Shey, whose proper name is Vernon A., lived at Point of Rocks, this county, with a wife and one child. Charles Henley (or Handley) had moved in the vicinity of Taylortown from Montgomery county, Md., about six months ago. He is a single man and worked as a laborer. Shey’s mother, brother and a sis- ter made their home near Taylortown, and Henley became a frequent visitor to the | house, paying marked attention to Miss_ Shey. Vernon Shey and his brother ob- | jected to this and succeeded in making it sd uncomfortable for Henley that he left | the neighborhvod. He returned a few day ago, however, and renewed his attentions | to Miss Shey. On Sunday evening last Bud | Shey, his brother and a party of friends gathered at a point on the road where they expected Henley to pass along to church. When he came they fired on him, threw missiles at him and chased him all the way to the church. When services were over | he borrowed a revolver and started back over the road, At a lonely spot Sud Shey | and his crowd again assailed him. Shey sprang upon him with an oath and de- clared he would el and at that jurc- ture Henley wh out his revolver and sent a bullet straight through Shey’s heart. The wounded man followed him a few steps, fired three times at him and then fell dead. Shey's crowd pursued Henley to the door of his own home, but failed to hit him with any of their numerous shots. Monday morning he walked io Leesburg and gave himself up to the authorities. A coroner’s jury was summmoned and will conclude its inquest on Friday. Howard Cline, an estimable young man living near Rocky Springs, went out into the field to work on Monday morning and | stopping several times to drink ‘water from a spring suddenly fell over and died in a! few minutes. The physician who was sum- | moned said death was caused by érinking too much cold water while overheated. Mrs. Sarah A. Wiite was about to par- take of her breakfast at the home of Geo. W. Dean, near Harmony Grove, Monday, when she suddenly expired. She w wealthy and prominent member of the Presbyterian church of this city. Rickards of Montana Issees «4 Proclamation. Gov. Rickards of Montana has forbidden the sun dance of the Cree Indians at Great Falis. The proclamation says: festival convinces me that it is not only inhuman and brutalizing, but unnatural and indecent, and therefore ae Christian civilization, and that its purposes are a menace to peace welfare of communities, inasmuch an initiative ceremony that inducts into the ranks of recognized warriors.. cal authorities of counties are directed & take steps necessary to enfore inhibition.' The proclamation of the governor tana, forbidding the con’ ted dance of the Cree Indians at Great is viewed at the Interior Department as wise and unnecessary. There are strict dian service regulations prohibiting dance within the limits of the though they do not control the actions the Indians off the agency. The Indian bureau officials consider that the proclama- tion attaches too much importance to matter and the prohibitory order have been made by the local prohibited the dance is looked upon fortunate, and the additional publicity may increase the determination of the Crees to carry out their plans. Balmer, director of the African choir, gave The Star man a short and entertaining talk at Willart’s this afternoon. Mr. Balmer was a missionary to the dark continent for twelve years, an@ came to be on close terms with many of the Kaffir tribes which inhabit that seared land. He learned their language and was conversant with the customs, He sympathized with them, and vy Ay confidence in him. He hit upon the organizing a native Kaffir choir and concerts in the Ynited States and Ei for the benefit of a fund to establish industrial training school. With this in view he traveled among the various tribes and succeeded in finding tweive blacks with good voices susceptible to train- ing. These people represented seven tribes and spoke five languages. They could sing the peculiar, weird songs of their native heath, and have been taught by Director Balmer to do many other things in the line of song. The choir sang at Metropol- itan African M. E.
