Representative McGuire of California vouches for the statement that Attorney General Olney has filed, in behalf of the United States, a claim against the estate of the late Senator Stanford for the sum of $15,000,000. The claim will be presented to Mrs. Stanford, who is executrix of the es- tate. Mrs. Stanford is not in this city, but is believed to be either in San Fran- cisco or at Menlo Park. It cannot be said what action she will take in the matter, but it is believed that she will reject it. The claim is the proportionate share of debt of the Central Pacific railroad, which the Department of Justice estimates that that estate owes the United States, upon the theory that P pepe assets of indi- vidual members of the original Central Pa- cific syndicate are liable for the debt of that corporation, now due or which will be- come due the government. If Mrs. Stan- ford rejects the claim the Department of Justice will have to decide what further steps will be taken. : It is understood that the claim was filed under California statutes, so that the stat- ute of imitation may not prevail against it. The claim is filed now in order to pro- tect every possible interest that the United States may have in the Stanford estate — the affairs of the Central Pacific Mr. Larcombe’s Resignation.
