1 SUBURBAN NEWS. ALEXANDRIA. The boxing matches at Dan Henry’s little theater last night drew a crowd of about 800 people from this city and Washington. There were several very interesting bouts, though none particularly close or exciting. ‘The audience was extremely quiet, and the ‘whoie entertainment under the supervision of the police. Mr. Brown of Washington acted as timekeeper and Mr. Billy O’Brien @s timekeeper for all but the last bout. The first bout was betwsen Howard Wil- gon of Washington and Tom Cupid of this city, and was to have been a six-round go, but, unfortunately for Cupid, he was knock- ed out in the first round, in less than thirty seconds. The second bout was between Ed. Roach and George Northridge, both of ‘Washington, and was decided a draw. The third bout was very tame and comical, be- tween Fred. Morris, “The Black Cyclone,” and Calvin Smith of South Washington. After four rounds it was decided in favor of Morris. The fifth bout was between Savi and George Parker of this city, and after some very clever work on both sides for five Younds was decided a draw: The final bout, between James McCarthy of Buffalo and Billy O’Brien of Newark, the 122-pound ‘champion of the middle states, was given to O’Brien after the fourth round. O’Brien ‘Was about fifteen pounds heavier than Mc- Carthy. The case of T. A. Green & Keegan’s dancing reception at McBurney’s Hall last night drew quite a large crowd. About three hundred people left here this morning on a special train for Leesburg to attend the corner-stone ceremonies. ‘They will return about 7:30 this evening. ‘The funeral of the late Mrs. Ann Padgett took place at 2 o'clock today from her resi- dence on King street. The drill of the Alexandria Light Infantry last night was well attended and about fifty men answered to roll call. First Sergt. Wallace continues quite sick at her home on Upper King street. B. 7S Price is extremely ill and not expected to live. Jadge James Keith of the circuit court, im special session today at the office of Col: Francis L. Smith, decided that the injunc- tion secured by Ike Jones and others against B. B. Smith, restraining him from interfering with the work of building the mew track at Jackson City, should hold, and Suggested that Mr. Smith’s only relief was at law. Mr. Jones says he will soon have @ fine track located at that point. The city council meets tonight. There were six cases up for trial in the mayor's court this morning, and the fines aggregated $45. There were six prisoners cnt — lodgers at the station house last ‘The warehouse in the rear of Mr. James F. Muir's furniture store on King street Was discovered to be on fire about 10 o'clock this morning. It is supposed to have caught from a defective flue. The building was insured for $300, and there Was $300 on the contents. The loss is esti- mated at about $400. In the absencé of the chief engineer of the fire department, Fire Warden Louis Brill acted. While at work with the department Mr. Ned Seay was struck on the head by a falling brick and quite badly cut. He was taken to Lennon’s drug store, where his wound was dressed. Ladson, F. A. Holden, Dr. J. R. Owens, T. M. Moran, J. F. Hickey, Geo. N. Walker and H. 0. Em- mons. A suitable constitution was adopzed by sections and as a whole. A preamble and resolution, offered by Mr. Beech, was adopted, resolving to co-operate with the town commissioners in endeavoring to im- Prove and beautify the town, and appealing to every citizen who had the interest of the town at heart to assist the association in| its undertaking. It was also resolved that & copy of the same be printed and sent to each citizen of the village, and a commit- tee, consisting of Messrs Beech, White and Walker, was appointed to attend to the matter. The association decided to hold its Rext meeting at Wells’ Hall on the evening of the 7th proximo. Rev. Walte> Wall, assisted by Rev. Mr. Chisum of Washington, immersed eight colored candidates in the branch at Charl- ton Heights last Sunday. A young man from Gaithersburg, Md., whose name could not be ascertained, was arrested at the station in this village yester- day evening by a Washington detective, on the charge of fraudulently obtaining a bi- cycle. The young man went to the bicycle store of Miller & Bro. and offered a check for $100 on the Gaithersburg bank in pay- ment for the wheel, and was informed that it could not be taken unless it was indorsed by a reliable person. He then left the store and shortly afterward returned with the check bearing the indorsement of a Wash- ington merchant. Having thus obtained the wheel he rode out on it to Hyattsville by way of the Bladensburg pike. Mr. Miller then learned that the merchant had not in- dorsed the check, and procuring a detective came out on the 3:35 train from Washing- ton, and caught the young man Just as he was bearding the train with the wheel. ‘The swindler also had another bicycle on the train. which he intended to take to Laurel. It is said that he had obtained six bicycles in this manner. The funeral of the late Daniel Barron will take place from the Methodist Church to- morrow at 3:30 p.m. fe ee TAKOMA PARK. The proceeds of the stereopticon lecture on “Ancient Rome” netted a neat little sum for the benefit of St. Anthony's par- ish. Rev. Father Hughes, having made a visit to the “eternal city” a few years ago, was well prepared to entertain the au- dience that greeted him in the Brookland hall with graphic descriptions as well as fine views of the city that once “sat upon her seven hills and ruled the world. Miss Julia Fitzhugh has been called to her home in King George county, Va., by the sudden death of her mother, Mrs. Sarah A. Dade. : The Eckington Dramatic Club gave an excellent exhibition iu .Eureka Grange Hall at Chillum, and wds greeted by a good house. The main feature of the even- ipg was the amusing farce, “A Box of Monkeys.” Mrs. E. P. Simons of Argyle street suf- fered a painful injury a few days ago by falling and spraining her ankle very badly, but at present is getting much better. Rev. Mr. Clark preached to the M. E. congregation in the town hall on Sunday evening. A CHARMING WOMAN. She Has Studied American and Euro- pean Ladies Very Carefully, and Tells Just What Thinks About ‘Them. Ey have observed women very carefully.” it was a member of a leading ladies’ club who spoke. Continuing, she said: “I have seen Enzlish women and women from the continent under all circumstances, and I think I understand them. I have observed Ameri- can Women under every condition and I am able to compare the two I am sorry to say that American women are not as strong and healthy as the women of other countries. They are weak, delicate and run down, especially at this time of the year. And that is not the worst of it. American women need not be so. It is nonsense to suppose that a woman can go through this Season without assistance. She needs a tonic, a stimulant, something that will make her com- plexion good, her eyes bright and her health per- fect. I Know what will do this because I was once impa greatly run down state myself and I found that @ careful and continuous use of Duffy's Pure Malt Whisky did wonders for me. I am a firm advocate of temperance, but I believe near- ly every woman could be made healthier, bappier and more attractive if she followed the same course that 1 hare. These are good common sense ideas which every lady can adopt to advantage. It should be re- membered, however, tiat Duffy’s Pure Malt is the only whisky which’ can produce these results, as ordinary whiskies do not contain the qualities necessary for the purpose. Insist, therefore, upon your druggist or erocer giving you just what you Fequire ‘and under no ‘circumstances take any other. AUCTION SALES. THIS AFTERNOON. THOMAS DOWLING & CO., AUCTIONEERS.
