12 SUBURBAN NEWS. ANACOSTIA, Mrs. S. A. North, who has been on a visit to her son, Rev. J. B. North, of Garden Memorial Church, has returned to her home in Baltimore. Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Jett of King Géorge county, Va., have been visiting Mrs. Jett'’s mother, Mrs. Green, on Jefferson street €x- tended. Mr. Jett has returned home, but Mrs. Jett will remain here for an indefinite period, owing to the illness of her brother, Mr. J. A. Green. The Woman's Relief Corps met at the residence of Mr. Wm. H. Peck on Maple avenue last night to prepare the music for the exercises to be held in conjunction with John A. Logan Post, G. A. R., at St. Eliza- beth’s cemetery, under the direction of Mr. Davis, on Decoration day. A permit has been granted Mr. W. H. Rese to build a one-story frame addition to No. 5 Harrison street, to cost $100. Mr. Jas. W. Bartley has sold to Richard L. Hyde lot No. 19 of tract called Chichester, for $275. The Ladies’ Aid Society of the Anacostia Baptist Church will give a lawn social within the church inclosure tonight. The grounds will be gaily decorated with Chi- Rese lanterns. sa KENSINGTON. ‘The Dorcas Society of the Warner Memo- Tial Presbyterian Church will hold a lawn party on the evening of May 18 on the lawn at Mr. B. H. Warner’s residence. The regular meeting of the Library Asso- elation will be held on Friday evening, May 18, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Eldridge. Mr. John M. The new registration of, voters by the clerk closed on Saturday night. Out of a voting population in the corporation of about one hundred and forty one hundred and six registered. Quite a number of prominent citizens failed to reg- ister, which is to be regretted, as the coun- ceil to be elected will have the levying of taxes and control of the affairs of the town for a longer time than heretofore, as under the provisions of the new charter nine coun- ciimen are to be elected instead of six, three of whom will serve for three years, three for two and three for one year. A town meeting has been called by the clerk for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., at the town hall, for the purpose of nominating the nine councilmen. Usually two tickets, regard- less of politics, are before the voters, and doubtless this year will not be an excep- tion. The council elects a sergeant and clerk each year, and also a member of the school board, and provides funds for the maintenance of the public schools of the corporation. Mr. J. H. K. Burgwin of Richmond is at the Eagle House. Mr. W. N. Lynch qualified on Friday night as a member of the town council, to which he was elected to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. W. B. Patterson. Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Quick of Burks, with their little daughter Hazel, Mr. Van Quick of Farmwell and Mrs. C. W. Bubb of Wash- ington, spent Sunday with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Quick. Rev. J. T. Williams preached again Mon- day night for the Christian Endeavor meet- ing. A good congregation was present. The services wiil continue this week. The Village Improvement Society’s enter- tainment and “broom drill” will take place at Odd Fellows’ Hall Friday night. Mr. M. M. Monroe of Unison, Loudoun county, is visiting Mr. A. R. Jacobs and family. — SANDY SPRING. There was quite an enthusiastic meet- ing of citizens interested in the projected telephone system at Ashton on Friday evening. Robert H. Miller presided and Henry H. Miller was secretary. It seems almost certain that enough shares of stock will be taken to raise more than $400,which, it is believed, will construct a line extend- ing from Brookeville to Spencerville and from Brighton to Oakdale. The dancing class was entertained by the Misses Thomas of Tanglewood on the Mth instant. Thirty-three Sherwood boys and girls spent a halcyon day in Washington on the 12th, through the kindness of Mr. Harry Spotford. He, like a beneficent “Pied Pi- per,” led these eager children from one scene of interest to another for four hours, capping the climax by not only lunching them all, but, by an arrangement made previously, he presented the whole merry party to President Cleveland, who received them first and the grown people afterward. Ten members of the Montgomery Club, on invitation of Director Robert H. Miller, visited the Maryland Agricultural Experi- ment station on Saturday and inspected the various departments. They expressed themselves much pleased with the intelli- gent and practical management of the sta- tion and agreed as to the value of such institutions to farmers. The Enterprise Club convened at “Mount Aify,” the home of Benjamin H. Miller, on Saturday, with Charles E. Bond, chair- man, and Tariton B. Stabler, secretary. Owing to the absence of several from the neighborhood the gathering was smaller than usual, and Richard Leizear was the only guest. The