12 MANY CHURCH @QUESTIONS. Matters to Come Before the Presby- terian General Assembly. ‘The one hundred and sixth general as- sembly of the Presbyterian Church North ‘will open at Saratoga, N. Y., today. ‘The old lines of revisionists and anti-revis- lonists, which so evenly divided the last Saratoga assembly, have long been wiped out by the Briggs case, the division now be- ing on the issues of that famous trial. The result is that the conservatives or anti- Briggs men will control this assembly five to one. The first test of strength will be im the election of a moderator Thursday afternoon. The liberals will probably ad- vance Arthur J. Brown, D. D., of Portland, Ore., as their candidate. On the other side Many names have been suggested, among them Henry C. Minton, D. D., of San Fran- ¢isco; Samuel A. Mutchmore, D. D., of Philadelphia; Col. John J. McCook of New York city, and James Gardner, D. D., of Gloversville, N. Y. The chief business to come before the as- sembly will concern the theological semi- naries of the church. The withdrawal of the Union Seminary of New York city from the supervision of the general assem- bly on account of the action of that body im the Briggs case arouses western Pres- byterians to demand a change in the char- ters of all the seminaries and benevolent boards of “he church, so as to prevent further alienation of property and invest- ments held by these institutions. The assembly will be asked to entertain the appeal of Prof. Henry Preserved Smith of Cincinnati, charged with heresy on ac- count of his support of Dr. Briggs. The case comes from the Ohio synod, which affirmed the verdict of the Cincinnati pres- bytery, finding Prof. Smith guilty as charg- ed. The Briggs case itself may be heard again. This may be raised on an inquiry as to how Dr. Briggs has conducted him- self while under sentence of suspension from the Christian ministry. This assembly will probably bring to an end the overtures that have been conducted for years between its representatives and a committee from the house of bishops look- ing to a union of the Episcopalian and Presbyterian bodies. Steps may be taken to a closer fedcra- tion of the ten Presbyterian denominations of America. The assembly may be called upon to take action concerning a new method of Sunday school teaching, known as the Blakeslee system, which ‘is said to carry into the| Sunday school the net results of Briggsism. ——_—+e-+_______ HAMLINE INFANTS ENTERTAIN. Little Sunday School Children Edify and Amuse a Host of Friends. ‘The infant clas3 of Hamline M. E. Sunday school yesterday evening entertained with muesical and literary exercises of a juvenile | variety an audience of several hundred ad- miring parents, relatives and friends. The exercises took place in the audience room of Hamline Church, and were unanimously declared to be successful in every respect. Mr. Thomas H. Martin presided; Mrs. Clara L. Roach, who has charge of the infant class, attended conscientiously to the work that was hers; Miss Carrie Hawk looked after the literary features; Miss Daisy O’Neall was musical directress, while Miss Fannie Bischoff played the piano for the accempaniments. How Men and Women Rua Great Risks During the Summer in the Way They Are Clothed. Few people think at this time of the year of the great importance of dress. In the winter people dress warmly because they know it is a necessity, but im the summer, when it Is hot, they go to the other extreme and even dress too lightly. Hot weather causes people 10 use light clothing; but suddenly the wind changes, the air becomes chilly, and a cold is pretty eres tain to be the result. Now, where most people make a mistake is in not guarding against these sudden changes quickly light sult of clothing, and feels a change which brings @ chill, should at once counteract the chill. ‘This cam only be done by the use of some pure stimulant, not gingers or hot drinks, but a pure medicinal whisky that will refresh the system, cause the blood to circulate, and bring about tm- mediate reaction. ‘There is but one medicinal Whisky that will do this, and that ts Duffy's Pure Malt. It has for twenty years accomplished what has never been known before in counteracting the first symptoms of sudden colds and preventing the possibility of pneumonia, fevers and all the dis- tressing complaints which follow any cold. It should be remembered, however, that Duffy's Pure Malt is the only whisky which will cer- tainly accomplish this, and, however much deal- ers may talk to the contrary, it alone ghould be my15 ; AUCTION SALES.
