Ridout ig visi er sister, am ‘Maryland. = Miss Ali Mrs. Barrows, New England’s Industrials Taken to the Station House. Sweetland’s industrial army from New England reached 186th street, New York, last evening, where a mounted policeman came riding up. “Who are these marching men?” the po- Neemen asked the leader. “They are noble recruits for Coxey’s army at the national capital,” replied the leader. “Have you a permit to march through the city?” asked the policeman. “No, I have not,” replied the captain. “I did not know it was necessary. I sent Capt. Connors as my advance agent to make all the required arrangements for my reception on my arrival.” “I can’t help your arrangements with your advance agent,” said the policeman. “As you have no p:rmit to march into the city you will have to accompany me to the station house, so roll up your flag and come along.” Capt. Sweetiand without a word of pro- test, rolled up his flag and, after turning his command over to Lieut. Whalen, fol- lowed the policeman. Lieut. Whalen or- dered the men to break ranks. From this point they came on as stragglers. At the Harlem bridge they were met by Capt. Connors, who told them they were to rendezvous at the headquarters of the people's party, at No. 50 East 10th street. When they arrived with the news that Capt. Sweetland had been arrested, a how! of indignation was uttered. “It will soon be treason,” exclaimed one, “to carry the United States flag.” “They arrested Coxey in Washington, and why not arrest Sweetland here?” said an- other. “It is a part of the program t stamp out popular freedom and manhood. In a talk with Capt. Connors the fact came out that he had applied during the day to Superintendent Byrnes for a per- mit to Capt. Sweetland to march through the city with his men. The captain said the permit was refused on the ground that notice should have been given six hours in_advance. Sweetland was taken to the Tremont po- lice station and locked up. He was much exercised over his arrest. He said: “I con- sider this arrest of mine a gross violation of the privileges of liberty and life. In these times of peace I shali suffer in silence and make no effort to vindicate myself in the eyes of the law except through my friends. It has come to a pretty pass when free-born American citizens cannot march either singly or en masse to the nation’s capital and demand their birthrights.” Sweetland was bailed out about midnight, G. D. Rousseau, who has an electrical works, being security. As thus far planned, the men will re- sume their interrupted Ine of march to Washington on Thursday. ‘Train Stealing in Colorado. Gen. J. S. Sanders and his army of com- monwealers departed from Pueblo, Col., for Washington last night in a highly sen- sational manner. At 6:30 they seized a switch engine standing on the Denver and Rio Grande track, moved it up to the Mis- souri Pacific switch, and backed down on ten empty coal cars standing on a Mis- souri Pacific sidetrack and started east. A warrant was sworn out for the leaders last night, and a posse of fifty men started for Olney, where the legion was delayed by an action of the Missour! Pacific in dumping an engine and freight car off the track, to place them under arrest. Gen. Randall Arrested. ‘The two factions of the Randal! army of industrials met with treatment at La Porte, Ind., yesterday morning that they did not relish. The city authorities met them at the city limits and forbade them to enter the city, and Gen. Randall, his son and two of his lieutenants were arrested and placec in jail. Papers for their release are now being made out. The citizens took pify on the starving army and sent out provisions to it where it is camped, a mile south of the city, pending the release of the leaders. The charge against them is refusa: to obey the smallpox quarantine regulations. Gen. Randall telegraphed to Dr. Greer of Chi- cago for aid in getting him and his lieuten- ants out of ja‘l. It is believed that the army will break up and go no farther. Commodore Kelley’s Fleet. It is the intention of Gen. Kelley to start the flotilia of flatboats bearing his army, now swelled to 1,400 men, down the Des Moines river some time today. For a time the general threatened to remain at Des Moines until he was reimbursed for ali the money invested in the flatboats. Most of it was given him yesterday, and he is now willing to respect the wishes of the people of the city and depart. Ample provisions have been furnishei the army for one day, and reports from points along the river indicate that the mea will be well cared for. ‘Will Tread in Coxey’s Footsteps. Col. Thomas Galvin’s army yesterday morning. on invitation of James Evans, presiden: of the Second National Bank cf McKeesport, Pa., moved out to his farm, adjoining the city. The army now has pro- visions on han¢ sufficien: to supply it for a week. Col. Galvin said that he had not been able to negotiate for transporta- ton, and that the army would set out today for Washington on foot, following about the same route as that traveled by Coxey and Browne. There were 270 men present at roll call yesterday. Col. Galvin denies that he had any intention to take possession of a Baltimore and Ohio train. He said: “Once was enough for me.” ‘Texans in Trouble. ‘The first regiment of the Texas industrial army is in trouble, its leading general, J. R. Patterson, being behind the bers at Houston on a warrant charging him with swindling at Alvara. o+—___— INVESTIGATING ARMOR FRAUDS. Arrival of the Committee Appointed by Secretary Herbert. ‘The committee appointed by Secretary Herbert to investigite the armor frauds ar- rived in Pittsburg yesterday morning and is now prosecuting its labots in the in- spector’s private office at the armor plate department of the Carnegie Steel Company, limited, at Munhall station. After break- fast the committee at 8:30 o'clock had a conference with H. C. Frick, chairman of the Carnegie Company, and Assistant Chairman Hunsicker. ‘The investigating committee is composed of Capt. W. T. Samson, U. 8. Lieut. A. A. Ackerman, U. 8. N., and Prof. P. R. Alger, department of ordnance, U. 8S. N. Capt. Sampson is chairman, and, in com. mon with the others, refuses flatly to make any statement to the newspapers concern- ing the charges of Attorney Wallace, or to give any information on the subject. He did state, however, that the Carnegie Com- pany had declined to be represented by counsel, and would simply present the tes- timeny of its officers and employes to re- fute the mysterious charges. The naval officers, Assistant Chairman Hunsicker, Government Inspector Wilner, two experts of the company and half a dozen newspaper men went to Homestead at 10:30 o'clock, Arriving at the gate, all except the representatives of the press were admitted to the works, Mr, Hunsicker ob- structing the entrance of the newspaper men. From a conversatoin with the naval officers it was learned that there is no like lineod of any official information being givea out until Secretary Herbert returns from California, some time in June. They say that they have been ordered to keep the entire proceedings secret. ‘The naval officers state that the Carnegie People are whoily on the defensive, and the burden of proof rests entirely with Attorney Wallace and his clients. ‘Phere has been considerable adverse com- ment on the fact that the investigations are being held in the inspector's office and on the property of the company, but the navy peop! y it would be impossible to he them elsewhere. ‘The committee continued the examination of witnesses at Homestead until 4:30 o'clock. Thre: witnesses—Superintendent Corry of thé armor piate department of the Carnegie teel Works and (wo olker gentiemen em- ployed in that department—were the only persons examined, the radicals and socialists for his vigor in fuppressing the Sicilian troubles, and when e areived ai Milan Sunday was greet with hoo:s and jeers. pm —__——— AUCTION SALES Premier Crispi of Italy is unpopular with | AUCTION SALES.