june meeting will take place at “Plainfield,” with Wm. W. Moore. Mrs. Emilie T. Massey has taken a fur- nished house at Catonsville, Md., with the expectation of spending the summer there. Wm. W. Moore and wife are attending the yearly meeting of Friends in Philadelphia. Mrs. J. T. Moore is in Baltimore, and Miss Ellen and Ethel Farquhar at York, Pa. Edward S. Leadbeater and wife of Alex- andria are spending a week with her rela- tives here. Miss Jeanie Hilleary of Roa- noke is the guest of Miss Anna M. Farqu- har. Other recent visitors are Mrs. Ann P. Tillum, William Lea, Mrs. T. Burling Buil and son, Thomas L. Moore and wife, William F. Thomas and wife, Russell Sta- Bier, Miss Fuller, Misses Clark, Kate Brad- Jey and Mabel Gray of Washington and Edward Pleasants of North Carolia, a former resident of this place. May 15, 1S, was the sixtieth anntver- @ary of the wedding day of the venerable Robert Rowland and Hadassah Joanna Moore of “Plainfield” farm. Of the many friends and relatives who signed their mar- Flage certificate in the old meeting house im Baltimore this bride and groom of 1834 @nd two others are the sole survivors. Al- though not in robust health, these much- Fespected Friends still continue to mani- : t a interest in, and affection for, lounger generations, and, surrounded b: @evoted children, grandchildren and nu merous great grandchildren, although they ave outlived almost all the comrades of Siete Youth, the evening of their days is of a peace and happiness not alw: Vouchsafed to the aged. Sir ta —— BLAND FOR PRESIDENT. Gov. Stone launched the presidential Qeom for “Silver Dick” Bland in the Mis- gouri state convention at Kansas City yes- terday afternoon. Hie deprecated the rumor making him a candidate for sesiatorial hon- os, but regarding the report which con- mected Congressman land with the presi- dential nomination for 1896 he wished to ‘ay that the people could not nominate a Wore conscientious, faithful and devoted servant Congressman Tarsney made a sensational @ttack on Senator Hill, incidentally eulo- gizing President Cleveland as the “apostle @f tariff reform “There was a Valley Forge before York- he said, “a Bull Run before Appo- Mattox,” and then, with a measured em- Dhasis, “there was a Benedict Arnold be- fore——. Gentlemen of the convention, Bardon me if courtesy forbids me to carry the parallel further.” Here the convention roared and shouted loudly and repeatedly, “Hill.” Resolutions were reported and adopted in- ne nen en ene | scuthern lin THE EVENING STAR, WEDNESDAY, MAY 16, 1894—TWELVE PAGES, SUCCESSFUL ARMOR TEST. Hundred-Pound Plates for M: Bethlehem Iron Company harveyized arm- or plate stood a test on the proving grounds of the company at Redington, Pa., yester- day. The test took place in the presence of Commodore Sampson, chief of the United States ordnance bureau; Prof. P. R. Alger and Lieut. Ackerman, representing the gov- ernment, and the chief officials of the com- pany. The plate tested was one of those being made for the turrets of the monitors Puri- tan and Monadnock and the second-class battleship Maine. It was 16 feet long, 5 1-2 high and 8 inches thick, and slightly curved. Two Hollister projectiles, each weighing one hundred pounds, were fired at the plate from a six-inch gun. Thirty-six pounds of powder were used in the first charge, and forty-three in the second. The big projec- tile attained a velocity of 1,762 feet per second in the first shot, and was hurled against the plate at a speed of 1,968 feet in the second. The result of both shots was about the same. The shells entered the plate about three inches, then broke off and shattered into small pieces. Neither shot caused the slightest radiating crack in the plate. The test was satisfactory in every respect, and the group ‘of plates, weighing nearly four hundred tons, was accepted by the govern- ment. After the acceptance of the plate an ex- perimental test was made to see just how much battering the harveyized plate could stand. A Hollister projectile weighing 250 pounds was placed in an eight-inch gun. Ninety-one pounds of powder were placed im the charge, and the big conical shell hurled against the plate at a velocity of 1,835 feet per second at a point between where the other two shells had penetrated. Few of those present expected the plate to escape a shattering, but though the projec- tile struck the mark squarely and split the Plate from top to bottom, there were no radiating cracks in ‘any direction, and the backing was not penetrated or disturbed in the least. Aw Diplomat Dead. Herr Kurd von Schloezer is dead. He en- tered the Prussian ministry of foreign af- fairs in 1850. He was promoted, until in 1869 he was charge d'affaires at the City of Mexico. In Is71 he was appointed German minister to the United States. He was accredited to the Vatican in 1882 with a mission to ne- gotiate with the pope an entente in regard to the Kulturkampf.
