The mayor's Bailiff, B. F. Robey (re-elected); treasurer, G. W. Waters, jr. (re-elected); supervisor, John Padgett (re-elected); assessors, W. H. Fairall, John Travers and J. A. Brown; clerk to the council, Geo. W. Bond. A res- olution was passed providing for carrying into effect the new act authorizing the im- rovement of the streets and the issuance of to pay for the same. ‘oun committee on streets was authorized estimates, ascertain the cost of a= intended improvements and submit the same to the council, who will then await the consent of a majority of the property owners on each street before proceeding ‘with the work. A resolution was also pass- ed the street supervisor under the control of the council and prohibiting him from purchasing material, improving or re- pairing streets, or = men, without authority from the council. Much unfavorable comment was indulged fm from the fact that the council sat with closed doors-and refused to admit even a Teporter. Longstreet of Kentucky deliv- ered a sermon at Free Quill Hall last night upon the single tax, basing his remarks upon “The Law of Moses and the Law of Justice.” Among his auditors were some of the Hyattsville sirgle taxers, including Mr. J. H, Ralston. If satisfactory arrangements can be made, there will be a sermon each wight during the week. —<—— ROCKVILLE. At a recent meting of the board of man- agement of the Agricultural Society the following business was transacted: Mr. Wm. Dorsey stated that the applica- tion of colored people for the use of the fair grounds for the purpose of holding an agricultural exhibition had been withdrawn, on account of the hard times. The report of the committee on retrenchment was sub- mitted and adopted. Among their recom- mendations were the following: .That all work in future be done by contract as far as possible, and all supplies furnished in the same manner; that all employes have free admission to the fair and be paid the following sums per day: Ticket sellers, $2.50 and 32; gatemen, $2; assistant sec- Tetaries, $2.50; race ‘clerk, $2.50; entry clerks, $1.50; superintendents, $2; day Watchmen, $1.50; night watchmen, $2; car- Penters, $1.50; laborers, $1. Permission was granted to the Rockville Athletic Base Ball Club to remove some trees in the cirele, in order to save the fences by changing the base ball grounds. Mr. C. W. Fields was @ppointed a committee of one to oversee the training of horses, so that the track shall mot be used in bad weather. It was represented to the board that much anxiety prevails among all classes and that something should be done to quigt the ap- prehensions of the people. A proposition was made that the sheriff be authorized to employ a force of deputies to meet the Cox- ey crowd upon their arrival at the line and escort them through the county, and also to keep a strict guard over any camping ground they may make in the county.
