Boston’s South En Fire May Yet Claim Many Victims. “A few of the missing Boston babes were found safe and sound yesterday, but the list of those who have not been heard of by thefr-relatives since the big tire on Tuesday is“Scil large, amounting to over thirty. ‘The’ firemen have carefully raked over the @ebris in the’ cellars of the homes once oc- cupied by the missing children, and have found no trace of human bones. It is pos- sible that in the ferce heat which destroyed every semblance of woodwork the tender bones of the little ones wouid likewise be reduced to ashes. But the absence of posi- tive proof of death leads those who are con- ducting te search for the missing ones to hope that they are still alive. The children housed at the Ruggles Street Baptist Church have for the most part re- covered their spirits. They have got over the effects of that night of terror, and with the philosophy of youth have accepted their ew quarters—probably to the full as com- fortable as their oid ones—and play about the vestry and courtyard, apparently per- fectly contented with their lot. It-ts the women who are the most pa- tthetie sight, for there are not many men here in the daytime. The women sit about, ‘seme with children in their arms and some without, but ail with the same dull despair fn their eyes, born of a hard struggle for €xistence and the sudden sweeping away of what littie they called home. The people are respomiing nobly to the all for assistance. The receipts of cloth- ing, food and money were much larger yes- terday. There are about 1,500 persons to care for, many of whom have scarcely a rag on their backs. This work has been led by the members @f the congregation of the Ruggles Strect Baptist Church, who took hold of the work ‘instantly after the fire. a THOUSANDS OF COXEYITES. Gen. The big coal conference at jesalted in a failure. veland has After a session of the miners the joint conference committees of | operators and miners reported last evening that they could come to no agreement on the question of wages. The operators of- fered a 65 and 66 cents scale and the miners held out for 70 arid 75 cents. President McBride offered a resolution reciting that whereas a large number of | Operators who had refused to attend the | conference had refused the hand of recon- ¢iliation and peace which had been extended to them, the miners belieted that any set- tlement arrived at in the absence of these operators would only add to and accentuate the miserable condition of the miners, and that it was impossible to make any settle- quent with the operators who had met them there. While appreciating the efforts of the oper &tors who had attended the conference to | reach a settlement, the miners asked their €0-operation in bringing peaceable and per-| suasive measures to bear upon the absent perators to induce them to agree to terms | With the miners. ‘These resolutions were offered to the con- ference as expressing the views of the miners, and as there seemed to be nothing me te do the conference adjourned sine He as-| men were | NEWS. |. THE HAWAIIAN SITUATION. It Appears to Ex-Gov. H. H. Wells, Who Has Just Returned. Ex-Gov. H. H. Wells of this city, who has been with a party of friends on a trip to Hawaii, Las returned to this country, land- ing at Victoria, British Columbia, on the 9th of May. He was interviewed by a rep- resentative of the Victoria Times on the situation in Hawaii, and is reported as fol- lows: “The election was as quiet as any ever held in any township in the world. Indeed, no community anywhere is more perfectly orderly and quiet than that of Honolulu. All they need is a regularly established gov- ernment. The present government 1s good enough, and administers the law faithfully, but it wants permanency. It ts remarkable that all the world demands is that Hawali should have a regularly established govern- ment, an ocean cable and a great naval station such as no weak government, a weak community or private capitalists could establish. No one requires these more than Victoria and all British America. You want to distribute its warmth and your coldness, southern products with the things you raise. “Nothing stands in the way of it except one womar with no following, no divine right, nor any choice by the people,. to reign or command any more fhan to be ruled and cbey. It was a mistake to at- tempt to put her back on the throne, be- cause it would have retarded elvilization, and no one man or woman is big enough for that. Mr. Cleveland’s mistake in sup- posing he could make a republic into a monarchy, or that he could haul down the American flag without the severe and al- most universal condemnation of the peo- ple, was a great one. Honolulu is literally the center of the world of waters, and Eng- land and the United States, more than any other countries, must finally be in accord on the question of the occupation of the isl- ands by the United States. Absurd Reports From This City. “I have no authority to speak for any one but myself, but I am entirely convinced the American minister, Mr. Willis, and Ad- miral Walker must from necessity be in ac- cord, and it can only be a short time before they will solve the problem, with the full approval of the edministration at Wash- ington and the American people. The election caused no contest except in the conflicting ambitions of individuals here and there. A constitutional convention was inevitable, members to it had to be chosen, those finally chosen would finally agree, and together frame a moderate and wise constitution. The real disturbing cause that keeps a few people calling themselves royalists in a condition of antagonism is the silly inventions of a few letter writers who regularly furnish the most absurd accounts from Washington as to what is beiag done, For instance, the last I heard was that a well-known individual, once a member, for a short ime, of Kalakaua’s cabinet, had as- sured some natives that the Ist of June had been agreed upon when something decisive would be done in their interests by Mr. Cleveiand, an event not nearly so probable as the breaking out of a volcano that will bain the islands and drink up the Pa- cific. The trade of Canada with the islands is growing constantly, and I regard the pres- ent line as a splendid thing for your prov- ince and country. The service is a good one, the steamships are excellent, and if the courtesy of the officers counts for anything, the line will be popular.” —————— AUCTION SALES. THIS AFTERNOON. €. G.
