is about forty-five years of age, has reigned for upward of thirty years and represents the element of the population holding advanced ideas regarding western civilization, oS AUCTION SALES.
