TRAIN pture of Sanders’ Band at Scott City, Kan. The stolen Missouri Pacific train blocked near Chivington, Colo., Wednesday evening, pulled into Scott City, Kan., and last night Sanders and his 400 commonwealers were taken into custody. Their surrender was the conclusion of strategy on the part of the railway officials. It had been thought that Sanders would capture a work train sent from Scott City to clear away the wreck at the cut, but the railway men were mistaken. Sanders said that his men would assist in the work. So, in spite of the cold rain, they toiled all night, and by daylight the engine and one of the box cars had been placed on the Fails. ‘The fugitives reached Horace, Kan., at noon, and there coaled up their locomotive and filled the tank with weter. Just as they started to pull out again the east-bound passenger train from Pueblo pulled in. Cosgrove, the commonweal engineer, quick to appreciate the situation, slipped back up- on a siding and notified Conductor George Derby of the passenger train to go ahead. Cosgrove pulled gut upon the main track ten minutes later and went flying down the read in pursuit of the passenger. At Sel- kirk the commonwealers’ special was twelve minutes behind the passenger, and at Leott i: was only six minutes behind. The com- monwealers were happy in the belief that they had won a victory by following closely be&ind the passenger train, and so could not be checked in their progress. Meanwhile the special with the- United States deputies was flying over the straight track to meet the motley crowd. Six rails had been taken up just west of Scott City, at a point selected for engaging the com- monwealers, but when it was learned that the passenger train was in advance of the runaways the program was slightly modi- fied. The rails were relaid, and at 4:15 p.m. the basSenger pulled into the yards at Scott ty. Here a west-bound passenger was stand- ing, and no sooner had the east-bound train arrived than this train slipped out upon the main line, thus blockading further progress of the fugitives. Cosgrove quickly reversed his engine, and then proceeded forward to Scott City. By this time the special with the deputies aboard had reached Scott City. Sanders was given half an hour to decide whether he would be peaceably or forcibly arrested. He returned to his men, and at the end of the time allowed he came back and reported that the men had agreed to surrender, They were taken east at mid- night. They say they expect acquittal on the charge of delaying the mails, and that then they will reorganize and continue the'r march to Washington. a Shockey’s,Long Tramp. Samuel W. Sho@key of Ada, Hardin coun- ty, Ohio, arrived in Philadelphia yesterday. Shockey calls himself the “Pauline Pedes- trian Pilgrim,” and his mission is to travel around the world in five years. He left Pittsburg on April 1 with Coxey’s army and traveled as far as Cumberland, Md., with the. commonwealers. Then he moved on ahead of the army and reached Washington on April 5. The same day he was picked up by the police and was consigned to a cell. The police said Shockey was insane. He was afterward released. soe Smallpox on Board. On board the steamer Roland, which ar- rived at New York yesterday from Bremen, there are two cases cf smallpox among the steerage passengers.
