OS a x13 THE EVENING STAR, MONDAY, MAY 21, 1894-TWELVE PAGES. MANY RIVERS RUN HIGH Floods Qaused by the Recent Hard Rains. “Damage Caused in New York Pennsylvania — Big Booms Give Way-—The Potomac Swollen. Reports from New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland iadicate that the rivers are unusually high, and that much damage has been caused by flood. A dispatch from Genesee, N. Y., sent last night, said: The heaviest rainstorm for years, lasting now forty-eight hours, has caused a great flood in the Genesee river, and an immense amount of damage has been done. Hun- dreds of acres planted to early beans and peas will be washed out. The flats for miles around this village resemble an im- mense inland lake. Travel from here to Pifford and Cuylerville and other points by ‘wagon road 1s cut off. The river continues to rise at the rate of eight to twelve inches an hour, and only lacks eighteen inches of the highest flood in ten years. No lives are endangered as yet. At Mount Morris the water in the river has reached a point higher than at any time since June, 1890. The depth of the water now going over the dam at that Place is nine feet, a rise of six feet in the past twenty-four hours, and still continues to rise. Between Mount Morris and Son- yea, where Buck run crosses the highway, the waters have forced away the south abutment. The bridge has been under re- pairs, and was not completed. Last night it gave way under the high pressure of ‘water from that small creek. Several families living on the low lands have been compelled to vacate their homes. Damage to crops at this place will be some- thing serious, as nearly every farmer has Planted. The officials of the Western New York and Pennsyvania railroad were up from Rochester last evening, on a special train, to ascertain the danger of their bridge that spans the river near the dam. One of the abutments to the race gates is settling badly, and fear is expressed that it will not resist the great pressure on it by the swelling. If this should give way, all the houses between the village and the river will be wrecked, and undoubtedly washed away, as this would turn the water directly on to them. An Olean, N. Y., dispatch says: From present indications Olean is going to have a duplicate of the great flood of five years 0. The water in Olean creck is as high already as it was then, and the river is within about four feet of high-water mark, and raising at the rate of seven inches an hour. People along lower Barry street be- gan to move out at noon, and all the lower Streets have since followed, and the houses are nearly all deserted in that portion of the city. The tracks of the Bolivar route are under water for five miles. The Allegany river also runs along there, and millions of feet of logs are heid in booms at the different mills. The electric street railway company has abandoned all its cars. The Erte has abandoned ali trains on the Western di- vision, as well as all trains on the West- ern New York and Pennsylvania. At Portvilie the streets are submerged, and people are being driven from their homes. Pantie at Williamsport. A Williamsport, Pa., dispatch, dated last might, says: With the horrors of the dis- astrous flood of 1889, which spread death and destruction throughout this valley, brought back to memory by the threatened danger of another sweep of water, the peo- ple of this city and all through the west branch valley are in a state of panic that has turned the usually quiet Sunday into one of remarkable excitement. Since Fri- day night a steady and almost continuous downpour of rain has been swelling all the streams, and late last night numerous cloudbursts along the Pine creek and other trigutaries of the west branch of the Sus- quehanna have made it impossible to con- fine the water within into the main river. A cloudburst at Keating, Renovo is reported higher than in the flood of 1889, when half the town was under Above there and extending to the headwaters at Clearfield, every town and hamlet has been reduced by water to the in 1889. Along water. conditions that prevailed the Philadelphia and Erie railroad, between this point and Emporium, traffic has been Practically suspended since last night. Ringing Fire and Church Bells. ‘The fire and church bells of the city were Fung at 10 o'clock this morning to notify the people of the impending danger, and since that hour the work of preparing for the worst has been in progress. In the hundreds of homes that were submerged five years ago, the people moved out and stored their goods in the houses of those Mving on the highlands. The business part of the city was a complete wreck five years | 2g0, and hundreds of merchants are moving | their stock to places of safety. The regular church services were all sus- pended today, and in all of the houses of worship those who attended confined their devotion to the offering up of prayers for the assistance of Providence in the present emergency. The rain at 11 