The little village of Norway, Maine, was visited yesterday by a most disastrous fire. Every store, the dwellings and the other buildings on Main street were crumbled to ashes, and the total loss will amount to half a million dollars. The fire broke out about 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon in Cum- ming’s furniture factory, across the river from the village, and before it could be subdued had jumped the stream, set fire to the opera house and communicated to neighboring buildings. Norway's only methed of fighting flames was with a hand engine, and this had no efect on the fire whatever. It was soon seen that the whole town was threatened, and aid was summoned from Lewistown and Portland. it an hour before engines from the cities could reach the scene of the confla- gration, and by that time all buildings on Main street had been burned to the ground. Merchants on the street made frantic ef- forts to save their stocks, and in some cases were successful, but the flames spreed so rapidly that it was impossible to save much. Seventy-two dwelling houses, including homes of all the prominent merchants and professional men, were burned, and hun- dreds of people were forced to flee from their houses, leaving everything to the mer- cy of the fire. At midnight mothers were hunting for children and children for mothers, while a relief committee, which had been organized by citizens, was aiding the authorities in providing quarters for the homeless and caring for the injured. Several cases of at- tempted robbery have been reported. —+-e+___ Views of a Recognized Authority. From Printers’ Ink. In importance in Washington The Star comes first and is probably not only the most conspicuous and prosperous daily in Washington, but is without doubt the best appreciated and best patronized evening newspaper in the United States. In point of circulation it is not reached by any other evening paper that is sold for more than one cent anywhere in America. The circulation of The Star is confined almost exclusively to Washington. It is claimed for it, and probably truthfully claimed, that no other newspaper in the country goes into so large a percentage of all the houses within a radius of twenty miles from the office of publication. The Star has enjoyed unprecedented prosperity for twenty-five years, and is one of the very few papers that hax failed to ad its advertising rates in propor- tion to its owth im circulation, influence end popul with the community in which it 1s issued. jering its character, influence and circulation, its advertising rates are ex- ceedingiy low, being matched in this re- spect by no more than two or three news- papers issued in other sections. The class of advertising it carries is of the best. The value of this paper to an advertiser, all things considered, and taken in con- nection with the comparative cost of ad- vertising in it, places it not lower down than third in a list of all the best daily papers published in the United States, and in making out sucha list a well-informed advertiser will have great difficulty in de- ciding upon even so small a number as two to place in advance of The Star.
