The Argument Before th: Assembly. ‘When the Presbyterian general assembly convened yesterday afternoon the house was as full as i: the morning. During the recess printed copies of Prof. Smith's ar- gvument had been circulated, and his further speech was punctuated by the rustling of turning leaves. Before the continuation of the argument of the morning the assembly decided to sit last night from 7:30 until 9:30, notwithstanding the objections that were offered. The object was to complete the speeches of both parties to the appeal yes- terday, but it failed. Prof. Smith continued his argument, con- tending that by its verdict of guilty the presbytery affirmed that the accused had committed the crime charged, but that the evidence adduced had failed to support the accusation. The speaker then wert on to speak of the occasion of the adéress on which the charges of heresy were based and the circumstances of the church at the time, it being then in the midst of the con- troversy over the revision of the confes- sion of faith, and in debate over a substi- tute for the verbal theory of inspiration, which was no longer tenable. The inspira- tion insisted upon by the prosecution laid the Bible open to dangers which threatened its complete rejection. To meet this danger the address was delivered at the call of duty. The appellant continued further, main- taining that the verdict of guilty implied that he denied inspiration in the sense im- plied or expressed by the Scriptures them- selves. But since the Scriptures and con- fession contain no definitions, he claimed that it is not a crime in Presbyterian law to decline to say what the confession does not say or to decline to say that God must make all He does perfect, according to our idea of perfection. It is not an offense to affirm the facts which a careful examina- tion discovers in the Scriptures themselves. The argument was concluded by the claim that it cannot be a crime to assert that God's work is more effectually done by His permitting some human error to show itself in His instruments. This fact has always been recognized in the office of the preacher, and why not elsewhere? The whole argument wes briefly summarized and an appeal made for careful considera- tion and the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit. Prof. Smith occupied exactly the three hours apportioned to him. An intermission of five minutes was taken before Dr. McKibben of Cincinnati, chair- man of the committee of prosecution, took the floor to present the case of the appellee. He defined inspiration as a divine influence, which operated to make the bearers of the revelation and their record infallible in all their parts and utterances. This doctrine was declared to be a matter of faith, to be accepted because it was contained in the Bible. The Bible was declared to contain one doctrine of inspiration—not many. Continuing, he said: “Having made God the responsible author of Scripture, to deny peach the General the truth of Scripture is to im; veracity of God himself. But a new school of theology has arisen, declaring that a man accredited to speak for God may not necessarily be entirely reliable. It has been claimed that the Westminster divines did not hold to the infallibility of the original autographs, but when they declared that the Scriptures were ‘immediately gn goo they meant this or nothing. Purity of text mus: refer to some standard of judgment, whan ® must be oe a, Textual criti- cism has sought that text, which should be called an imaginary book.” ste The argument of the afternoon was closed by quotations from professors connected with the new school branch of the church to show their accord with the prosecution. The galleries were visibly thinner when the assembly met for its evening cession. Immediately after the opening prayer Dr. McKibben resumed his argument. After traversing the charges he alluded to the accusation that had been made against members of the pretbytery for laying a trap for Prof. Smith, in asking him to read aper on inspiration. rof. Smith ones fees to disclaim that he had ever insinua’ anything of the sort. In cne of the guano of error it was charged that vote of a@ member had been received and counted during his ab- Bence. In the discussion a fire of questions lowed from all parts of the house in to get a proper understanding of the It turned out that the vote had been in a sealed envelope, and had been cast the clerk. The main portion of the rest of the argu- ment of the session of extracts from Prof. Smith’s book on inspiration, frcm his letters and from other records in the case. The reader was frequently inter- rupted with calls for “Go on,” “Read fur- ther.” The closing point touched upon, he said, affected the sentence pronounced. The question had been asked: “Why not warn him instead of suspending him?” The answer was that Prof. Smith has not stood simply for his own ministerial posi- tion, but for the right to teach his views in the Presbyterian Church. ‘When the assembly adjourned a little more than half an hour remained for the appellee, > 5 THEY WANT NINE HOURS The Horseshoers Will Strike if Necessary for Shorter Hours. the Internationad Union Closed Yesterday—Delegates Enjoy a Banquet Last Evening. The conyention of the International Union of Horseshoers of the United States and Canada concluded its business yesterday and celebrated last night with a banquet at Harvey’s.. The final business of the con- vention was, perhaps, both from the stand- point of the horseshoers and the public, the most important which has been transacted during the sessions at Typographcal Tem- ple. The business in question was « prepar- ation for a universal strike of the horse- shoers in behalf of a nine hour day, if that boon, for which these workingmen have | been contending for a number of years, cannot be wrung from their employers by Kind persuasion. It was voted by the con- vention that an annual tax of $1 be laid on every member of the order, thus producing an annual revenue of $60,000. The | convention intrusted the strike matter en- Urely to the executive board, which will Pave the authority to use the strike order at that time which it shall deem the most opportune, Believe in Hard Money, j During the final session of the convention several speeches were made in condemnation of the times, and some remarks of an uncom- plimentary kind were made at the expense |of recent iegislation. There is a strong protection sentiment among the delegates, more particularly with those from the and a strong pro-silver sentiment, which is Lot Confined to the delegates from the west. ‘The horseshoers are bimetallists almost to 6 man,and say that they no more favor a single gold standard than they would a single silver standard, and that one is not more logical than the other. They maintain that with the tucreasing demand for dollars, due | to increase of business and population, and the decreased production of dollars due to the diminution of mined gold and the in- creasing use of that metal in the arts, that contraction of the circulating medium is going on at both ends; thus forcing down values by increasing the purchasing force of a dollar. Some of them expressed sympathy for the flat money plan and Coxey, but, as @ rule, they are hard money men and be- Leve that the agent of exchange shouid have intrinsic value. “ Last night they had a great eat at Har- vey’s. It was a jolly good time, with « wealthy fund of appetite, refreshments and eloquence. Many of the men are first-class speechmakers, and could drive a point with a very few licks. Mr. W. M. E. Carroll of the Northeast Horse Nail Company acted as toastmaster and kept all the guests en- thused. Several lusty songs were sung, and everybody had a kind word for Wi and its people.
