“13 ONE OF THE FINEST SUBURBAN NEWS. GARRETT PARK. Official Report of the Board on the Cruiser Oolumbia. The annual meeting of the Garrett Park Improvement Company was held in the pavilion on the 30th ultimo. Considerable routine business was disposed of, and the following-named officers were re-elected to serve during the ensuing year: President, Geo. H. Brown; first vice president, Emory F. Best; second vice president, John W. Bates; secretary, S. Dana Lincoln; direc- tors, Geo. H. Rice, E. M. Dawson, R. B. Detrick, E. V. Murphy, Vivan Brent, C. G. Berryman; advisory committee, James L. Skidmore, Chas. Watson, W. H. Alden, S. S. Burdett, Thos. G. Riley, John R. Hamp- ton, O. C. Fox; finance committee, J. C. Stoddard, J. B. Cox, Michael McNulty. Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Solean gave a birthday party yesterday to their children, Cather- ine and Ada, at which a large number of friends of the little ones were present. Dur- ing the festivities, which consisted of games, music, dancing and refreshments, interes: ing fancy dances were rendered by Misses Marie Fisher and Helen White. The Every Other Thursday Euchre Club of Washington spent Decoration day pic- nicking near the pavilion. _ >-— FOREST GLEN. Speedy and True — Domestic Search Lights Raked Over—Many Miles With Only One Coaling. The official report of the naval board, Commodore Selfridge president, which con- Gucted the recent trial and inspection of the triple-screw cruiser Columbia, has been made public. Certain trifling defects al- ways to be looked for in a new ship were found, but all of them admit of easy and inexpensive correction. Taken altogether, the report shows that the Columbia is one Of the finest ships afloat. “In the full speed trial," the report says, “everything con- nected with the engines worked satisfactor- Dy, though doubtless a better result would have been attained but for delays from thick weather and the heating of the center engines from careless handling. Consider- ing the fact that the engines of the Colum- bia never had been turned by the present engine force before, the speed of 184 knots (under natural draft) can be regarded as fair, and the board have reason to believe that under similar circumstances, with the crew well drilled, 19 knots and even more can be obtained under natural draft. The speed of 10.11 knots per hour, with thirty- eight tons of coal per day on a displace- ment of over 8,2 tons, is certainly a most excellent showing. No doubt this can be improved upon, and ihe Columbia will prove herself to be one of the swiftest as well as one of the most economical war ships ailoat.”" | The report shows that with one coaling, | 1,800 tons, the ship can cover 11,501 knots, ut a speed of 10.11 knots per hour. No Weakness developed in the huil or the auxiliaries. The ports of two six pounders Were found to be too smull, and in the case ot two four-inch guns it will be necessary to make some easily arranged alterations. ‘Swo cartridge cases stuck in the four-inch guns, and the board recommend that here- after all suck ammunition be gauged be- fore being taken aboard. The position of the conning tower was very poor, owing to faulty design, and left a blank space of degrees. While the electrical plant was generally good, the search lights are con- demned as inefficient, and the board adds that all of the search lights of domestic manufacture furnished our new ships are practically useless, while representing a large expenditure of money.