p.m. {s coming down in heavy sheets, the wind is blowing furiously, and the river is rising at the rate of a foot an hour. It is now twenty-three feet above low water mark. The lower part of the city | is flooded, the water has overflowed the banks in the central part of the city, and| the streets im the upper end are under water. The Keading railroad tracks through the city are flooded, and no more trains can be run on that road until the water subsides. People in the lowlands are rapidly moving to places of safety. There is danger of a break of the big boom, which contains 175,000,000 feet of logs. The “boom” at Lockhaven has broken, and 15,000,000 feet of logs have been los’ ‘The Upper Linden boom also broke at 5:30 this afternoon. It contained 10,000,000 feet of logs, and they have gone down. A Steamboat Wrecked. A Wilkesbarre dispatch says: The wind and rainstorm did considerable damage throughout Luzerne county today. Fences were blown down, trees uprooted and out- buildings were wrecked. Several large coal breakers, which made good targets for the wind, were badly dam- aged. The steamer Mayflower, plying on the Susquehanna between Nanticoke and Plymouth, was dashed against its pier by the wind and totally wrecked. It sank in a few minutes. The crew had a narrow es- cape. At Ashley a tree fell on a passing electric car, wrecking it and fatally injuring Bryan Berry, the motorman. Two passengers were slightly injured. Refuge om the Hills, A Lewisburg, Pa, dispatch says: The Superintendent of the Lewisburg and Ty- one branch of the Pennsylvania railroad, running from here to Bellefonte, reports heavy washouts at Miltmont and west of there to Rising Spring. A number of bridges are gone, and the extensive and expensive tramway construction at Paddy mountain is all washed out. The water is two feet higher at Coburn than it was in 1889, and the people of the valley are flee- ing to the hills and mountains for safety. Bradford's Worst Flood. A Bradford, Pa., dispatch says: The worst flood in Bradfor through Tuna valley. tiguous to the cree ‘Twenty streets con. the banks of the| streams. It has, therefore, spread out over the country, and at every point is pouring twenty miles above Renovo, early this morning raised the river there twenty feet, and the river at $s history is rushing| are inundated. The the most extensive pleasure resort in this portion of the state, is under water. Hun- dreds of acres of farm land are submerged and crops destroyed. No lives have been reported as lost. Heavy rains fell in Maryland early yester- day and Saturday night. An Elkton, Md., dispatch says: The river at this point is rapidly rising and residents along the river front are preparing for a threatened flood. Reports from the storm tell of the great damage done. ‘The Chesapeake and Delaware canal at Chesapeake City threatened to burst and flood the town, although all the safety gates were thrown open, and tonight fears are entertained for the safety of that portion of the town lying in the lowlands in immediate vicinity of the canal. As the wires are down between here and that place, it is im- possible to learn the situation this evening, although parties coming from there say the citizens are preparing for the worst. The Potomac Subsiding. A Hagerstown dispatch says: The water in the Potomac at Williamsport today had risen about twelve or fifteen feet, but it is subsiding this evening. Exaggerated re- ports of the freshets attracted several hun- dred Hagerstown people to Williamsport during the day. No damage has been re- ported other than a landslide in the canal at the tunnel, and no damage is appre- hended. ——_—+e2+______ Epworth League Convention. ‘The committee appointed by the District Epworth League to arrange for the trans- portation of the delegates to the Pittsburg convention have practically completed ar- Yrangements for the comfort of the dele- gates. A special train of vestibuled cars will leave here at 8:20 a. m. on the 24th in- stant, arriving at Cumberland at 1 p. m., where a stop of twenty minutes will be made for dinner, which can be secured for &® cents if fifty or more will take it, and making Pittsburg at 6:15 p. m. Delegates are urged to secure their tickets at the B. and O. ticket office, 14th street and Penn- sylvania avenue, before the day of depar- ture, as arrangements have been made here for filling out the certificates required for securing the one-third fare on the return trip, and much inconvenience will be caused if these certificates. are obtained at the de- *$. just before departure. he delegates and friends who assemble to see them off will have a short prayer service at the Metropolitan M. E. Church, the nearest one to the depot, at 7:15 a. m. on the morning of departure. A beneficial time is anticipated. —__—_ The executive committee of the National Liberal Federation has issued a call for a conference to be held at Leeds on June 20 for the purpose of formulating a plan of campaign against the house of lords.
