A large blaze of light between § and 9 o'clock, Thursday evening, which cast a re- flection directly upon the main building of the Soldiers’ Home, caused some alarm in this vicinity for the safety of the buildings within the inclosure, but the fire proved to be the burning of a large cow stable be- longing to Lawyer Robinson, whose resi- @ence is between the boundary of the home ands and the Harewood road. The Sol- * Home fire company, which was late- ly organ: Was soon at the scene, but could give little aid, as the hose was not Jong enough to reach that distance from the Water tower, and the building and its con- tents were so combustible that it burned fiercely. The loss was slight, as the stable ‘was old and the were all got out im safety. ‘The most notable event of the week was the reception given by the Brookland Auxil- of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union to the officers of the union of the District of Columbia and a number of their lends. The guests were welcomed in the es’ parior of the Baptist Church by Mrs. R. West, president of the Brookland Jnion, and invited to the auditorium of the ehurch, where a pleasant address of wel- come was made by Mrs. West and an ap- propriate hymn sung, after which prayer as offered by Mrs. Griffith, president of the District Union, and by Mrs. La Fetra, the former president of the union, and a very animated and instructive Bible read- ing was conducted by Mrs. Smith, superin- tendent of the department of legislation and Petition. Mrs. Griffith then made an elo- quent address, saying that she had been engaged during the morning with the Com- missioners urging upon them prohibitory measures for the District, and could report & fair share of encouragement from those honorable Featlemen in the efforts of the W. C. T. U. to do aw2y with the liquor traffic at the national capital. Mrs. Griffith spoke earnestly of the impending perils gon the approach of Coxey’s army to ‘ashington, not from the army itself, but from the lawless mob who were sure to collect in times of excitement, and becom- inflamed by intoxicating beverages, do kinds of deeds of violence; such was the history of most strikes and election riots.
