Hagerstown is experiencing a municipal muddle or deadlock which {s likely to re- sult in serious complications and inter- with the city's interests if persisted ‘n. M. L. Keedy was the latter part of April elected mayor on the -epublican ticket. The city council, over which he presides, is solidly demecratic, and this body has firm any of the mayor’s nominees for the city offices, the members claiming a right to a division of the “spoils,” while the mayor's adherents assert these were all of the “big loaves.” All of the present offi- ciais ean hold over with the exception of Tax Collector Middlekauff, whose time is about to expire, when if ‘his successor ts not appointed and qualified no one will the city’s finances. The time for making annual levy is at hand and uneasiness cver the situation is beginning to manifest self, which is heightened by an anncunce- ment upon the mayor that he will make no further nominations until called upon to do so by the council. The annual tax levy has been made by the county commissioners and the rate placed at 75 cents on the $100, which is 5 cents more than last year. The May floods caused great damage to the county roads and to raise funds to re- pair them and also to meet outstanding obligations of the public schools this in- crease was found necessary. The taxable basts is $19,769,048, an increase of $40,048 over last year. Miss Lulu M. Thomas, daughter of ex- Postmaster Thomas of Hancock, this county, has been appointed assistent teacher of the Indian school at All querque, New Mexico. She recently passed the civil service examination at Washing- ton. : Fire of an incendiary origin destroyed the large barn of Joseph Eckerd at New- ville, entailing a heavy loss. Nine head of cattle perished in the flames. Another industry, which will give em- ployment to quite a number of hands, has been established here and will be known as the American wheel works. The plant will be in operation in a short time. In fact, Hagerstown shows no apparent ef- fects of the st-ingert times. Building operations are brisk and employment plen- tifa) in all branches. Kee-Mar College, the well-known Luth- eran female institution of learning at this place, is advertised for sale for taxes al- sed to be due ior the years 1S88$ and . This grows out of a notice given by R Cc. L. Keedy, the president of Kee- Mar, to the county commissioners that he would not pay taxes on the college, alleg- ing that the property was exempt on the grounds that it is a duly incorporated re- ligious educational institution. This wiil bring the matter before the court, when a much mooted question will be settled, as other institutions will be effected by the decision. Mrs. Elizabeth Kennedy, widow of Wm. B. Kenn»ly, major of the third Maryland | infantry in the late civil war, is dead, at | the age of sixty-two years. She died at | Chambersburg, Pa., of a paralytic stroke, Mr. Cecil Cornelius has moved to Wash- ington, where he will make his’ home in future. —_—__—> Congressman Heltshoover Renomi- mated.
