FIELD Pushing Work on the Lawn Tennis Courts, PROMISE OF AN ACTIVE SEASON What is Going On in the Amateur Clubs. OUTLOOK FOR THE SUMMER The lawn tennis courts on the new athletic field of the Columbia Club will be finished the latter part of this week. The courts are now ready, exeept the marking off, which can be quickly done. A high, strong wire fence has been put up at the south boundary of the courts, and the board fence ‘surrounding the park will answer the same rurpose at the north side of the courts, After they have been played on for a time the finishing touches in the way of smoothing can be put on. ‘The courts are more or less shaded by the iall trees around them. There are seven of them at the park, besides the one adjoin- ing the club house, which has been in con- stant use for some time. Nothing has yet been done toward level- ing the ball grounds or laying out the bi- cycle track, The stumps, however, have all been removed and the holes ‘illed up. With the completion of the tennis courts the tennis season will open at the Columbia Club. Mr. R. Smead, who is in charge of tennis matters, said the other day that there were a great many members who took an active interest in the game, and he thought that the season woula be a live one. He has not appointed any tennis com- mittee or made any detinite arrangements regarding the summer prog-am. Nothing has been determmed in reference to a tournament or any matches, but as soon as play can commence all these matters will be discussed and settled. The foliowing set of rules governing the use of the athletic park has been pub- lished by the board of governors: ‘The grounds will be open daily from 8:30 a.m. mmc BY Dt ce Nene but mieibers, guests having ten-day: aud Visitors ‘accolupanied by meters shai be oat Liited to the grouuds, except on special occasions, No resideut of the ‘Drs Of Columbia cau be Intedaced more tan twive in the sate mouth, Xo resident of the District of C © tntrodueed ca Sunday.) ss OF Cumbia can be Members, wheu requested to do so, must show their wemberstup cards. Bowterous ‘conduct will not be allowed. ‘The grouudkeeper will not be permitted to leave the grounds on errands for members. Lockers may be obtained upou application to the Gtuce, for Which w change of $1 per year will be nade. Boys who are registered at the office of the club Will be admitted ou Saturday of each week from Yam. tol p.m. No more than three consecutive sets of lawn ten- nis shall be played by the saine party if other members bave requested the use of 4 court, The entertainment committee of the club are now engaged in preparing a program of attractive social events for the summer months. The ¥. M. C. A. Even during the warm weather of the past week the attendance at the gymna- sium of the Young Men's Christian Asso- ciation has been considerable, and the class work may continue for some time. The swimming club, which Instructor Sims is going to look after when the Weather becomes warm enough, has recely- ed many recruits. The club will, when the time comes, take frequent trips to various cooling waters in the neighborhood. Mr. Sims is an excelient swimmer himself and can not enly instruct those who do not know how in the mysteries of swimming, but can give many valuable pointers to thore who are already considerably at heme in the water. The following have so far expressed their wish to join the club; H. Kraak, O. M. Hansford, Gowen, Kemp, Pratt, Loving, Herbert, Bartlett, Pfeiger, Pearson, Bonnett, Maller and Green, The association has been looking about for some lawn tennis courts, but most avail- able spots have been taken long before now, and it ts Goubtful whether any ground can be secured for the pu so late as this. A number of the members have secured private tennis courts, and it is likely that those most interested in tennis will not be without facilities for the sport this summer, The bicycle club has become popular and has a large membership. Many runs are talked of for the summer. The ¥. M.C. C, The Young Men's Catholic Club members are to organize a base ball team in a few days. The nine will be an independent venture, paying its own experses, although bearing the club name. The club decided, some time ago, that it did not care to take the risk of a ball team, or pay its bills this year. Many of the members wish to play, however, and will manage a team them- selves. The nine will be organized next week and the players picked out. Mr. T. M. Ring, the chairman of the athletic commit- tee, ts in charge of the enterprise. The club would like to play other teams of the District. A class in gymnasium work is soon to be started at the club, and a physical instruc- tor engaged. Although warm weather is at hand enough of the members are anxious to take up systematic indoor exercise to make the move a good one. Another hop will be given by the club on May 15 at the National Rifles’ Armory, Athletic Notes. The base ball team of Georgetown Unt- versity has been considerably strengthened by the recent changes made. During this month, before the trip of the team to the northward, they will play the teams from Crarlottesville, Va.; Richmond College, La- fayette University, Cornell University and number of other strong ball nines.
