12 A LEAP 4ND A RESCUB. How a Tramp Saved a Railroad Train ud What Came of It. From the Chicago Record. Coming east March 28 we met the fast mail at Chauncey, and as it passed the con- ductor threw off a copy of the Record. Pick- ing it up and closing the switch as we puil- ed off the siding, I went into the way car, Mt my pipe, and settled comfortably in the chair to enjoy its contents. Following my usual custom, I had glanced down the first golumn and was almost through the sec- nd when an item caught my attention. Gt related to a band of wandering men on train at Little Rock who were seeking ork. The warm fire and my fragrant corncob wlike favored reminiscence, and, following the thread of recollection suggested by the item, lived over again an experience which is indelibly burned into my memory, and | I wondered if the hero, the tramp to whose course so many owed their lives that June night, ever rides over the spot in his pri- Vate.car without thinking of it. Extra Wallace, west bound, reached Emer- son at 10 p.m. June 16, 1878. In switching out a car the forward brakeman was so badly injured that we left him for surgical treatment. I was braking behind. From Emerson to Chauncey, twelve miles, 1s up @rade, and as Conductor Wallace had gone over to the engine I was left alone on the Tear. The moon shone brightly and I no- ‘iced a number of tramps riding out on top. ‘We had almost reached the summit and the tight express was only fifteen minutes be- hhind us when suddenly the speed slackened. The caboose, two cars of telegraph poles and three of cinders had broken off. I was Standing on the load of poles and had start- ed for a brake, when one of the poles b ame loosened from its position and rolled on my foot. I struggled desperately to free myself, for the cars had started backward. I thought of the express with her cargo of precious lives and struggled again. I seemed to hear the crash; the shrieks and groans of the dying; the curses ard prayers. Minutes were years, and I grew old in the awful suspense. Then I heard a whistle and saw our front end following down the hill. On the leading car the conductor was swinging a back-up signal, while the whis- ue blew. a wild wafning for No. 7. Faster and faster spun the wheels, and slowly but surely was the runaway overtaken. I held my breath. Only twenty feet. A form shot out oveg the chasm, swung fm clear relief for an instant against the sky and then dropped safely on board the car of cinders. At the same moment the conductor gave a.stop signal and the gap widened. Weil timed it was, for given a second gooner and the leap would have been im- Possible; later, and a collision unavoidable. In a short time every brake was set, an’ as we slowed down I shrieked, frantically “Flag 3 Take a red light and flag the express. He understood and obeyed without a word. Fortunately or providentially, they were late and he got back far enough to stop them. I was unconscious when at last re- leased. My foot was badly crushed, and it was many weeks before | was again able | to report for duty. As for our hero, he Proved to be one of the tramps I had no- Uced and had volunteered for his danger- ous task. When the superintendent, who ‘Was on No. 7, learned the circumstances he offered him a position as brakeman, promis- ing him advancement as he proved his abil- ity. That was the beginning. Today he is @ prominent general manager, and his name 4s a recognized power in the railroad world. — His Cow Comes High. Grom the Chicago Record. , There is a man in Chicago who pays $18,- 000 a year for the privilege of keeping a cow. He is a sane man, a business man, a man of family, and generally respected in the community. His poor relatives declare him @ freak, and his neighbors shrug their shoulders and murmur things about rich men’s whims. The way of it is that te possesses a Valvable building lot in a choice residence Portion of the city, and having nothing else to do with it, he put a nice little fence ground 't and quartered therein his pet lersey cow. The cow was an artistic cow, and harmonized well with the green turf and lilac bushes, so people rather admired the arrangement. One day a man came along who thought he would like to build @ house on that particular lot, so he hunted up the owner and made him a spot cash offer of $300,000 for the land. His offer was refused, decisively and politely. But,” remonstrated a relative, aghast, “that would pay you $18, a year! Why on earth did you refuse it? The rich man lit a cigar and turned a | cnn gh on his accuser. “Yes,” he assen in @ puzzled way, “but what would I have done with my cow?” ——— 8 A Good Friday Custom. From Black and White. Among the many quaint rites and old- fashioned ceremonies once proper to Pas- sion week, most have now vanished away, but some yet remain. A Good Friday cus- tom, said by authorities to be the oldest extant, is yet left to us, and the pictur- esque function was duly celebrated last week in the ancient parish of St. Bartholo- mew the Great. Upon a tombstone in the churchyard were set out twenty new six- penny pieces, and by the side of each a bag of hot cross buns and an Easter card. Then, unto the buns and silver, there marched in procession twenty venerabie, godly, widowed women of the parish, each to become richer by a share of ihe matters spread upon the tombstone. It is to be noted in connection with this old usage that no bequest originally instituted it. In- deed, its origin is now buried in the mists of a far past. Nevertheless, to a bec it owes its present vitality, for not Jong ago Mr. J. W. Butterworth, F. s. A. the celebrated antiquary and student of folk-lore, invested a sum sufficient to per- Petuate the Good Friday dole at St. Bar- tholomew the Great for all time.and twenty deserving widows of that parish are, there- fore, certain to enjoy sixpences and buns at least once a year as long as the world wags.
